2 Hours tonight to clean up Windows; scan everything, etc.. Approx 8 nasties found, even though I have barley used it for 3 months. -- I have been using Linux Ubuntu, TOTALLY UNPROTECTED. --NO NASTIES YET! --LOVE IT!
Well technically it's the XNU microkernel (Mach) with the BSD kernel grafted on as a service, Darwin is the base system consisting of only the Open source components (no aqua, finder, quartz)
Id just like to interject for a moment. What youre refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as Ive recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Slackware rules if you want to really customize your system, else Linux Mint is a really good distribution for "normal people", but not if you want to be in charge of your computer as much. it also supports Ubuntu's repositories and is based on Ubuntu. I don't like Ubuntu's lack of security though...
the second it gets decent game support or more stable emulators, I'm making it my main os. for now though I've got one hd with ubuntu on it, and one with windows.
Saying linux sucks because you cant play Windows games natively is like saying your sports car sucks because you cant haul lumber in it. There's different things for different uses. Windows = gaming, Linux = free software, lower system requirements, less crashing. Maybe in the future one of the OSes will be able to do all of these.
Indeed... Besides its the fact that most games are designed for the Windows OS... If the designers of the games created Linux versions or instead skiped windows and made it Linux only then such a problem wouldnt of happened... same thing applys to Windows only software...
i think linux already does.. I play every game that come to my mind on it.. but most of the click click windows users are not enough inteligent to adapt to a different (even its better) system..
Some of them will, but most of them has an alias for linux (I mean in linux every kind of software exists that can do the same as in windows).
As far as I remember, Linux could always manage hardware resources much better than windows. Also notice, linux can natively read-write windows partitions, windows cannot linux partitions.
However, sadly, most if not all DirectX games for windows cannot run under linux. That's the only matter in it.
That's not actually right, the linux kernel can read and write FAT (used in older versions of windows and pretty much every modern memory stick) file systems, however when it comes to NTFS (the one used on most windows machines) it is left with the ability to read files and a VERY limited support for editing files. Of course, once you switch to linux, you won't miss the ability to use NTFS...
I already changed. I lost some games, but then come back with WIne. I have a great PC, but Windows makes it much slow... With Ubuntu, i can use the real peformace of my pc, i can play games, i recomend you to try firts on a VirtualMachine (NOt on M$ Virtual PC - Linux crashes...), burn on a CD/DVD/ test again (To be sure the CD/DVD works) and then, goodbye, windows :-D
I love Windows, but I have learned the hard way Vista is to unstable for everyday use. So i'm just going to get Ubuntu with a Windows XP skin, WINE, DOSEMU, and NDISwrapper. Then it will be just like running Windows, without the hogging of system resources and crashing.
lol me and a friend were mucking around making random posters about stuff, and i made one about linux. my friend said to me "if linux is so great, why don't you stick those posters up around the school?" so i did. the next day in music my teacher saw the posters and said "oh, was it you that put up that poster outside? i went and asked the ict dept if we could get linux up here in the music room."
unfortunately, the ict dept said no, but it just goes to show what a good advertisement can do!
I must say, I installed the latest version of ubuntu along side my xp partition, just for the sake of online transactions (I've had to reformat numerous times due to trojans). It turns out I use my ubuntu partition 95% of the time as opposed to windows. I really only need xp for gaming and itunes now (I know there alternatives for both, but apparently my version of itouch hasn't been cracked yet, and I'll take advantage of my xp for gaming since I have it.)
LOL, I installed Linux on an old laptop for a friend and he insisted on having a virus scan program so I installed ClamAV. You know what? It did actually find some viruses... on his old NTFS partition - apparently Norton missed them. God, I love Linux.
Love the commercial, Bahahahahahahahaaaa. Ask any coder no matter the programming language who has the better OS Microsoft or Linux. Hmm Linux wins hands down. Ok, some of you are looking at this message and don't believe me. Google to find out who gets paid the most programmers that use Linux or programmers that uses Microsoft. Aha Linux wins again. If you don't want to spend so much time waiting and freezing or rebooting give Linux a try. You are smart enough to use it.
bentleycoup: Sadly, there are still many programmers who have no informed opinion of Linux, and continue to live in somewhat-blissful ignorance. More of these are being churned out by lousy schools every year, which keeps the costs of hiring these guys low. Microsoft spends heavily to get schools to keep its business alive.
Despite that fact that Linux can't get viruses (rootkits are different) it does have programs that scan for Windows viruses and rootkits meant to target a UNIX (or UNIX-like) system.
Linux is so so safe, that theres no need of any security suite due to his desing and rules.
Also most "Virus makers" dont make Virus or trojans to it, because Linux doesnt got all that quantity of users as Windows, so damage is very very low, and these guys want to fuck most computers as possible.
No, and no. And with good reason. While it's amusing to some, it doesn't even come close to the quality a 'real' commercial would have to uphold. It was basically put online prematurely. :)
Oh well, at least people talk about linux here. That's the main thing.
I love Linux, I have multiple distros on Virtual Box and have it on another drive but I am still not fully done using Window$. Until I can use Cubase without doing anything too complex, I will use Window$ with fault... if only... I know there are alternatives but I do not know if I am ready to give up Cubase. I used to run windows and Linux but thanks to a virus my windows crashed and completely destroyed my computer. When I got my new computer, I decided to run only Linux and luckily, Dell gives you the option of getting ubuntu instead of windows and I'm more then happy with it.
