Why didn't MTV remember their roots on their 30th anniversary celebration....wait they didn't do that their original channel, they played a marathon of Jersey Shore >:(
Thanks to other 24/7 music video stations (TheCoolTV) I am able to name ALL of those 80s music videos :D (19 year old)
WOW, i think i just went 4:00 without blinking,, and cant wipe the smile off my face. Brain is now a puddle trying to remember all those awesome songs and images hitting me at warp speed.
This piece was part of an ABC prime time special called "MTV 10" commemorating the channel's 10th anniversary. The show featured special performances by Aerosmith with the Boston Pops orchestra, REM from their hometown of Athens, GA, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. This montage was produced by Mark Pellington and Bruce Leddy.
When I was in college I took a film appreciation class and the Prof said "The best movies being made today are the music videos on MTV. The music is crap so, I just turn down the sound."
Oh wow - thank you so much for making this! It brings back so many memories. I used to be a compulsive taper of MTV vids as well, but unfortunately my tapes didn't make it till now. That were truly the days, loads of great music - and the music videos had real stories and content, something you rarely see in the music vids created today. Anyway, thank you for the nostalgic travel in time and the good memories :)
Nope, MTV hasn't been MTV in 15 years. The 1st 15 years will be the "music period." The last 15 will be the "shit garbage degradation of society reality" period.
It's never coming back folks. We had something wonderful. Just cherish it for what it was and hang on to the memories. Our kids will have no idea why this was important...unless they discover it for themselves.
@Korndawg79...So true...I watched MTV from the 1st second it launched in 81.....all the way to the early-mid 90's when the music died..and I feel sad for my neice and nephews to be growing up now in the age of "Reality crap shows, cell phones for all, electronic notebooks, facebook, twitter, post "Great" MTV, post Columbine..I realize how lucky I really am to be a part of the 1 and ONLY "MTV Generation" We were truley the last on the boat for those experiences!!
For all of you who miss the original MTV, DAPOW.com offers Continuous New Music Video Artists of all genres. Check it out and show support for the concept. Commercial Free, Non-Stop Music Videos... DAPOW.com
The problem started when they stopped showing Bananarama videos....then when Satan noticed this she put a curse on MTV and condemned them to show shit reality TV....forever
Seriously, MTV was only good for about six years. It was when they started playing Home Sweet Home every five minutes that it really started to suck big huge balls.
I remember taping some of the footage from their anniversary programming, which I since lost. I remember this clip, though, they were playing it repeatedly for a week or so.
IF you look at the schedule for a week of MTV programming , you will see that there is a lot of room for the shows on one channel and videos on the other. The way they fill time on the channels is by having mini marathon programming. Whats that you ask? ITs when they run 5 hours of one show then 4 of another. Really whos gonna sit and watch 5 hours 0f Cribs? THey are just lazy and dont care anymore
When time machines are invented, here is my to-do list:
1. Go back in time to 1981 to warn the original MTV vj's about the new MTV. When they laugh and say that is impossible, I give them photo evidence.
2. Apply for a job as a vj in 1990-late 90s and prevent rap and pop from rising in popularity; instead, I give more time to play hard rock, heavy metal, grunge, and 80s-mid 90s pop hits.
@IwantmyMTVback Also, you never acknowledge the real cause, the root of MTV's demise. Reality TV shows. It's not rap, it's not pop music that's the problem or any style of music. After all, it was 'music television'. It's supposed to be agnostic. What it was never supposed to be, though, was a voyeurism channel.
@IwantmyMTVback Why rap? Rap and hip hop is awesome. So are other forms of music. And if rap being popular ruined MTV, then please explain Jersey Shore. All they listen to is electro. Your gun is pointed at the wrong target.
1. Go back to 1982, Become a part of the Culture Club band (background singer idc) after Jon & Boy split, I come rushing in, turning him straight. hehe ;)
2. Not so much heavy metal and grunge, more 80s & mid 90s pop, evolving into some of the good nowadays music. NO RAP!!
3. Tell everyone in the Twin Towers to take a break for the day and come over for some ice cream & tell NG about the terrorists.
I remember this 10th anniversary stuff and how it seemed like it'd been such a long time, and now it's 20 years since that. Funny to think this was a couple of months before Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came along and MTV started catering to yet also exploiting grunge and so-called alternative rock. Now MTV doesn't acknowledge these anniversaries because 25 and 30 years makes it sound old.
I was very little to remember the late 80's, but I do remember the early 90's, I used to loooove MTV, I would watch it all the time, and thier cartoons like Daria were pretty cool too, it sucks now, I wish they's realized it and went back to what it was... MUSIC TELEVISION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seems like the consensus is unanimous that MTV was once good but is now crap. One would think that whoever is in charge would realize this and go back to making MTV actually about music again. I'm genuinely curious how they're benefiting from airing nothing but boring garbage now. The bottom line in television is always profit, so maybe more viewers really ARE into stupid reality shows these days. I guess stranger things have happened.
@ral1334 I've often felt the exact same about SNL. I think they just have...I mean I think they're already super-rich and do things not for the money any more. Like they think they rule over everything.
i just want a music industry that doesn't dwell on copyright issues and not launch brilliat songs into other countries. i want a music industry that plays ALL GENRES on every freakin music television. i dont want every frekain radio and music tv to just play gaga. what happened to the other brilliant artists? -_-
I'm 19, but was raised on classic rock and metal by my dad, I remember when I was younger (late 90s) they still played actual music on MTV, I loved it whenever Guns N Roses would come on. Now I agree with what everyone says, the network (along with VH1), is nothing but a shithole that promotes nothing but skank ass teenagers and weed smoking gangbangers. It's complete crap....
This is when it was still good. The first 10 years were definitely the best. How the hell does the present MTV survive? It's shit. WTF is with all their reality shows nowadays? Oh well, at least there is the memories.
damn, i mean some of the reality shows are cool, but it doesn't belong on MUSIC telivison. Make a new channel for those channels, and bring back MUSIC Telivison.
the hunger to go back to this time for soooo many is ridiculous. Why doesnt MTV wake up and create a 80's-90's channel again just for that era. I think they OWE the people that, its what MADE them to begin with.
@KC1971J In Canada we can get the US stream of MTV Hits, which shows videos, MTV Europe has it own Local channels like MTV Spain and MTV Portugal, they are have MTV Rock, Pop, Jams.
The decline of MTV all started with reality shows..the first "Real World"...etc...The first 10 years of MTV was the best...they should just call themselves the teen retard channel now...I mean really who watches any of that garbage ?

