Thank you for this post. My favorite Steely Dan tune. This was a bit of "workmans" version. I've heard them rock this out far more aggressively but, as usual the arrangement, the musicianship and the vocal harmonies were perfect.
It's not about high school but very specifically about college - Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson NY. And unfortunately for people like myself who live nearby, Becker & Fagen have been true to their word, at least as performers.
Back in 1970 I was on the prom circuit opening for Jay and the Americans . Jays group was great and well dressed. One gig two guys are in the band wearing cave man rags. It was hysterical. Everyone else in tuxedos. It was Fagan and Becker. Ended up doing a bit better than my band.
Does anybody know the name of the song that they played here on the outro of the concert? It was the closer of many of their concerts several years ago...the band would play while Donald and Walter would exit the stage....
Had the pleasure of meeting Donald Fagen at Levon Helm's Midnight ramble in Woodstock over the summer. What a cool dude! He did a version of Shakedown Street that blew me away!
Ya, It's Jon Herington by the way, and he does an awesome job of the solos, once again. With a couple of broken fingers, he could still play circles around the anonymous tools who are still trying to form a clean sounding F Maj chord. Just sayin'

Always ready to put tongue firmly in one’s cheek where Steely Dan is concerned, but isn’t that the theme from "Charlie's Angels” (Henry Mancini) as the outro music?
Dont compare the guitarist to the originals ,he would also be thought of as no good if he merely copied note for note .He has played on several more recent SD albums and is there Musical Director on tour so they trust him.Have said that i do prefer melodic (even simple) playing compared to jazzy flourishes ,any how Love the girls,mr mcdonald, love to Walter love to keith and as always Donald.you my hero.
You're right,markgr122.You must still have the record sleeve, lost mine. How could 2 such amazing players as Randall and Diaz simply drop off the radar for so long?
Skunk Baxter played the solos of Midnight Cruiser,Only a Fool Would Say That,,Change of the Guard and played pedal steel solos on Brooklyn( Owes the Charmer..), and Fire in the Hole.Ellio Randall,a fine fine player played the solos on Reelin and Kings on Steely Dans first record Cant buy a Thrill
elliot randall was the guitar player on that 1st record.played solos on Reeling in the Years,Do It Again, and later,on Allendale.Only solo Skunk Baxter played on early was on Changing of the Guard, very tasty.Jimmy page said that Randall's solo on Reeling was his all time favorite.
Herrington is ok but can not duplicate the guitar work by Baxter on this song. He doesn't even try. Jeff and Denny were the best. My favorite SD song also.
@missionmanon...this actually isn't about high school...it's about donald fagen getting busted for pot in the 60's after his g/f, dorothy white, turned state's witness against him while he was attending bard college in annandale-on-hudson, ny, known as "the william and mary of the north"...fagen was so upset with the school's cooperation in the arrests that he didn't return to attend graduation...fagen did return 16 years later to accept an honorary doctorate and apology from the college...

Who ever is playing the drums is playing the song too slow and pretty its sloppy drumming. The guitar solo was very uninspiring. Skunk Baxter is better.
Are you a drummer? The drummer on stage is Keith Carlock, one of the best drummer's around today and has played with a whole host of amazing musicians. Just the fact that he's playing with dan for so long is quite an achievement. I think you should review your comment
Yeah maybe, but I'd have to argue that was intentional more than anything. However, I'm not discounting that he was having an off day either! Personally, I love Carlock's work with Steely Dan, in studio and all the live shows I've seen, but that's one drummer's opinion against another's and there is no point disputing tastes!
@sevadaj Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but you do know Steve Gadd made a career out of playing "a little behind the beat", and it seems like he has done OK... wouldnt you say so? I think Keith is gonna be just fine haha.
amazing!! I have always loved this song.. but like every other Steely Dan song, I don't have any idea what they are talking about.... It is all one private joke!

What's with the online bickering?
With all that aside, I'd like to say that this is my Favorite Steely Dan song.
I've been in love with Fagen and Becker ever since I was 7. I'm almost 20 now and they will never cease being my most favorite band, ever.
Oh, and I saw them in Atl, GA in August and I'm not sure if I've recovered yet.
