I agree with what these folks are trying to accomplish, but honestly 50 Cent needs to stop making a fortune singing the praises of violence and death before calling for penal reform.
He's made a fortune selling drugs also.. He knows first hand how drug laws inflate the cost of drugs, driving harder criminals into the business., encouraging more and more violence.
Check out Dallas County Texas and what is happening there. Dallas "Coujnty" Texas leads all other "states" in this country in the number of citizens wrongfully convicted.
In one song, she says one word and shes sending a mixed message? No, the message is clear and the subject has nothing to do about drugs, its about the excessive sentencing for first time offenders, which is not fair, in light to all the other otrascities and crimes.
Mariah's not trying to send a mixed message? Is that why in "It's Like That", she's written about a certain drug "taking me higher"? I don't necessarily support such draconian laws regarding drug use, but most of the hip-hop artists routinely get up and rap and sing flauntingly about their wanton drug.
Instead of getting up and trying to look politically intelligent, how about sending a consistent message in your job (singing and rapping) and your speeches?
It doesn't have to do with drug use as much as the excessive punishment for getting caught--especially when many more people of color are caught, while more white people actually take drugs. Once imprisoned they are turned on to more serious crimes to survive, and once out, can't get social services, have a record, no job training. It is systematic racism, not if drugs are good or bad. She is trying to protect herself from bad press, like legislators=why these laws haven't been repealed.
"Lockdown, USA," which chronicles hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons' quest to repeal New York State's Rockefeller Drug Laws. These laws can send first-time, non-violent drug offenders to prison for 15 years to life. On June 4, 2003, MC attended a rally to help raise awareness with New York City's youth. "Lockdown, USA" received its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary is expected to hit theaters all over the country this winter.