where you using vmware when windows crashed? after a computer fails through a virus you can just refurbish it by reinstalling linux or making the other partition usable to linux
every thing you have trouble with windows, linux does it nicely with better funtions lool. and wont catch any virus :P ... but its advanced give it a try ;)
I use Linux and Windows pretty equally but I have to say this is wrong. Windows does nicely what linux has trouble doing; mainly hardware, and to expand that further network cards; especially printers, wireless cards and heaven forbid you ever have to install a 56k modem in linux.
Anyone who actually gets a virus should maybe consider taking some "computers for dummies" courses. In my 10+ years of using windows I've never even seen a virus
If you want to try it out I'd suggest googling kubuntu
Hardware manufacturerers are the ones that supply most drivers for Windows. Out of the box (without any additional searching) Linux supports most hardware immediately. I can plug it in and it works in seconds.
How about old hardware on Vista? My friend had to dump his printer & webcam when he got a PC with Vista pre-installed. Hardware that I now happily use... on Linux.
Although you're the 'chosen one' without any virusses, the rest of the world disagrees.
Had a few close calls once, but they did essentially nothing to me or the stability of my system...
anywho im now happily snuggled in with the ubuntu distro. So yay linux. Also I've found that a stock ubuntu distro is more compatable with most computers (and laptops) then a stock vista or XP OS.
i've got windows (my dad's giving linux next time i c im) i plugged in my webcam with vista and it says hardware is pc camera and its working bbut it wont do ANYTHING.
There's lots of good about linux. Price (free), minimum system requirements (can run on mobile devices), stability, security (almost no viruses), really high customizability, always getting better, free programs, great community of people who can help you.
Basically if you're not a total gamer or do not need some programs (and there are no alternatives) that are specific to some platform, go with linux. You have nothing to lose.
I'm a gamer, and I use Linux. Every id Software game can be run naitively in Linux, and there are only a handful that can't be run in Wine (Halo and other Microsoft games).
You know, Linux in not user friendly and not a great gaming platform... and do you know why? Because it was _not_ made for noobs, who don't care about anything important in Linux.
It was made for geeks. And geeks really don't need a super user friendly GUI. Linux is a really great stuff (for those, who can use it of course)
i mean , mac's are the best but windows arent bad at all , infact their one of the best there! sure vista was a bit dissapointing but its not fucking crashing and crap 24/7!the only reason vista(bite that ANY version of windows is crashing is because that people download too much crap on there.
Linux is a kernel. The OS is named GNU, but nobody calls it that way which is not a good thing. Linus Torvalds is against free software and GNU OS is free software OS.
Linus Torvalds is NOT against free software. He and Richard Stallman from the FSF have some issues. The differences:
Torvalds: Software should be fully functional, and as free as possible. It should be able to compete in its current surroundings.
Stallman: Software should be fully free, and as functional as possible. We should strive to change the current surroundings, so the software can compete.
In my opinion, both ideas are very admirable and one should not exclude the other.
Hm. That IS being against it. Functionality over freedom is basically the opposite of freedom over functionality. And in many interviews Torvalds mocked FSF.
Look at these comments - when people speak about the advantages of GNU, they speak about technical stuff. Nobody speaks about freedom. If the OS is called GNU or GNU/Linux, people would at least get interested to go to gnu . org
Really, it is not being against free software. Not many people speak of freedom, because they want their pc to work. Yes, we should strive for total freedom.
But putting yourself in a corner is not helping. Meeting people halfway (let's say: using prop. drivers to let your WiFi work) is essential. Offer them functionality WHILE they're changing.
Let's not create islands here. Both Torvalds AND Stallman want the same end result: free software for everyone. They just disagree on how to get there.
The only reason why WINE comes in handy, is for using software that was written for Windows. The OS Windows, we do not need. For me, there is more great software in Linux without a Windows substitute, than the other way around.
Consistent Linux users are not people who actually prefer WIndows but don't, because of anti-microsoft sympathies. I use Linux because I find it more intuitive, safer, and a whole lot faster. And because most of my favourite software runs on it natively.
lol if linux was just as popular as windows it would have just as many security threats. Of all professions, programming should understand the importance of evidence when making these kinds of claims.
How's this for evidence: on a hacker convention, for three days, all hackers tried their best to hack a Mac, Windows PC and Linux PC. The Mac got hacked within two minutes, the Windows (Vista) PC took another day. After three days had past, the PC with Linux was still unhacked.
Actually, Linux owns 70% of the server marked. And they are not exactaly exposed to alot of viruses and flaws are they?
If Linux was as popular as Windows there would be a bigger interest for viruses to be created, however the server marked kind of proves its wrong.
Its simple: Linux is heck alot more secure than Windows, and its opensource on the top of that(flaws gets detected and fixed faster than if it was a closed source thingy).
You know, the whole not owned by anyone, free for the community to use and abuse thing makes advertising redundant. Advertising a product implies ownership, and as Linux is owned by nobody, advertising Linux as a whole is making a claim to owning all of Linux.
i don't see how advertising something is making a claim of ownership. people who where shirts with logos on them could be said to advertise for whatever company owns the logo, yet they themselves don't necessarily have any stake in that company. linux advocacy is beneficial because the more people that use linux, the faster it improves, thus benefiting the group that invested in the advocacy.
WIndows and Mac are always bashing eachother.... Then Linux is over there saying "Whatever I own both of you and you know it!"

