I just watched part of this tonight; then crawled behind my Gretsch Catalina kickin' figures for "These Chains' with a cassette.....NOBODY had that......NOBODY. They called him "the Kid". I HATE speaking of an older and now Elsewhere drum brother in past tense. God Bless Porcaros all who were his family and friends. I cried like a BRAT the day he left.....! This is one of the TIGHTEST combos. PERIOD. Ever. MIKE suffers from ALS/Lou Gehrig's now....there is no cure.......
@jadrummer110 im sorry that real music doesnt revolve around 100% heavy metal bullshit that has no real pattern, no real skill involved. i could play any heavy metal song you name on the drums, jeff porcaro is in a league of his own. no drummer who has any >real< sense is going to say hes a "wimpy drummer". hes more skilled than anyone else you could name, he has his own style of music known as legendary, im just sorry you cant see that
@jadrummer110 well someone's a bit full of themselves arent they. judging from that, i could probably run circles around you and im pretty shit, even if im best in my year. those drummers are good, sure, but they cant play like jeff porcaro.
@jadrummer110 "I am a better overall drummer than jeff porcaro" also you're glory days were in the 70's and quickly faded due to heavy rainfall in the winter, so dont talk about "old technology" and this is you at your peak in the 70's with that shitty band you claim would have been bigger than QUEEN, you're an idiot.
Watch the great "jadrummer110" in the zone in the 70's note the fantastic cowbell hehe.
@jadrummer110 well, if you were a true believer in one god, you would not be one to put yourself above others like this. better to be humble than to be proud mate.
@jadrummer110 yeah just not a better in terms of being able to play or upload any videos or proof of anything at all whatsoever, U r full of shit completely, dont go to all of the Avenged Sevenfold videos and laugh at the recently deceaced drummer to the fans mourning him, is that what your god tells you to do?, all the racism on the Tosin Abasi forums, you're a loser, everyone can see it, you're a chump loser old man, but you're the "best in the business" right pops?.
@rodolfo11 In another vid from this series he's playing a Pearl Free-Floating drum. Makes sense because he was endorsing Pearl at the time. Hard to tell the shell material or depth. Looks metal, probably a 4" or 5".
Another great example of 'simplicity is king.' Big grooves like this are possible when you've got big ears and little ego. Sit on your kit and play a 16th note groove for 20 minutes without a fill. Do it everyday for one month (w/a metronome) and learn to 'hear' the groove without fills or crashes. This isn't about technique, it's about editing; leave out everything that needn't be there. Jeff could do that because he grew up playing music, not drums.
I wonder why Mike won't play bass in Toto anymore, so Toto had to hire Phil Collins' bassist....the only thing I can think of, to explain it, is Mike Porcaro won't lock in with Simon Phillips the same way he did with Jeff....
He realy was the "Elvis" of his game. I bought the vidio back in 1988 for insperation..
Stillgot it but now im 43 Im realy into it more than ever...buy the way folk's" it takes to much some time to imitate/or is that" imertate someone...he left a ledacey to which we all try and live up to...God bless you Jeff...Mike and Joe....but last but not least..
simple yet complicated..jeff's drumming just made the music better!!!! no matter how easy the drum beat was jeff always had that tightness and groove that no other drummer has
@Croatch Lifetime keys freak here! See my profile image? I DIRECTLY relate to those Poorboy frames parked across Jeffrey's nose. I lived at Southern Miss ("TO THE TOP!") because I've never been licensed to drive a car. Music biz MAJOR I was; Alzheimer's runs in my family. i'm learning kit to ward off the FX! At FOURTY? I've played skins since '07. Jeff's Dad ain't no slouch; his book is Insanely difficult! I cried like a BRAT when Jeff left!!
Jeff's groove is perfect. Simple, but spot on. Reminds me of Phil Gould in some ways... He adds a "feel" to the music that other drummers don't have.
@utahdrumtech Funny you should mention Phil Gould. Jeff had said that Phil was one of his favorite drummers to listen to. Phil does have great touch and spot-on fills. Still, nobody played the hi-hat with more distinction than Jeff. JR Robinson is also tremendous on the hat, but Jeff had greater texture. Find the CD "Guitar Workshop in LA" to hear some of Jeff's deepest pockets ever. RIP JP.
Man, Jeff's Groove is just in that Perfect pocket he always had. And Mike's groove just suits the tune Perfectly. Just not a single flaw in this Groove. Both Jeff And Mike are very Underapreciated musicians, Also a question. When he combines hitting two symbols, like A crash and Splash, does anyone know what that might be called?
I found out only AFTER his death how great a musician Jeff Porcaro really was. He played and recorded with the WORLD'S most famous and excellent musical personalities. I won't say Jeff was the greatest drummer ever, that's a matter of personal discretion. But you cannot blow off his resume and career accomplishments. Personally, I love his crisp, clean sound and his subtle creativity. He never overplayed the song and always delivered just the perfect amount of emotive energy...a true GREAT.
