Ok, am I the only person to notice there was little to no color in that courtyard/backyard? Why not paint the ugly primer gray brick a lovely earth inspired shade, they do make green paint now. Also it seems that sitting area would be roasting in the summer sun. Perhaps the DecorIY divas can come up with a make your own awning or recover and old patio umbrella episode? How about DIY patio shade curtains for those of us in viewer land who need help?
WARNING TO EVERYONE- Mexican primrose (the pink flowers they used) would be horrible to put in a planter like that. Once you plant them, they spread underground like weeds, and start popping up all over. We planted those in my backyard once, and they started showing up just EVERYWHERE, even like across the backyard on the whole other side.
Yess. For just mexican primrose, that's reallyyy good. But if you want like a multi-plant planter, I'm just saying that you might not want to use them as they will invade. Haha. But yes, I agree the planter is a great idea for them and I still love it. Thanks for the episode! :]
Collecting seeds & propagating them is the cheapest and easiest way to build up your garden - especially in the summer time when bedding costs a bomb. Propagation isn't rocket science either. You should also look at setting up a little compost area - or a wormery. It really isn't gross and it doesn't smell and it can take nearly all of your household scraps.
If I were you I'd make sure that bamboo screen was secure and then grow climbers along it.... they'll look beautiful and smell amazing!
i went to this really cool house in Eureeka Springs Ark. this lady would cove random things with cement made old jugs into planters and birdbaths made a wagon in to a childs picnic table ...lots of cool stuff she even had bottle trees they were cute (and colorful) and i seen this thing where you can turn a coffee cup and saucer into a really cute bid feeder!!
also: try to use paint that's GOOD for the environment! i found a company that ships this stuff made with the same pigments the Aztec used to paint thier temples. compleatly biodegradeable, they say, and oderless with NO fumes! yay!
At your local Starbucks they typically give away the coffee grounds. It should be in a bucket in the cafe, in silver bags with a "grounds for the garden" sticker on it. It's free, and particularly great for your roses!
Also, if you line the sides of your wooden planter with old plastic bags before adding compost, it will last a lot longer - the inside of the planter won't start to rot.
Cool wind chime idea! I always add rocks to the bottom of planters for drainage. I mentioned it in a couple of other episodes, so left it out of this one. Thanks for the reminder!
The idea of putting a plastic bag down to protect the wood is great too.
My grandpa made a wind chime out of old flatware. He used a rubber mallet to make flatware really flat then drilled holes in the ends. It was awesome!
Speaking of drainage...for the DIY planting box. Prop up the box with some rocks or concrete chunks and drill holes in the bottom. Then add some gravel over the holes so the plant roots have some breathing room.
Drainage? And, maybe important to know if you plant anything edible (like herbs), painting the inside isn't the best idea.

What about drainage?

OSB is not the best board to use as a planter material, if you do use it put MANY MANY coats of paint on it. otherwise it'll last you about a year :)

That is why a planter is GOOD for them. They are kept at bay in the planter and won't take over your yard.

there's no good reason to have a bottom piece in that planter. it's gonna rot in one season either way...

That quick tip is awesome! Kinda wondering if that can help lilies to grow nicely (cuz they prefer acidic soil... coffee is acidic enough).

Meg my girl: DRAINAGE. You forgot DRAINAGE. Otherwise, great eppy. How 'bout adding a wind chime made of old flatware or painted carpenter nails?
