@rb1003 If you mean really slowly reading I assure you that I understand everything I read and also retention is good, because when you slowly read you think about what you are reading. Now all this crap about speed reading is not scientific and people´s interest behind these courses are only making money.
I challenge any so called speed reader to fully read and understand Being and Nothingness of Jean Paul Sartre, that would surely kick my ass but I doubt anyone could do it.

I spent the better part of 4 weeks obsessing over speed reading, photo reading and various other forms of reading and being able to comprehend at level far greater than I'm used.
then one day I no longer saw word for word but rather the paragraph as a whole picture! and since that day on what used to take me 3 hours now takes me 10 mintures! with a comprehension level of about 85 % first time reading.
Practice alot! and make work off of these principle,
My experience was similar, but I used a different technique. It took me two years to figure out why one time when I was reading for an economics exam, I read a whole paragraph instantaneously with the deepest and most beautiful comprehension I had ever had of any material I'd ever read before.
Wow. This guy just saved me $536.79. Be careful of some of those photographic reading courses, one I saw is designed to induct you into "THE SECRET" false religion (New Age). Thank you Sir for posting this video!
Secret is not a religion. I practice it everyday and does wanders. If it was a religion i would not be doing it. I think religion is one of man biggest faults.
Do you apply a different style when reading a "How-to" book versus a book for leisure? or do you approach each book the same way? I like the journal idea.
how does he catch the words at the end of the page? maybe i just have bad periphial vision, but i miss so much. and i wondered how much of what he read was retained.
when speed reading was the gentleman on the video moving his eyes? Were his eyes focusing on the page or was he trying to aviod any kind of focus on specific words on the page?
I would love to have these questions answered as they came up when i tried this method ..
Speed reading is real and it is not some BS (to supermanjunior). The notion that was explained pertains to the use of the eyes rather than vocalising the words. Thus, if you are able to transmit the signal to your brain using ur eyes instead of vocalising the contents, then u can read at a much accelerated pace. However, the ability to recall the contents are low because less brain activity has incurred. Therefore, revisions and mindmaps are significantly important to get around this problem.
Well. This problem could be circumvented if you have the ability to harness your imagination & association to its full potential whilst speed reading. A plethora of tools that allows for aiding imagination as suggested by Dominic O'Brien can be done by inserting: (1) exaggeration, (2) colour, (3) humour, (4) movement, (5) sight, (6) sound, (7) smell, (8) taste, (9)touch and finally, (10) logic.
In addition, association can be achieved by creating a purpose for the text in which you are essentially reading. There are many unimportant or irrelevant text that one could actually filter in order to maintain a high level of speed reading.
@Fullperson Forget it man! Don´t be foolished by all this nonsense bullshit about speed reading, if you really want to understand a book you got to go slowly page by page, that´s the way it is!
hey can anyone help me on speed reading. i am determined to succeed. I am reading slightly faster using a guide with a pencil. however i know this technique does work as ive seen others learn this way. how long does this method take to master???
once you learn how to do this skill its permantely there....its not like being able to lift 180 and when you get old you can only lift 90...because once u break that overload principle your eyes adapted to reading fast if you guys neeed any questions just ask me i can tell u everything...and i was 15 when i learned this skill and im 16 now and ive gotten a lot smarter from this skill...
Yes i like using the mind in different ways. Good going.
Someone told me [a skeptic] that there are no major studies proving comprehension of speed reading, but im not sure. i guess it depends on the technique and ability of the individual reader. Even people who read at a normal rate have trouble with comprehesion.
um this skill is more used in rading storys newpaper or poety not meant for mathe because math is the concept of understanding and serious thought put in so speedreading is the concept of picking up words...when you speedread your soppose to read fast eneogh that u see the whole picture in your head not one part at a time its not impossible to learn i thought it was but regardless how smart you are youll be smarter once you learn this because youll be able to pick up on things quicker!!!!
for begginers jus say 1 2 3 4 consectively and at the same time look at the word and your brain should comprehend overtime....its not a gift its a talent like riding a bike.....and dont read inside your head read with your eyes and it should jus flow
i learned how to speedread a year ago and still do im not as fast as him but i can read a page under 10 secounds basicly the faster your eyes can see the words the quicker your brain picks up its hard to do because jus like he said you have to overload your eyes and you go to speedread challenge or whatever its on youtube and do it 20 mins a day 4 about a month and youll be faster the more you overload the more levels ofspeedreading youll get and youll be faster
Can this technique be applied to any kind of books? I can see this technique fail when it is used on books that are very technical, books on such subjects as engineering, mathematical, computer programming and the like. Please respond to my comments.

Learning a new skill such as programming, mathematics or engineering takes practice in that discipline. The knowledge however could be learned much faster. Then someone can go off and practice it. What do you think?
This is actually a very legitimate system, and it's phenomenal how he found most of it out himself. I find that this is related to, but not, photoreading in many ways. One huge difference is that photoreading using the subconscious mind, and this seems to use the conscious.
Good method. However, it might be better to use index paper and pass it from up to down. This way you can push yourself to read faster and your hand or card will not slow you down by blocking following lines.
I recommed everybody who is wants to increase the speed of their reading to read a small yet very good book called 10 Days to Faster Reading by Abby Marks-Beale and The Princeton Language Institute ISBN # 0446676675 .

Factual information like in a non-fiction book can be devoured quickly, perhaps beyond 1000 WPM, certainly with photoreading as it might seem.
This is all very interesting, but I'm a bit skeptical. What kinds of studies have been done on speed reading comprehension and retention? Would he only get the basic gist, or would he be able to reiterate in detail a sophisticated philosophical argument or a nuanced unfolding of historical events?
I'm not sure about Marshall's technique, but I was reading an economics textbook a was really relaxed and enjoying the material and all of a sudden I went from reading groups of words to an entire paragraph at a time with total comprehension. It was a weird experience and I haven't been able to replicate it, but it was better than reading the way I used to read, total understanding of the material. I've been trying and trying to replicate it but so far no go.

Bullshit
I've speed read Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" in 2 days with absolute comprehension.
Trust me, you just need to be dedicated.
If you say speed reading is impossible.
Tell me, how often do you actually practice it.
You cant say it's impossible just by making foolish observations and comments.

"What a bunch of bullshit and nonsense!"
Sounds like a losers mind-set toward mastering a skill.
You will never master any skill with that mindset, trust me.
If you want to achieve anything great in life, change your way of thinking about a skill.
Speed-reading is real. I have learned it myself through books and lectures.
It takes at least one hour of practice to achieve mastery.
My advice for idiots: Think Differently.

"bla bla"? HA! HA! HA!
I don't recall chapter one being named "bla bla".
Overloading? Or just rereading a little more each time until you've got enough to get by.
Also, a 200 page book with 250 words per page (on average) will take the average reader approx 4 hours to finish.
This book is a pretty light topic so probably less.
3 hrs, vs 1.5 and you understand it the first time.
I don't see the benefit, unless this is to just get through material one doesn't want to read anyway.
