  • Naaa not Bass.....Mullet lol i knew the mop on his head was the name of some fish !!

  • Fantastic version, Kennys Bass hogging the song sounds perfect,.....

  • lol this reminds me of Will Sasso and Kenny Rogers Jackass/Punkd

  • on the bass! Had no idea he played bass!...is that a MusicMan, P-Bass, or Jazz?

  • fantastic song and video,

  • love it

  • Kenny looks like he's higher than a giraffe's ass.

  • @therealdude1 (hey, they recorded 'Just Dropped In, to See What Condition My Condition Was In - check that one out - definitely not country)

  • @therealdude1 you could blindfold him with a piece of dental floss.

  • @therealdude1 Took me a second but I got it. Never heard that one before

  • @frank47hammer - a giraffe's ass is plenty high.

  • @therealdude1 Yes, I've got it now.

  • 10 people don't realize Kenny would still kick their ass.

  • hatte ich mir schlimmer vorgestellt. geht eigentlich

  • Kenny kicks ass on the bass.

  • He mimmicks Jim Morrison the way he closes his eyes, and tilts his head back frequently. Add to that the seemingly "relaxed"-I'll just call it that- state of mind he's in...

  • sounds to me, those 9 people who clicked dislike don't know good music when it hits you in the face. Too bad, they're missing out

  • OMG! Look at him, doesn't look like the same man!

  • ist der high?

  • a depressive song, but also a very powerful one, in the same vein as "Coming Home" and "Born on the 4th of July" movies.

  • an up-tempo heart-breaking song

  • Damn, I love this tune... those are some pretty classic facial expressions though on Kenny in between lines, especially in the 2nd verse *crazy Asian war*...

  • @megaladon73

i guess he's referring to vietnam war

  • @HalfPinoy100 No, it's the Korean war, I think.

  • THIS VIDEO CHANGED MY LIFE ,,, LOVE "THE KENNY" FOX ROCKS

  • At some points Kenny actually looks like Jim Morrison in his bearded later years...Great song

  • 8 people suck.

  • Who is the girl in the band !

  • I know this vid is about Kenny but listen to those harmonies. Awesome!

  • Wonderful video. He plays a really good bass! He also plays the harmonica. Does anyone know if he plays the piano as well?

  • Ol Kenny was doing some fancy bass playing there. Didn't know he knew how to play the guitar.

  • Perfect Quality! You sir are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • My daughter and my friend we hang out together; Anyway it is hard work. Phoebe used to react to Shawn a Shirley.

  • I had never seen Kenny Rogers without white hair until today lol.

  • @mikedavis5671 It's almost like he's way younger in 1972. lol

  • Dig those crazy matching suits!! LOL!

  • I think Kenny usewd to do a lot of downers eg. ludes, seconal - he sure looks mellowed out!

  • what a brilliant copy. so clear and new looking.

  • Kenny plays a mean bass!

  • Not a big country fan but 8 people on here don't know good music!

  • Respond to this video... This is rock not country

  • My brother and I did the bgs on this record...great fun...Jimmy Bowen producing...in the downstairs studio at TTG

  • ben bu adami seviyorum ya

  • Amazing song - a sledgehammer hidden in a velvet cushion.

  • I have experienced the words of this song and it sucks

  • i was 12 years old saw kenny& had my first crush ever when my father said you ever bring some long haired SOB like that home i'll grab it & kiss it i wanted to write kenny & ask him to meet my dad .lol

  • I've never seen him without grey hair until now...

  • Holy shit its Arn Anderson!

  • @Calis708 thought the same thing lol

  • Growing up in NY I was ever if rarely tuned into country music. It was rock, pop, even disco in my early youth. But Kenny just spanned the music boards and hit in all genres of music, and I always appreciated his talents, his harmony and his songs. After seeing this video and just how "fantastic" he sounded live, I'm that much more appreciative. You truly are a muiscal genius! ~God Bless~.

  • How cute...he goofed and realized it and smiled...then I looked at his eyes...I think he is a little high on Mary Jane, not Ruby.... :)

  • I was fortunate to see Kenny Rogers & The 1st Edition when they performed at Disneyland. They were new to me then but I still like to hear them. Thank you for posting this live performance. ~OneKewpie~

  • Holy OLD SCHOOL! Wow! I remeber the Gambler days as a kid, but this is younger Kenny yet! Awesome even though looks like kenny smoked a doobie just before this song! haha~

  • to bad he didnt give a damn bout these words!! col. t. parch. atlanta

  • Lo mejor para encontrarse con Dios..

  • This was taped at the C. F. T.O. Studios in Toronto for their "Rollin on the River" T.V. Show. They were really a good band. Great players and singers, Terry Williams is a fine guitar player and Kenny Rogers did a nice job playing that old Telecaster Bass. Mickey Jones on drums who had a recurring role on Home Improvement, Mike Settle on guitar and Mary Arnold on vocals who is Roger Miller's widow.

