Hi, I was wondering... what size would you say are the "needles" you are working with (I know that they are home made, want to look for wooden rods) and how many stitches to length of the project?
I am not sure what it is really. It would be great to take camping as a mattress but too heavy and hot as a blanket and too thick for a rug so at the moment it is used as a throw on my futon.
You could try it it is simple to set up all i did was cut a broom handle in half sharpen the ends and wrapped elastic around the other end to stop the wool coming off. I have used around 25 balls (they can be just off cuts, or you dont have to use so many) and get knitting the only difficult bit is keeping all the balls in check, they roll around and get tangled (even though we made a devise to keep them seperated).
Sorry for not replying sooner to your message regarding my Garden knitting. To answer your question it was quite tricky to get the hang of it but thats all the fun. I did make the knitting needles from a broom handle cut in half and then sharpened the ends and put elastic at the other end to stop the threads from falling off but i do have to confess i have only adapted another persons idea i did not come up with it myself.
So sorry for not replying sooner you left a message a year ago with regards to my Garden knitting. So glad you were amazed!!! I made the Needles from a broom handle, just cut it in half and sharpened the ends. I have to confess though the large knitting idea was not mine i just adapted what i had seen.
I can only apologise for my lack of reply. I received your message a year ago regarding my garden knitting (as i like to call it). I haven't finished the project but i like to think of it as on-going. I was never sure what i was going to use it for possibly a rug as it is too heavy for a blanket or a picnic blanket it would be so comfy to sit on. I may eventually when it is finished post another video to show what it looks like completed.

I finally found some big needles so I
could make a rug like that in garter
stitch instead of the stockenette.

I would have to get two wooden dowels in
my case. I can't find wooden broom handels
here. Most of them are metal with plastic
coating.

How do you knit with something that big and
so many threads? I would be losing about
half if I tried. I don't know since I never
tried. The biggest needles I can find are
size 15 and they don't come close to what you
are knitting with unless you made the needles
with wooden dowels. Even the knitting needles
would have to be homemade.