Here's the list of video from the beginning and between the 3:47 mark and the 3:53 mark in order that's on the second version of The Image Factory: Higher Ground (Red Hot Chili Peppers) Ashes To Ashes (David Bowie) Shock The Monkey (Peter Gabriel) Need You Tonight (INXS) Money For Nothing (Dire Straits) Rockit (Herbie Hancock) Do You Wanna Touch Me (Joan Jett) Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) California Girls (David Lee Roth) I Want A New Drug (Huey Lewis)
1983-89 was my teenage and i enjoyed watching MTV till early 2000-2001. Then the music was music. These songs remind me of my teenage. Those were the days.
I agree about the absolute uselessness of MTV's programming now, but it doesn't mean videos can't be made and viewed anymore. The internet has changed a lot of things in the last 10 years. It's just a matter of evolution. We have websites like YouTube/Pitchfork/Consequence of Sound/etc where good video content can still be viewed. There is still creativity in the air and that'll never die out.
The obvious reason as to why music sucks these days is simply the marketing schemes they use are soo manipulative. They put these stupid songs on itunes as singles for 1.29 when they shouldn't even sell singles like that. They should raise the price of singles and lower the album sales. Then see how many ppl will run out and buy a Ke$ha album. She should be a 1 hit wonder. These singles artists with their terrible music is taking over and its such ashame.
Man I'm 19 and i wish i was a teen in the 80s. Music was so much better back then mainly because of the variety that was shown all on one station. You could be black and of course love Janet and Michael but still have a love for Madonna and The Culture club or vice versa. Now all you have is the same wack people singing the same type of song which is trash. I don't even want MTV to show videos again especially if they're gonna show the people of today. Its not worth it actually.
Can we just get rid of the reality shows and go back to MUSIC Television?
-The Jersey Shore? A bunch of whores that live together and go to the beach alot? You need to be more creative than that.
-Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant? A bunch of girls who shouldve kept their legs crossed? Yea i see enough of that at school.
MTV Cribs? Seriously? I have a house too, wanna see!?? Sorry i dont have 9 cars, 4 pools and a home theatre. But i do have a pile of dirty clothes youre welcome to wash for me ;)
@xXxStopAndStarexXx After we get rid of the reality shows, the music needs to live up to the 80's. No domination of one genre...and lots of bands making great music that we've never heard before. That was what made MTV so alluring back then.
@xXxStopAndStarexXx I think a bit of the problem may very well be that we simply don't have the depth in the music industry with a lack of real quality bands. The 80's stood out for one thing probably more than anything else and that was the tidal wave of genuinely kickass bands and performers knocking out track after track of truely awesome music. It's a shame I just don't think there is as much talent around these days.
I use to feel that way i was a teen in the 90's and a kid in 80's we wanted music video. But kids today don't care to see music videos on tv anymore. because they have the internet.@xXxStopAndStarexXx
even though i want the old MTV back, i want the MTV format like it used to be in the early 90s of music videos and some very little shows and commercial breaks had music videos in between the shows. instead i have to wake up early to see them and/or go through the trouble and look them up online :/
Honestly MTV's descent started in the late 80's when the certain elements complained that the network was racist. Labels threatened to pull their vids if MTV did not diversify and so it did. Its ratings plummeted and they received complaints but refused to offer any balance. To try to regain its audience, MTV started airing movies, cartoons, then game shows, and started the well detested reality show trend. I haven't watched MTV since the late 80's.
@threadgillb I remember that debate--MTV defended itself saying it was a ROCK station. I'm all for diversity, but I wonder, could it have diversified in more marketable ways?
MTV was about the music then... now they're just really lame... They soooooooooooooooo sold out..... Music is important to me.... They need to change they're name... I wish a real music channel still existed
I remember this commercial. Finally, taped it on some VCR tape between movies...and now, who even has VCR's? Yep, MTv was big back then. Premiers were something to keep up on. Funny to think back to then.
im just glad i got to grow up in the 80's todays music is just crap i dont listen to it ...ireally cant see any of todays band comeing out with 10 plus albums with just about every song being good.....but wish i was a teen in the 60's and 70's so i could have seen all the greats live hendrix the doors zeppelin beatles floyd in there hey day but i did get to see floyd live twice in 94 so its still good .....but could have been better
Why didn't MTV remember their roots on their 30th anniversary celebration....wait they didn't do that their original channel, they played a marathon of Jersey Shore >:(

