@gardensummerland Good for you! you have an open mind-- I'm Scottish, and like you, I enjoy both versions, ( esepciallywhen I'm dancinga dlow foxtrot) but I was really surprised when The Proclaimers covered this. Much of their work is beautifully-written ballads. You should try them. I note that you are an American --their "Letter from America" is a cheerful lament( I know that sounds conradictory!) about Scottish emigrants leaving to settle in America.
