You could disuss the crosswinds and the knots but.. this airport is famous for its crosswinds so for me it looks like a construction mistake of the airport...
This is the highest airport in England and subject to vicious crosswinds on a regular basis. My daughter's flight landed there in May and said it was terrifying, she thought they were going to crash. The pilot aborted the landing once and said that if he had to do it a second time they would have to divert to another airport.
It's actually not a side-slip. That would be used to reduced altitude. What the pilot was doing is called "crabbing into the wind" what that allows is for your path to remain straight but your nose will be any number of degrees off the path. Depending on how strong the wind is will depend how much of a correction is needed.
Hello...; I had a flight like that to Leeds from Brussels airport. We had a touch and go and missed the landing. Then the 2nd one was the one, but my feelings inside the plane was like what I see here. Everybody was crying when we stopped and they closed the Leeds Bradford Airport after us. Do you know when this has been taken ?
Your video reports this spectacular landing in a way so the viewer can understand - very nicely done! Even if we would like to have more "wheels" at the end.
Absolutely awesome job, in really shitty but not unusual conditions at Leeds in the freaky little barbie jet. Clocked 1200 hours shoehorned into these machines but thankfully never had to face conditions quite as tasty as this. Great job guys. Textbook crosswind approach and landing.
Keep it a little fast for the gusts, sideslip as needed for the crosswind, be ready to go-around if conditions dictate. All in a nomal days work for the pro pilot.
I think the plane was weaving quite much when approaching. Surely the pilot could keep it more stable? But near ground the pilot focused more and landed beautifully.
Erm actually it wasn't....The plane being in that position was intentional in order to fight the wind speed... It's called a 'Side-Slip' manouvere. It's also used to reduce speed if Hydraulics fail
holy hell. i mean...HOLY FREAKIN HELL! I own a very small plane and I won't go out with more than 8 knots direct cross. That landing was a freakin thing of beauty. Great skills. Damn!
@gregarious121 i know we all as pilots have our comfort limits but i wouls suggest that if you are nervous flying with an 8 knot cross wind you should go up with an instructor in stronger winds. you never know when you might get caught out and the winds pick up. could save your life one day.... just a suggestion but you are right, awesome flying in a strong cross wind...
@toospeed31 i agree with you great landing ,,but 121 needs to practice in stronger winds with someone because you never know when you will be up and things change for the worst,,,all my training in 172 and warriors were in 10 to 17kts with 26 gusts ( initial training was limited to 5kts) and yes i know those numbers are above the design limits of those aircraft but you never know when you will need those skills even with proper planning things can change
Mother nature was toss'in this bird all over! Hard work for the P1 hack sawing at the yolk, followed by just the right amount (and well timed) input of right rudder just before touchdown. It's the rough ones that are the most satisfying.
Make a search for theses two words: "Dash 8" and "Corvo" and check out the first video on the list. It's one of the most amazing short field landings with very strong winds on youtube, and probably on the whole internet! SIMPLY UMBELIEVABLE !!!!!
@eerockk111 The pilots judgement was spot on, there is very little risk, pilots train for these type of landings (and worse). You have to land! I remember the day this was taken, and it was very very windy everywhere in the UK so even if they diverted it would have been just as bad at another airport. It just looks bad because it is a relativity small airliner. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't have enjoyed the landing but those guys do an amazing job and don't take risks with peoples lives!
bloody hell! thats one good landing man cant get better than that. CRJ700 coped well in that conditions like. But i bet thep passengers through up though. lol

geee that was bumpy, credits to the flight crew, but, should they have missed it;voices would have said that they never should have taken the decision to land
what were the wind and weather conditions like during final approach and landing??? I would guess that there was very stiff crosswinds greater than 5 degrees and at at least 15 knots so there must have been severe crosswind component??? fair play to the Captain & First Officer for doing an amazing job!!! xxxx