MTV now stands for "MORON Televison", while BET now stands for "BUFFOONERY Entertainment"
Or, is it "Butts, Every Time?"
..and what happened to "Music, First", VH1? ..It's, now, all about shallow tweens, gays, b-list celebrities, and wannabe celebrities (celebreality)..

the hunger to go back to this time for soooo many is ridiculous. Why doesnt MTV wake up and create a 80's-90's channel again just for that era. I think they OWE the people that, its what MADE them to begin with.
tim7691 9 months ago
Why is it still called MTV? Shouldn't it be called RTV(reality television).
lrcdert2010 9 months ago 31
@lrcdert2010 Moron Television, Last year they also cut off the programming for MTV Europe.
nextstep333 9 months ago
@nextstep333 So, there is no more MTV in Europe? If it sucks as bad as MTV here in America does, it's no great loss.
KC1971J 7 months ago
@KC1971J In Canada we can get the US stream of MTV Hits, which shows videos, MTV Europe has it own Local channels like MTV Spain and MTV Portugal, they are have MTV Rock, Pop, Jams.

@TheSwiftDecline yeah that's true but the Corps. are claiming copyrights & blocking video sooo now it's not hardly 'FREE' here now either. :(

MTV used to be soooo great, but today you can't watch it anymore, it's crap...
TheSunnyGirl83 1 year ago
The obvious reason as to why music sucks these days is simply the marketing schemes they use are soo manipulative. They put these stupid songs on itunes as singles for 1.29 when they shouldn't even sell singles like that. They should raise the price of singles and lower the album sales. Then see how many ppl will run out and buy a Ke$ha album. She should be a 1 hit wonder. These singles artists with their terrible music is taking over and its such ashame.
fresh77896 1 year ago 2

@xXxStopAndStarexXx Haha, couldn't have said it better myself.
TheSwiftDecline 1 year ago
@xXxStopAndStarexXx After we get rid of the reality shows, the music needs to live up to the 80's. No domination of one genre...and lots of bands making great music that we've never heard before. That was what made MTV so alluring back then.
PTheodore33 1 year ago 2
@xXxStopAndStarexXx hahaha best comment fTw! :D
MrSuperMarijuana 10 months ago
@xXxStopAndStarexXx How do you define that other sucky MTV reality show "The Hills"? Or "The Real World" or "Road Rules"?
bucky468 10 months ago
@xXxStopAndStarexXx I think a bit of the problem may very well be that we simply don't have the depth in the music industry with a lack of real quality bands. The 80's stood out for one thing probably more than anything else and that was the tidal wave of genuinely kickass bands and performers knocking out track after track of truely awesome music. It's a shame I just don't think there is as much talent around these days.
taipan185 9 months ago
I use to feel that way i was a teen in the 90's and a kid in 80's we wanted music video. But kids today don't care to see music videos on tv anymore. because they have the internet.@xXxStopAndStarexXx

@xXxStopAndStarexXx - costs too much. Much easier to make so-called "reality shows", dumb down the population, and pocket the difference

haha so awesome :D
i like those videos in the background
even though i want the old MTV back, i want the MTV format like it used to be in the early 90s of music videos and some very little shows and commercial breaks had music videos in between the shows. instead i have to wake up early to see them and/or go through the trouble and look them up online :/

I haven't watched MTV since the late 80's.
threadgillb 1 year ago
@threadgillb I remember that debate--MTV defended itself saying it was a ROCK station. I'm all for diversity, but I wonder, could it have diversified in more marketable ways?
