I'll tell you exactly what's up with the vocal differences here. A good majority comes down to style but there are shortcomings in tyler's technique here. First off, Plant sings the intro (AW-A-A) in a low falsetto, it's actually a bit hard to hit on the head because most rock and roll singers (especially american ones) think of the falsetto to be used in a higher place in their range. One thing that was particularly great about Plant was that he knew when and where to apply falsetto,

His chest and head voice overlap in a sweeter spot than Tyler and you know, I'm almost sure that Tyler realized this as soon as he picked up the piece. He pulls off the rest of the song fine, save some diction and meter problems. As for the rest of the band, Kramer... well on the first take he totally blew it on the beat. This beat is famous for being a musical palindrome, it's played the same backwards as it is

Overall I feel that Jimmy Page should be the only guitarist on this song because with 2 extra guitarists it gets muddy and they can't seem to play to Jimmy's rhythm with the kind of hair precision one would need to make it sound great. On the bright side, Tyler is one of the few people who could come close to covering the song with any kind of accuracy.

@axltyler Heh, that all depends on what year of Robert Plant's life we're talking about here. 1969-1973 he most definitely could, his range was a bit bigger than Steven Tyler's, clocking out at about... I believe A6 during a live recording. That's hearsay though, it's hard to find hard evidence of that. Here is what makes "Dream On" so difficult. I am in a Led Zeppelin cover band, and unlike a lot of the wannabes I actually do know my stuff. I first heard Dream on when I was about 6 years old,

The song "Dream On" is in F minor, which is a difficult key to sing in for many vocalists. Tyler had done his homework with the arrangement on that one. And the scream, dream on, dream on, dream on, A-HA-A-HA-HA-HA-A-HA-HA-A, is just in a bit of a spot in the range that is difficult to do. But if you had given plant the piece in the years I mentioned I would argue he would do it

neither Plant could sing this song. After 1970 he couldnt sing immigrant song and communication breakdown. After 1980 he couldnt sing none of his songs in the same tone as in studio. And think about this. Steven and Robert are the SAME age, how was roberts voice at 1990?????? Aerosmith boom was almost with Crazy Amazing etc. those songs were with a 45 years old Steven ... theres a lot of credit for his voice...

I'd say Immigrant Song/Communication Breakdown lost much of its effectiveness after '71 (in terms of Plant's vocals). Although, '72 did produce some strong versions. However, I do agree that by 1980 his tone of voice was significantly different.

@mnunezper plant is a true chest vocalist , and in the days of early led Zeppelin, he would sing up to 3 hours show, back then there was no sound monitors fall back for the singer;s just side fills. so long shows to many nights on. night after night.this makes it very hard for a singer to hold on to there voice , the tone and the key are very high , no one could hold a note like Robert. Steve him self has said there's only one Robert plant, but still Steve has done a nice job here . cheers

Así mucho mejor. Me parece muy bien que Aerosmith se arriesgase con una canción tan difícil como "Inmigrant Song" pero les quedó muy mal. Y Plant ya la cagó cantando el Innuendo de Queen en el concierto homenaje...la canción le pega a la voz pero se le ovido la letra al patán...a seguir escuchando buena música.
