Part of the reason I moved from the U.S. to Argentina is healthcare. As a young healthy person I could never justify spending $6000 a year on health insurance --mostly in case of an accident. In Argentina I have the comfort of knowing that if I need to go to the ER it is free -- that's how it should be and is in every other civilized country!
doctors are only able to focus on medicine, etc, because of a massive support system of equally-as-important-people. The local VA Home in my city just recently laid off ALL of their full-time kitchen staff, whom made real wages and received decent medical insurance, in the name of necessary budget cuts. The VA Home then filled these 16 full-time positions with 30 part-time which will recieve NO medical benefits. The 16 laid off individuals, if they so choose, may be rehired under new positions but, again, with NO medical benefits. How much longer does the health industry think that things can remain unchanged?

Why do you think we have the best health care in the world? Because the system, as it were, rewards people who achieve things via monetary compensation. If the government is run by an unqualified individual who steals an election and seeks to bankrupt the federal government in order to deregulate it to enrich his friends in the private sector who then get no-bid contracts it could be a bad idea. But if its run by a qualified government who has its people's best interest in mind it will be what is in in all other 1st world nations - a jewel in the crown like all other social services.
Well, we've tried allowing a heavily unregulated health care market attempt to self-correct itself (i.e. the hospitals, the doctors, the health insurance companies, and the medical manufacturers). They obviously can't be persuaded to make the adjustments necessary, and why should we expect them to... their gross revenues and profits have increased by over 100% while the quality and quantity of care has diminished. The government has given the health community a decade to fix themselves...
...and unfortunately, it seems as though government intervention, of at least some kind, is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Here's something to ponder: as a particular technology becomes more common and developed, its market price inherently lowers (i.e. a 50 inch plasma TV in 2003 listed for $5000 and can now be purchased for $1200), so how is it, for example, that an MRI, which has seen no major advancements in the last 10 years, continues to see a rising cost even at the administrative level??? IDK.
If the people didn't depend on social services in the first place America might have to rely on hard work to prosper. Personally, I would rather work hard and reap the rewards.

Part of the reason I moved from the U.S. to Argentina is healthcare. As a young healthy person I could never justify spending $6000 a year on health insurance --mostly in case of an accident. In Argentina I have the comfort of knowing that if I need to go to the ER it is free -- that's how it should be and is in every other civilized country!

doctors are only able to focus on medicine, etc, because of a massive support system of equally-as-important-people. They enable physicists, lawyers, and any other profession given to elitism to carry on with their work, without concerning themselves with all these other things that they aren't trained to do, don't want to do, don't have the strength to do, etc. Shouldn't they be supported in turn, not even out of moral necessity (subjective) but as crucial to the fabric of society? The local VA Home in my city just recently laid off ALL of their full-time kitchen staff, whom made real wages and received decent medical insurance, in the name of necessary budget cuts. The VA Home then filled these 16 full-time positions with 30 part-time which will recieve NO medical benefits. The 16 laid off individuals, if they so choose, may be rehired under new positions but, again, with NO medical benefits. How much longer does the health industry think that things can remain unchanged?

Well, we've tried allowing a heavily unregulated health care market attempt to self-correct itself (i.e. the hospitals, the doctors, the health insurance companies, and the medical manufacturers). They obviously can't be persuaded to make the adjustments necessary, and why should we expect them to... their gross revenues and profits have increased by over 100% while the quality and quantity of care has diminished. The government has given the health community a decade to fix themselves...

This is why the country is in trouble because the Pres does not understand basic business 101. A cheaper govt run option will undermine the insurance companies. The govt does not have a profit/loss sheet to contend with, they can print their own money, tax the inusrance companies to fund the public option and write laws that can undermine the insurance cos. Pres O has never ran a business. A lawyer /politician combo does not need to follow strict business guidelines to make money.

Try to remember back during the Bush years and the Republican controlled congress. The economy was doing good and employment increases were huge. In 2006 the Democrats tok over the house and senate. People like Frank and Dodd caused most of this and now with Obama wanting cap & trade and socialized health care, this country will spin into another depression. By the way, I am not a McCain supporter, he is just a white Obama, we need a leader like we had in Reagan.
