i am Disappointed with this Camera :(

Picture quality was too bad than what i were expecting! even cheaper Mini DV camcorder's quality is better then this one.

This Cam produces Blurry and grainy video!! and goes horrible in low lights,

Footage (which is unfortunately compressed in MPG by this Camcorder) is also not supportable for Most Video converter and Editors :(

If you want to have this for Filming / Movie purpose Don't go For it!!!

@Talal0khalid Its a standard Definition Camera that costs $200-300, you shouldn't be expecting to get professional looking video. I didn't ever find the picture blurry or grainy when played back on a standard definition TV, if you intend to play back home video on a HDTV, buy a HD camera. And if you are looking for a camera to Film Movies or short films always, always, always get a camera with an external audio in port. (which this camera doesn't have).

for those of you having trouble importing into iMovie or Windows Movie Maker - download a free utility called HandBrake.

It can convert to mp4 and is cross platform.

There's also another utility called mpegstreamclip that is harder to use but has more options

Have Sony DCR CX100 AND HDR CX100?

but this camera have HD movie? and 60x zoom?

@DyeSwatForeign This camera does not have High Def recording. It only has 60x Zoom. It does record in 16x9 (1.78:1) widescreen though. The HDR CX100 Does record in High Def, but only has 10x zoom. As far as i can tell there is on such thing as a Sony DCR CX100, only the HDR CX100. This review was for the DCR SX40. I don't know that your post is about/ asking exactly, if this isn't helpful please re phrase your post/ question.

how did you put the videos on windows movie maker mine doesnt work on that. is there anything i can do to put it on there if it matters i have the SX41 not 40 i think the only difference is the 8gb memory on mine. but can you help me with the WMM? thanks

I am using a 32Bit edition of Vista and the files work fine in WMM, Pinnacle, and Sony Vegas 9 (Pro and Movie Studio). If you ever have problems editing the files try to find 3rd party codecs or check to make sure you're using the latest version of your editing suite.

This was done with Pinnacle, but yes I usually use Vegas (Pro 9). I render my videos using the standard 1080p 60i setting. If your quality isn't very good it might be the format your saving your videos as. Try a few different formats and see which one you like best, .avi, .mov, etc. I hope you can figure it out!

Great review! Music got a little distracting at times, but not a big issue.

I've heard others say that Windows Movie Maker won't accept the movie files that this camera shoots in. So, I have a couple questions. Which version of Windows & WMM do you use, or do you use Mac? Secondly, is the included software required to upload the videos properly, or can you just hook up the camera (or use a card reader) to drag & drop movies? Thanks.

You don't have to use Sony's Picture Motion Browser (the included software) to do anything. In fact I would recommend against installing it... its useless.

Hi, the Sony DCR SX40 records and saves video as .MPG files. I was able to edit footage from the SX40 in Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle Studio. Video from this camera can be edited in Sony Vegas, however the audio does not transfer (I should mention that I'm using and version of vegas without updates). The Software that comes with the camera is Sony's PMB, which is more of a media browser than editing suite. It allows you to trim Video's but thats it. I use Sony Vegas for editing.

It does not fit any fish eye lenses, it doesn't have any threads to mount a fish eye to. You could tape one on, but I wouldn't recommend that! If you are looking for a cheap camera that fits a fish eye and you want HD, I recommend the Sony HDR-CX100. It has 30mm threads if I remember correctly , and it has a great slow motion record feature that is great for filming skateboard tricks.

for the bottom of the camera is the hole for tripods? and will it fit in any tripod or only sonys?

It will fit any standard Tripod.  You don't have to buy a Sony brand Tripod.
