@kiralyszilard88 the tank detaches from the orbiter and breaks up in the atmosphere. This whole process happens over French Polynesia where there are very very few people There's not too many videos of it actually exploding, although I have tracked one down. Go to nasa . gov, search for Marshall Space Flight Center, click on their home page, and then in their search box, type in "STS 29 External tank" and it should be the second thing that comes up. For some reason it's not allowing me to link
Yep. It's the only part of the shuttle that's not recovered after launch. That's partly why they have to do the "Plus-X/Pitch" maneuver after separation and take pictures of it.
It's the only chance they get to see how well it held together during ascent.
@KKM121 I watched live as well, but I think this isn't live. These shots are just used for analysation after launch. It's not necessary to have this live.
@patrj Like Gezelem said, it's probably a cloud-like feature. It moves across the screen just as fast as the clouds and it's very near to more disturbances in the otherwise uniform cloud mass. No UFO today, too bad though :(
Is this video real? I dont know why but it looks like a 3D video :(

what happens with the external tank?

The triangle is the mount that attaches the tank to the shuttle. You can see it 'edge-on' at :23 in the video.
