This movie isn't anywhere nearly as awful as people make it out to be. It's a very sad and depressing story, yes, but i wasn't sickened or disturbed by it in the least and have seen far worse films. Maybe if the acting had been a little better i would have been drawn into and affected by it more.

This reminds me of an actual murder... Can't remember the name but it was a woman who took in two girls for a man (traveling carnival I think was his job) and he gave her money. She abused the two, took one in the basement and carved 'whore' and stuff in her stomach. Had her boys torture her. She was caught in the end but one of the girls died...

My GF and I used to be Carnies and we were in Sussex County N.J. working a fair when Jack was filming the Ferris wheel scene, We were off to the side watching. Jack was really cool too, he played the Ferris Wheel Operator, They were covering him in dirt and fake tattoos to many him look like a Carnie from the 50's. I never did see the finishes film, but the book was really intense. Hope to see the movie fianally soon.

Well done movie, heres my take on it. If you are easily disturbed, you should not watch this movie. If, on the other hand, you are prepared for a long look into hell. then it will keep you glued and shocked at what horrible things people can do. This story is based basically of off the events and murder of Sylvia Liken (RIP). My girlfriend couldn't handle it. i dont blame her though, this movie did not hold back.

This was one, hard f***ing movie to watch. I thought, "who could write this kind of sadistic garbage and for what purpose"? When I find out it's based on a real life crime, my heart sinks. I watched again and feel even worse. The sad thing is, this stuff continues to go on 4o years later. An endless cycle of mentally/physically abused victims passing on the experience to a new generation of victims. I hope someday we evolve beyond this.

ruth died pretty easily and painlessly - i wanted her to suffer. why couldn't a cop just go down to the basement. i know this is loosely based and i don't think sylvias sister was beaten like that after the first initial paddlings. still...in this movie why wouln't davey say "go to the basement" - this is horror personified.

No offence, but in the real Sylvia Likens case, I think she should have abused Jennie/Jenny a little bit more then one little whip. I mean they let Slyvia take all the blame, and she didn't tell anyone, so Jenny/Jennie should've gotten something, so Slyvia wasn't alone

Yeah I heard that An American Crime was better. Though I can understand how the filmmakers made this movie was so blunt and since I watch a lot of horror movies, this wasn't hard to watch. The actress who played Ruth protrayed a self loathing woman, who internalized misogyniistic teaching and who hated her ruined life. No, surpise, that Gertrude's her husband beat her and then divorced her.
we don't know if this actualy happened. check out the movie "An American Crime". it depicts this incident also .The details in that movie match the details of the case of Gertrude who tortured Silvia Likens. some details are simple: Gertuted stared to carve the words" I 'm a prostitute and proud of it", but one of the boys finished it. G Slivia told friends at school about Gertrudes pregnant daughter.
Silvia was forced to strip and put coke bottles insider her, but no semen was found.
Jack Ketchum has taken a lot of criticism for writing this and making it into a movie, but i guess those people didn't get the point. This is a great movie but i won't be watching it again anytime soon.

This movie is great...i cant believe this actually happened, specially when that woman burned her private part! its a must see and a lesson to learn.....never keep ur mouth shut on situations like these or similar to this. What a sad death.

I saw this movie, and truthfully the most disturbing true story ever. I would suggest if you haven't seen it don't bother its so hard to stomach. and for those of you who know the story behind Sylvia Likens, please say a prayer for her.

I haven't seen this one yet but i know that there is another movie about the same story and you can watch here on youtube. the tittle is AN AMERICAN CRIME.. I think is almost the same, just very few changes.. Check it out.

But in fair warning, it's absolutely disgusting. Some parts made me think that it's rating of R is too gentle. The trailer does not do this movie it's true visceral justice - it's very sad and disturbing, but at the same time, hard to stop watching.

ruth died pretty easily and painlessly - i wanted her to suffer. why couldn't a cop just go down to the basement. i know this is loosely based and i don't think sylvias sister was beaten like that after the first initial paddlings. still...in this movie why wouln't davey say "go to the basement" - this is horror personified.

I saw this movie yesterday and it really got under my skin. It was so fucked up but the acting was so realistic. I haven't seen An American Crime but I don't think it can beat this, even if it is closer to the real story.

No offence, but in the real Sylvia Likens case, I think she should have abused Jennie/Jenny a little bit more then one little whip. I mean they let Slyvia take all the blame, and she didn't tell anyone, so Jenny/Jennie should've gotten something, so Slyvia wasn't alone

Not based on a true story, but rather is inspired by. A tough film to get through. Very honest and very brutal, it'll make you want to scream out against child abuse, no doubt.

Yeah I heard that An American Crime was better. Though I can understand how the filmmakers made this movie was so blunt and since I watch a lot of horror movies, this wasn't hard to watch. It was all meant to easily get the point across. I personally didn't like the casting of the mother but that's just me. It's sad that anything similar to this has even happened to start with.

we don't know if this actualy happened. check out the movie "An American Crime". it depicts this incident also .The details in that movie match the details of the case of Gertrude who tortured Silvia Likens. some details are simple: Gertuted stared to carve the words" I 'm a prostitute and proud of it", but one of the boys finished it. G Slivia told friends at school about Gertrudes pregnant daughter.
Silvia was forced to strip and put coke bottles insider her, but no semen was found.

Jack Ketchum has taken a lot of criticism for writing this and making it into a movie, but i guess those people didn't get the point. This is a great movie but i won't be watching it again anytime soon.