every thing you have trouble with windows, linux does it nicely with better funtions lool. and wont catch any virus :P ... but its advanced give it a try ;)

catch any virus? oh crap ubuntu just sneezed!!! get the biohazard suit!
charmednick 2 years ago
I use Linux and Windows pretty equally but I have to say this is wrong. Windows does nicely what linux has trouble doing; mainly hardware, and to expand that further network cards; especially printers, wireless cards and heaven forbid you ever have to install a 56k modem in linux.
Anyone who actually gets a virus should maybe consider taking some "computers for dummies" courses. In my 10+ years of using windows I've never even seen a virus
If you want to try it out I'd suggest googling kubuntu

Let's not give false credit here.
WaveMakers 2 years ago
I didn't get them either when i ran windows.

Over 10 years and never saw a virus? Better check and empty your anti-virus software's "quarantine", it's most likely pretty bloated by now.
Honestinwilkesbarre 2 years ago
I am using a 7 year old computer with ubuntu and Beryl working perfectly.
I installed Vista and it just rejected my NVIDIA onboard gpu and told me to upgrade my gfx card.
Bottom line is if you are not ready to try something new, dont talk sh*t about it.

You have nothing to lose.
cha0s008 2 years ago 3
I'm a gamer, and I use Linux. Every id Software game can be run naitively in Linux, and there are only a handful that can't be run in Wine (Halo and other Microsoft games).
FuzzyGhost 2 years ago 9
Actually, Halo can be runned on Wine now HURRAY! :D

5a73656e69 2 years ago
You're confusing 'user friendliness' with 'what I am used to'. Many things are more user friendly in distro's of Linux. Like:
1. One update tool to update ALL of your software.
2. A live CD (try before installing).
3. Easy & safe software installation through a package manager: search, click & install.
People who yell "Linux is for geeks!" should spent the same amount of time & effort getting to know Linux, as they did on Windows.
Before then, you're not qualified to make a good comparison.

spot on.

Why does everyone think windows suck?
i mean , mac's are the best but windows arent bad at all , infact their one of the best there! sure vista was a bit dissapointing but its not fucking crashing and crap 24/7!the only reason vista(bite that ANY version of windows is crashing is because that people download too much crap on there.

