I love Sarah McLachlan, but I don't think she nailed it on this song. It is very pretty and slow tempoed and meloncholy. But the song is about optimism and should have a bit of wistufllness about iit. People metnion Karen Carpenter's version which is nice because it has a pure innocence to it. Jason Mraz's version is also very heartfelt.
Does it matter if this is the best rendition or not? All I know, Sarah has done a great job doing this! Does it matter if its better than Kermit the frog?
Just heard this rendition of this song on our local radio station... How lucky to have found it on here. Never heard of Sarah McLachlan before..what a find :)
@wickedchild100 I'm one of those duches. And I'm not an emotionless jerk. Just don't like this version very much - kermit's original version, the carpenters' and also willie nelson's versions are better.
my father used to sing this song to me when i was a child, When ever i feel scared or alone I sing this song.I had to suffer through hearing many other artist slander the song by adding unnecessary vocal displays , or trying to "put their own spin on it" before i found this. I have to say, kudos Sarah, you did it right tone for tone, note for note, and you sounded graceful and beautiful singing this old and always favorite of mine and many others who secretly sing this song when they're alone.
She has a voice of an angel, but I have to agree the first time I heard this song was from the simple voice of Jim Henson singing this makes this song so memorable. I know that in my heart that every singer thereafter pays homage and respect to Mr. Henson. It's beautiful in it's simplicity and pulls at your heart strings.
I really enjoyed this version. Of course I always like the Kermit rendition. Who didn't? I always found Karen Carpenters version to be a little "thin".
NOBODY--as good as they are--tops the original, which was Jim Henson as Kermit. Sure, Paul Williams (the composer) did versions, but even he falls to second place to Kermit, because the song was written FOR The Muppets. It became Jim Henson's theme song, since EVERY Muppet special has included it, Jim's funeral OPENED with an instrumental version, and it is to The Muppets (Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Muppet Babies, and Fraggle Rock) what "When You Wish Upon a Star" is to Disney.
this version is okay, but the kermit version is so much better, don't you all agree... the Kermit Version was nominated back in the 70's for best song...
I don't get it. This isn't really a sad song so why does it make me cry. Sarah makes me cry too. Her voice is so angelic, but this is a poor arrangement of this number for her voice. It needs more tempo, and just a simple piano or acoustic guitar. This versin sucks, which is a shame because it's a lovely song and an amazing singer. Fail.
@afrisbeetom: Yes. But as was said, all singers--good & bad--that've sung this seem to do so out of respect for P. Williams as composer & to J. Henson as the man whose Muppet world revolved around the core ideas found in the song (hence why it's considered Henson's signature song, just as his froggy alter-ego laments that "It's Not Easy Being Green" or how Disney forever lives the dream through "When You Wish a Upon a Star" whilst Mickey's title hit is "The Mickey Mouse Club March Alma Mater").
im sorry but as soon as she said "why" at the beginning I asked myself the same question. why am I listening to this crappy cover?

Sarah owns a superb voice, and though I make no judgements about other versions, this one makes my favorites list.

@Brunogirlfriend: Think of the symbolism. Sad or happy, beautiful songs make people cry, it is as simple as that.
