He takes the trouble to explain HTML, and then shows folders with lots of pre created folders and files, controllers and so on, move around bit and bytes of code, and says "here's the Hello World!". He just ruined the concept of "Hello World" where you show how you get from Zero to Hello World, for any other new comer to understand.
This guy needs to stop doing speed and lose his stupid jokes, wtf!
I code other languages so I'm not a moron, and I have no clue wtf is up with Ruby. He makes a lot of mistakes and the video is very blurry so you can't see shit.
This guy confuses "ISP" with "server." When he talks about deploying a ruby app, he says to "upload" the files to your "ISP" and hope your "ISP" is configured correctly for RoR.
How can I build an enterprise application (e.g. for a bank, telco, etc.) with ruby on rails if writing and explaining a hello world program takes more than 1 hour?
Well...if any of u guys need a professional help in understanding Ruby on Rails..pls do contact us ..we provide online training for the same at affordable cost..heres my id.. meghanaitsol [at] gmail [dot] com
@drewnwalker Why don't you just let him make his comments. He is one of few people on this forum who knows what he's talking about. Out of the 71 comments to this video, LAnonHubbard's is one of the few substantive ones. If you don't want to have a serious discussion about technology on a RoR video, then at least others have it, without shutting them up. Thank you.
@DavidRobertRoy. Yes I am a programmer and I am the type of developer who prefers scalable solutions and doesn't listen to the hype.
I've never used COBOL. I mainly use C++ and Java.
For developing a web application that will scale well I wouldn't touch Rails with a bargepole. I would favour a JEE solution that has been written (AND SUPPORTED!) by professionals, not a bunch of amateurs wanting to make a name for themselves while producing a half-hearted and semi-useful solution/framework.
Sorry but i am very fond of the right tool for the job. When making something simple like twitter or a blog then Rails is looking very promising for replacing the rather crude PHP, and Ruby its self is very similar to objective c making the learning curve much less steep when transitioning between real programming and scripting.
And while i would use Java for building a large scale banking system back end i would not use it for the client side application.
@DavidRobertRoy. I agree about the right tool for the right job.
Twitter outgrew Rails and replaced a lot of it with scala. That's one example of what I'm talking about - the lack of scalability in Rails. That's the stuff you DON'T hear from the Rails evangelists and the hype from people with an agenda to push the technology.
If you really want to do knock a webapp up quickly (some scaffolding, etc.), then check out Groovy or Grails. If you want scalability then use Java and Spring.
I think I learned something about RoR from watching this video. Which is interesting considering Alan's diction (trying to fancy-up the word interpret by using interpolate) and his frenetic delivery style. Alan: three recommendations for how to improve your presentation: use try using light text on a dark background, don't talk so much and save the enthusiasm for the two hours from 1:00 to 3:00 when your audience should be taking a siesta instead of sitting in a room trying to learn RoR.
this is a pretty good start. There are a couple things that are out of date that he taught that doesn't apply anymore. This was over two years ago so I guess thats to be expected.
Hey this is awsome.. thanks. But i have a question.. he mentioned to the class something about the online tutorials?? can anyone post those an provide a link? or is that not possible? would be cool to tie it all in.
I think 1 and 3 are related. (he got all Starbucked because he's too busy & thus also cannot afford to be fussy.) For #2, a video system to take a direct feed would have been smart.
I appreciate the information, but I must complain that this is some very poor instruction. Mainly, this is because this guy talks absurdly fast. Does he think that the faster he talks the more intelligent he will appear?

If recording was not designed with a plan to later convert to flash format then quality cannot be as good as you expect or you may have gotten used to. These are goods and bads of youtube. A hello world tutorial shouldnt take an hour ~ the title is misleading
The presenter thinks he's a comedian but just comes off as snobby
Also, he speaks at a million miles an hour and the demos are a bit ad hoc
Can't see the code.

Some advice:
1) less coffeine for the fist guy, more for the second;
2) zoom with the camera or increase fonts size;
3) try code and deployments before the conference;
4) ask the audience to talk through a mic.
Very good videos anyway - thanks Berkeley.