  • @1967jaj

    Thank you for this summary!!

Sounds a lot like JJ. Cale.

But tell me, Kenny plays this cool Bass. I thought it is a Precision Bass?

    Is there a difference between.?

I read that Kenny plays Jazz before...

This is a very good combination i think.

Have a great day or night..

  • Es una cancion que nos une a tod

os.La esperanza,la ilusion y la la forma de vivir.

  • Such bittersweet stuff. My first proposal was to a dearheart named Ruby. She away from home in TX... me from GA. She in the US Army, me in the US Marines.

We dated, we dreamed and we pretended. After our joint Russian language training and 30 years later....I wonder about the pretty babies we could have made as husband and wife.

  • this was back when ken could say "i am the walrus" and mean it..

  • And ya KNOW he had to have smelled as good as he looked and sounded...yuuuuuuuuuum!

  • He so reminds me of my husband back then..even the little smirks he does every now & then. I never knew Kenny looked like that.

  • still got the original in my cassette tapes!

  • rubys a slut!!!!!!!!!

  • Never knew Kenny was a bass player - Telecaster bass - great post, thanks

  • Just for fun, I am going to point at that this was recorded the same year that "Fat Albert" made its debut! Can anyone seen any connections between the two?

  • Kenny is one smooth operator in this show. He looked like this in the 60's and 70's. Let that plastic surgeon starve.....

  • 100 times before ?!! Damn ! Ruby is one hot nymphomaniac ! And that fool can't get it up anymore ha ha ha ! poor useless devil !! He's lucky she's not doing it right in front of his face . Some women can be that shity ha ha ha ha

  • good song

  • @dennisjonkristensen

    Yes it certainly is!

  • The best Punk song of Denmark

  • @hjalmer LOL i did not know He was from Denmark. I´m also LOL

  • That is classic!

  • Where did you get this video, I never knew him looking like that and I am 44 years old, I always seem him with salt and pepper hair and beard, not red hair, glasses and an ear ring. But it definately was a younger Kenny Rogers.

  • Es una canción bellísima en todos los aspectos

  • That bass line is killer.

  • Ain't no woman going to talk out the door on Kenny.

  • "For god´s sake turn around!"

  • This song, along with Lying Eyes from the Eagles must be two of the best songs ever written that tell a story. These songs are excellent from start to end. The story lines make you want to listen to the end of songs to hear how they turn out.

  • wow!! that's beautiful..i love it.

  • He's a hell of a good bassist. Didnt know that.

  • just posted my first song on youtube oh it's not Kenny but I wish he could listen to it...Mommo - sometimes im shy. tx

  • oh yh memories. x

  • In 1972, this was the face of music. In 2011....That's the face of your local pedophile. Jesus this is creepy. Was the serial killer look, the "in fashion" for this period?

  • @jtack19791 Yes it was , and it got even more "creepy" than this. It just shows how the music was so much better back then. Real people....real subjects.

  • @whitewitchoz. I think you may have missed the point a little. I'm just sayin.

  • @jtack19791 I got the point. I just gave a positive spin on my reply. Back then people looked healthy and hairy. Today's face of music looks weak and frail with very short and/or thining hair ...just another reason why today's music sucks.

  • Did he usually play bass in First Edition?

  • @chillman4130 Yep. Kenny Rogers sang lead and played bass.

  • @chillman4130 Yes he did.

He also played it with the Bobby Doyle Trio and The New Christy Minstrals.

I wrote a bio on The First Edition for wikipedia

  • Great song by a great artist, I really appreciate the verse that goes...'Its hard to love a man whos legs are bent n paralysed, and the wants n needs of a woman your age Ruby I realise'....makes me so sad cause my uncle developed MS and his wife could'nt cope and left him,I can see both sides of the coin though, music is the greatest of all the arts!!!!

  • am 16 n i swear i nvr knew this song wz from the 70s! am a 90s kid n i am stuck in 70s 80s n early 90s music.... bring back this type of music! wen entertainment had class!!

  • thank you very much

  • looks like he jas a feline on his face lol

  • Great post, and Kenny was so fine and smooth - the First Edition was great group.

  • That song is so very sad----the war was awful. Social commentary in a velvet voice.

I'll never listen to that song again, way too sad but beautiful.

  • Ruby, you whore!!!

  • @salvin1792

    FUNNYY!!!

  • Kenny acts so nonchalant in this show. Cool, cool stuff. Bring it back, Kenny, and let that plastic surgeon bilk someone else.

  • Awesome to see this post from 1972! Childhood memories. Why does his face here remind me of Jim Morrison - LOL?

  • Jesus, this reminds me of my mom, she'd play this all the time

  • love his voice what a good lookin man esp as he got older

  • Kenny rocks on the bass. This is a good post.

