If this is Cliburn from the Tchaikovsky competition in the late 1950s it is a very embarassing performance from the pianist who produced the greatest single performance of any piano concerto (Rachmaninoff 3rd, of course). I wonder if this was a required "competition piece" that he didn't care about because it is full of wrong notes, lacks insight, and sounds awkward; it was a miracle they let him proceed to the finals.
Well, I, for one, would take this performance over Cziffra and Berezovsky any time. Wrong notes and all, it has a touch of grandeur and shows rare musicianship and insight.
Plenty of mistakes, wrong keys, bad phrasing... Is he Van Cliburn really?? It can't be possible. This perfomance is terrible! Myself and many students of the Conservatory play this Etude much more better...!

Yes, this is from the Tchaik Competition - it's V. C. alright. Please remember that is is...1) Live in concert, not edited 2) a HUGE competition and a big deal 3) for those of us that have played this piece, it's extremely difficult to play live without mistakes. Cliburn was a very young man here! Very passionate performance.
@Stoneyridger Listen to Berezovsky´s live recording. Jesus christ, this Cliburn makes many mistakes and tries to be too romantic in TRANSCENDENTAL studies which are about sound and music....It doesnt really matter that Berezovsky has a newer recording - both are live and you can still hear the music
i think it is a great piece and a great performance so shut the fuck up and just sit tight and listen..........always remember that NO ONE can play like that today
Of course this is Cliburn everybody-- this is from the Tchaikovsky Competition 1958. Why do you all think this is a bad performance? Why do you equate perfection with accuracy? It is a sincere and lyrical performance, as is typical with Cliburn in his performances, even the more note-accurate ones. This performance is mentioned in the Cliburn biography.
@richterkleiber I agree... Plus it's a live, unedited performance. There are many other live performances on YT with mistakes too. Even though this isn't my favorite performance, it's still great and I still hear the horse galloping in this one.
This performance is taken from the semi-finals of the 1950 Tchaikovsky Competion. I agree with Iggerard48: there is great emotion in this playing, and, to me, wonderfully represents early Cliburn. Yes, there are missed notes, and perhaps he didn't have as much opportunity to practice the work as he did others.
I first heard this recording on a record that I obtained from the Soviet Union (designated title at this time), and along with this piece, it featured the Kabalesky Rondo..
God do I hate armchair critics. Did anyone hear actually listen to the piece with their eyes closed and pay attention to the feeling shown. Is this a perfect performance? Of course not. As an analogy, it would be as if Tiger Woods had a less than perfect day and shot only par on a tough us open course rather than 5 under. A truly bad pianist doesn't or can't play like this.
some "anti-Cliburn" guy must have got a crappy performance from somewhere and claimed it was by Van Cliburn. Van Cliburn's better than this, I know this for sure.
It's obvious that he has an image in mind but it doesn't seem to have been an entirely convincing one for either himself or most especially for me. Yeech!
