Wow! That was amazing. I was really surprised to see it snowing even as you were at the northern end of the grapevine descending down that massive canyon. I couldn't believe the traffic back up the southbound 5.
The state of California and thier infinite stupidity, have decided that iff the weather is bad enough to need chains on the Grapevine, they'll shut it down instead. That way, they don't have to do any repairs on the highway. Like they think there ISN'T any needed repairs allready!
californians dont use snow tires. Back east its a common routine every fall and spring to change out your tires for snow tires. Snow tires with mostly urban moderate snow on heavily traveled routes in new york and new england, which are well prepared for plowing, and where salt is used is a different situation than how we deal with snow out here. we use chain controls over moutain passes. Everyone is advised to carry chains but thats mainly over the sierra not in southern california.
So none of those thousands of cars had chains in the trunk, nor are their any chain staff on the road to assist with installation on that route. We also don’t use salt out here. Event the seasoned boston driver can’t drive over a mountain in a snowstorm with regular tires and no chains
I just got over the grapevine heading north when they closed the highway. At the bottom of the grapevine there was big dust devils that pelted the cars with sand and dirt that stuck to everything wet. That made it hard to see or get off the exit.
i was coming from san francisco down to riverside, and what is normally a 7 hour drive became 17hours!!! traffic was moving about 20 yards every 20 minutes or so
What drivers will put up with to get to Bakersfield.

I was not that far behind the car that made this video. They closed the grapevine just as we approached its incline from the Los Angeles side.

We saw the effects of the closure coming the other direction on the 101. The traffic jam stretched from Santa Barbara to about Ventura.
