I wouldn't throw away that retaining ring for the bit retaining assembly. If the rubber dust cap gets worn and comes off you have a good chance of losing pieces from the the assembly. That part serves a purpose and is actually quite easy to put on.  Simply use 2 slot screwdrivers to pop it on after the plastic sleeve is on.