  • I luv this song so much............i'm 16, i think i was born in the wrong generation.

  • AWESOME!

  • good old kenny :)

  • Saw Kenny in AUckland and he was awesome!

  • I never realized what a fabulous bass man he is

  • The best year of my life. This song and video reminds me the better times in my life!

  • i like casino steel and gary holtons version bether

  • He has always been a handsome man but I can't get over that you can find this kind of stuff on YouTube! Thanks for posting this. It brought back memories of my childhood!

  • amazin - my childhood just came floodin' back

  • All these posts about how awesome it is...and not one about how sexy he was.

  • @BuickGirl1986 lol i think he looked a lot better before plastic surgery whether he was aging or not

  • @SMPfilmfan im only just 24 so hes been old as long as i can remember...but in this vid wow...Kinda looks like Skooter Jenings I like me rugged men...Long hair...Beards

  • @BuickGirl1986 im 14 and i always figured girls like a nice cleaned up kinda guy but i guess everybody is different

  • Nothing like my style of music, but this is one of my favourite songs ever! Great voice, text and music.

  • Kenny is one of the greatest vocalists ever and he is/was a great bassist as well.

  • @cruiserweight190 Does he ever play bass, these days? I never knew he played anything, till I saw this video.

  • @SuperNezzy I know he plays both guitar and bass and also the harmonica I really don't know if he still brings them out on stage during live shows anymore, my guess is that he doesn't since it is a suprise to alot of people when they see him in his First Edition days. its to bad because most dismiss him as just a vocalist when he really is a truly talented musician and songwriter he's very underrated in terms of his musical talent in my opinion.

  • Gotta love those strangely out of place Go Go boots. The stage gear transcends time and place

  • this was when kenny was friends with herb

  • Ruby! Are you mad at your man?

  • Nice song. Always those background vocals when they kick in.

  • classic

  • wow, he's a great bass player too

  • @SUNSNARE06 I never knew he played bass! awesome!!!!

  • Oh man that was good.

  • dude kenny's base playing is as amazing as his singing!

  • great sound pal albatamk

  • great great music...

  • @nigellong123 good sound's pal alba

  • LOOOVE THOSE BOOOOTS!!!!

  • nice vid cant beat old country , just aint like this no more

  • I like the songs of him when he used to sing with Messina.

  • My father took me to Market Hall in Dallas one Sunday in 1980-81 to attend some event that was happening that day and when we got there we found out Kenny would be there pushing his boot line. My father took me over to his vendors spot and we saw Kenny as he was leaving. A fan took a picture of him as he was walking by and Kenny damn near punched the guy in the face. I have never been witness to a more arrogant display of asshole-ship in my life. My father was completely disappointed..

  • @OldSkaterGuy ..that's bad... Now lets listen to this song..and the words in it.. :) Peace man. cause war is not for us...

  • @OldSkaterGuy that's a shame, but i can imagine a camera all of a sudden going off in your face must have been a shock. but i've also heard he's a jerk.

  • I love this...........he was gorgeous.........

  • this song is so sad...this was my favorite song when i was 5....

  • @AnthonyRay505 -its funny looking back. loved this song but had no idea what it was really about. same thing with the gambler. thirty years really explains alot of shit, huh?

  • @briargoatkilla people didnt wanna hear or know at a time but i always come back to hunt you.

  • Not the saddest, but a good song just the same...was searching songs earlier,no luck...one which being about a Lt. Kelly...the other called "Routine Patrol".....old 45's...might be showing my age now.

  • Saddest song from the Viet Nam era.

  • @blacktopaz8 Hairy pussy !! hahaha

  • @blacktopaz8 you coulda made your point about 'less is more' without being so vulgar, couldn't ya?

  • i like this old song

  • What this song is really saying is 'Ruuuuuu beeeee... don't take your vag to town'-- love this song.

  • @antipalin Yeah that's what it's saying, without the vulgarity which is what makes it so good!

  • Classic. Love it.

  • wow, I bet that ruby and lucille are related. :)

LOL, He aint on ludes, he probably just got gone smoking a fattie.

  • CLASSIC SONG!!! AWESOME VOICE!!!

  • god he is soo shitfaced and yet so cool!;) great performance!

  • He's very handsome.

  • My first look at a middle aged Kenny Rogers. Unlike Elvis who looked better before his fat Elvis days Kenny looks better now!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @CatpurrRobertaBobbi This isn't a middle aged Kenny.... this is a young Kenny!

  • @CatpurrRobertaBobbi He was like 34 here, how is that middle aged? lol

  • Kenny is a country GOD. Him and Dolly of course.

  • one word.....Ludes

  • He is wearing a pair of glasses I saw on a skit on YouTube called "Pedophile Beards."

  • By far the best version that I ever heard of this song.......it keeps amazing me.

That is what real music sounds like!

Great band, great song and great singer!

  • love it...