Linux is a kernel. The OS is named GNU, but nobody calls it that way which is not a good thing. Linus Torvalds is against free software and GNU OS is free software OS.
LouigiVerona 2 years ago
Linus Torvalds is NOT against free software. He and Richard Stallman from the FSF have some issues. The differences:
Torvalds: Software should be fully functional, and as free as possible. It should be able to compete in its current surroundings.
Stallman: Software should be fully free, and as functional as possible. We should strive to change the current surroundings, so the software can compete.
In my opinion, both ideas are very admirable and one should not exclude the other.
WaveMakers 2 years ago
Hm. That IS being against it. Functionality over freedom is basically the opposite of freedom over functionality. And in many interviews Torvalds mocked FSF.
Look at these comments - when people speak about the advantages of GNU, they speak about technical stuff. Nobody speaks about freedom. If the OS is called GNU or GNU/Linux, people would at least get interested to go to gnu . org
LouigiVerona 2 years ago
Really, it is not being against free software. Not many people speak of freedom, because they want their pc to work. Yes, we should strive for total freedom.
But putting yourself in a corner is not helping. Meeting people halfway (let's say: using prop. drivers to let your WiFi work) is essential. Offer them functionality WHILE they're changing.
Let's not create islands here. Both Torvalds AND Stallman want the same end result: free software for everyone. They just disagree on how to get there.
WaveMakers 2 years ago
Hard no to agree with you on meeting people halfway.
LouigiVerona 2 years ago
If Linus opposed free software, he wouldn't have released the kernel under the GPL.
They both have the same foals, but Linus tolerates non-free software a lot more than RMS.

There is a linux version of World of Goo :)
Download the demo and try it out!
There are games made for linux. And as linux grows more popular, more developers will make linux games.
On top of that, many games work very well with WINE. World of Warcraft; Half Life 2 and other Steam games; and many others.
And if you want to play a game that does not work with WINE, you can always dual boot :)
MNICY 2 years ago 2
Then why do you use windows emulators like wine if you don't like windows? Face it kid, windows and mac will always be better than linux.
OmgWizzs 3 years ago
The only reason why WINE comes in handy, is for using software that was written for Windows. The OS Windows, we do not need. For me, there is more great software in Linux without a Windows substitute, than the other way around.
Consistent Linux users are not people who actually prefer WIndows but don't, because of anti-microsoft sympathies. I use Linux because I find it more intuitive, safer, and a whole lot faster. And because most of my favourite software runs on it natively.
WaveMakers 2 years ago
wine is not an emulator
deepfriedsquirrel 2 years ago
WINE = WINE is not an emulator.
it's not emulation.
we use wine because the game industry targets predominantly windows, linux is good enough to use even windows programs.
can your windows do that?
addmoreice 2 years ago 3
Many games can be played at better performance on wine than Windows

You can play games on linux...

lol if linux was just as popular as windows it would have just as many security threats. Of all professions, programming should understand the importance of evidence when making these kinds of claims.
anthonzi 3 years ago
How's this for evidence: on a hacker convention, for three days, all hackers tried their best to hack a Mac, Windows PC and Linux PC. The Mac got hacked within two minutes, the Windows (Vista) PC took another day. After three days had past, the PC with Linux was still unhacked.
We're talking about really talented hackers here.
WaveMakers 3 years ago
Interesting points here. Do you have a link? I wonder how Vista could be more secure than Mac. I would love to see the flaws and holes they found.
Mut8edseabass 2 years ago
Actually, Linux owns 70% of the server marked. And they are not exactaly exposed to alot of viruses and flaws are they?
If Linux was as popular as Windows there would be a bigger interest for viruses to be created, however the server marked kind of proves its wrong.
Its simple: Linux is heck alot more secure than Windows, and its opensource on the top of that(flaws gets detected and fixed faster than if it was a closed source thingy).

Doesn't advertising go against the principles of Linux?
TheRealDamnSyko 3 years ago
How do you figure?
WaveMakers 3 years ago
You know, the whole not owned by anyone, free for the community to use and abuse thing makes advertising redundant. Advertising a product implies ownership, and as Linux is owned by nobody, advertising Linux as a whole is making a claim to owning all of Linux.
TheRealDamnSyko 3 years ago
i don't see how advertising something is making a claim of ownership. people who where shirts with logos on them could be said to advertise for whatever company owns the logo, yet they themselves don't necessarily have any stake in that company. linux advocacy is beneficial because the more people that use linux, the faster it improves, thus benefiting the group that invested in the advocacy.
