Steve, wondering if you might possibly add a quick video on how to make "Cut Shot" from a standard bird shot cartridge. It could be helpful information for the guy who only has a pocket knife and needs a slug in a 30 second pinch.
@cyclops5276 Disadvantage being that (at least in my experience) the cutshot does not play well with a self-loader... You need a break-action shotgun.
Steve, what software program are you using to achieve the comic book effect used to frame your videos? I'm guessing you are using a Mac system and Apple software from the looks of the logo. Anyway, I wanted to commend you on the well thought out and developed video presentations you provide. Excellent material.
@chadsenters00 well of course the birdshot. but if your looking for a weight of 1 oz, buck and standard 8 shot weigh the same just you can get about 100 rounds of 8 shot for $19.08 at walmart before tax. im not talking about the 100 round value pack, thats just a rip off if your interested in doing what was shown in this video cause the value packs cost 22.97. and yes they are 1 1/8 oz each shell but you only need 1 oz for the slug mold. if all else fails get winchester hollow point slugs
someone should finish the warning statement. here....WARNING! FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY! WARNING! SHOTSHELL RELOADING CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. YOU ARE FAR MORE LIKELY TO LOOK LIKE TWO FACE FROM BATMAN AFTER FIRING HOMEMADE SHOTSHELS. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO AVOID LOOKING LIKE TWO FACE FROM BATMAN..JUST BUY SLUGS FROM THE MANUFACTURER INSTEAD OF BIRDSHOT.
i used the same liquid nails stuff u used and after i shot 2 shells and the 3rd one faild to eject is there another way to seal a slug please right back
@Strokethis241 Try placing the sealant on the bottom of the slug when use push it into the wad. Maybe try a small amount of wax up front to keep the wad from moving prior to use.
Instead of using a metal mold and using metal tools to remove the slug from the cast, in the spirit of improvisation I tried using a wood plank with a hole in it to create a slug "mold". The wood doesn't flash burn, and it seems to work well but I cant seem to get the proper dimensions... do you have any ideas for an improvsed lead pourer?
Why not just do cut shells? While this is cool, it doesn't seem like as good of a method to make emergency use slugs. Doing cut shells only takes a couple seconds per round, and they'll still take deer fine.
Less powder, (less recoil,) no crimp= far less velocity!!!
Interesting mod but so much easier to just make your own slugs and reload fired shells with an inexpensive Lee LoadAll shotgun reloader press.
You oversimplified your process by not explaining the prep necessary for the mold prior to casting the slug and used a metal tool to remove the sprue and slug from the mold...very bad for the mold!!!
@lucastimmer you need an fac to own slugs mate. if i was to make them it would be just my luck that the old bill would stop by for one of his visits. lol ps
"And you don't need a license or whatever to buy shells, powder or any other components and usually they don't even bother asking for a SGC or FAC when buying primers or buying primed empty hulls. So all in all, if you want to, it's easy!"

hey, where do you get all those tools to make it? Only thing I notice was the homemade is not riffled slugs, so its not as good as the aim, but hey. You can make slugs cheaper ^^
With less of a powder charge, wouldn't the modified slug potentially get stuck in a longer barrel such as a 28 incher? I use an 18.5 so it wouldn't be an issue.
just for people who can't find slug molds for your gauge(exp, .410 bore), you just need to find a round ball mold for a slightly smaller caliber then the bore of the barrel(in the case of a .410 bore, .390-.395 caliber round ball), it'll work great to 50 yards.
Good to know, have you seen ever a guy cut the shot shell right behind the wad and the front portion of the shell stays together acting like a slug but its shot pellets and not a slug?I saw a guy do it on youtube but wonder how safe it is to do that.
ok, we need some specs. what size shell are you using, if you are using a 3 and a half inch, my 2 and 3/4 shell i won't need to cut down. for part 4 can you include whether the barrel is rifled or smooth, i would love to see some distance shots with both.
thanks for the great money saving idea on this, i am ordering my mold now.
I hope you survive the initial zombie horde attack, so that you might lead our country in the rebuilding efforts once we overcome them!!!
lol... but very great vid series dude, you have saved me some serious money, which leads to some serious training... Thanks again and keep up the great work.
How do they run through the mag tube? Is there enough shoulder on the nose of the (cut) shells to keep them from compressing? Either way, a great, simple concept as usual! Keep it up Brother!
wow thats a big difference in sound and recoil. im going to start doing the same thing. i love my slugs for home defense and practice with them alot and it can be expensive so saving money doing what i love to protect my family and property why not. thanks again steve for the info and especially for the time and hard work SAR for life god bless you and yours
@redmule02 Thats because the powder in the home made slugs is meant for birdshot and is not putting out as much FPS or velocity as a store bought one will do. From a reloading stance this doesn't seem to safe. But we must remember that in order to find new ways of reloading we must take risks sooner or later. This seems to work quite well, don't think I will do it any time soon though.
BTW slugs for home defense is a bad idea, just use bird shot, its just as deadly and devastating.
@sotik i respect your point and thanks for the info but ive tried this and it works great having a slug at the fraction of recoil putting you back on target soon after the first shot.
i use centerion home defense ammo and brenneke home defense slugs. slugs and buckshot are for me in my personal better for home protection doesnt matter if he's wear light body amour or heavy clothing buckshot magnum and slugs will it him up and knock him down birdshot get absorb by heavy clothing he will get hurt
@redmule02 Oh I agree when I reload slugs I go for the recipe that has less recoil. I was just stating that is most likely why it sounded so different and had such less recoil. Also if you feel better using slugs then all the more power to you. I just remember some guys doing tests in mobile homes with slugs, buckshot and bird shot. Slugs would travel through the whole house while buckshot a few walls. Up close and personal bird shot is nasty.
@redmule02 Either way it always comes down to being safe and having lots of practice. I will admit I do have a slug or two in my shotgun saddle in case I come across a person who needs more umpth to take down. I just pray I never have to use them :D God bless and have fun!
@sotik conti from first, he will get hurt but its not going to do the job. the only reason i wont use bird shot is that i doesnt have the capabilities of a solid kill. being a 75th ranger for 6 years we were taught take care of your own by any mean necessary and my own right now is my family plain and simple i buy the best to get the best i like to train with buckshot and slugs so after awhile it can hurt you bank and shoulder lol so a box of cheaper rounds 100 shell for $20 and $6 for 5 slugs
@sotik you know it comes up to some good math here for me keep the factory loads down to a minium and the cheapier stuff that now shoot just like the factory slugs with less recoil. plus the saiga 12 loves um so. sorry for ranting on but this is my take and again thanks for the advise and your time sir be safe and god bless..............SAR VIEWER FOR LIFE
I used to follow the same basic procedure of shell cutting. Except I took the bird shot, wrapped it in a small piece of military grade duct tape, and re-inserted it back into the wad and into the shell. This made a quite effective prefrag round. The shot remained together until contact, then came apart. Watermelons and jugs of water explode like never seen before. The shotgun is such a versatile tool.
Not bad considering home-made has no rifling.... Water jug comparison would have been nice to see the effect of reduced power on the home-made version..... additionally most target loads are steel shot making them impossible to melt... Overall its a super video series!!!!! Thanks

That "rifling" on the factory slugs does nothing to improve their accuracy.
Did you actually watch the video?
The home made ones were actually MORE accurate than the "rifled" slugs.
