  • They lecturer speaks a little fast to say the least. Could do with being in HD too but there is enough information to learn something.

  • ruby... sux... >_<

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks!

  • Sick ass tutorial. Building TweetForum 2.0 on rails and needed something like this.

  • A hello world tutorial shouldnt take an hour ~ the title is misleading

The presenter thinks he's a comedian but just comes off as snobby

Also, he speaks at a million miles an hour and the demos are a bit ad hoc

    Can't see the code.

    Eff Emacs.

With that said, I actually did learn something lol

  • 1:15:15 .... nnnnnah!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=u4mcCVtt2RY

  • how many times do u have to same urm and errr shup up !!!

  • Hello World 1:15:15 !!!!!

how long did it take to code twitter?

  • only sound must listen

  • Comment removed

  • This looks like it would be good if I could read the slides. Can it be uploaded again with better quality?

  • Need HD. Can't see the code.

  • @ozkansafak radlab.cs.berkeley.edu/w/upload/9/9a/1_HelloWorld.pdf

  • How do I fill in the survey?

  • LOL I CAN'T READ THE CODE, next time record the video in HD.

  • this is pretty good watch my videos

  • omg a fucking hour to do a hello world >.>

  • Achtung! Developer Conference in Hamburg! Nur noch bis zum 15. April stark vergünstigte Tickets für nur 49,- Euro! - Devon

  • this guy is teaching how to use ruby on crack.... lol

  • clip art makes everyything look like shit. LOL

  • This video has very bad quality of resolution. I can't read the code.

  • To Armando Fox : OK so exactly what is the benefit in you talking with warp 9?? Teaching is not about proving that YOU know your stuff, idiot.

  • Rip the audio from this video at searchripgrab doht cohm.

  • thanks for this

  • For those watching now: With ISP he means 'server'. Also, the views are in .html.erb format nowadays, not .rhtml

  • somebody please explain RoR to me now? no?

    -.-

    ;D

  • @1root ror is Ruby On Rails lol ror lol ror lol ror lorororrolrrorrlolroorlorlorlororororrloororlorlorolorlrorr :D

  • His problem is Emacs

  • LOVE IT!! EXCELENT PRESENTATION!!

  • SLOWWW DOWN lol

  • He takes the trouble to explain HTML, and then shows folders with lots of pre created folders and files, controllers and so on, move around bit and bytes of code, and says "here's the Hello World!". He just ruined the concept of "Hello World" where you show how you get from Zero to Hello World, for any other new comer to understand.

  • @marrecoyt im sry but anyone who doesn't know the concept of hello world.. should not be watching this video.

  • @stompy1208 must be my concept of "Hello world" that's wrong. Who would of known that after 10 years of programming, I had that wrong.

  • he talks too fast

  • This video sucks.

This guy needs to stop doing speed and lose his stupid jokes, wtf!

I code other languages so I'm not a moron, and I have no clue wtf is up with Ruby.

He makes a lot of mistakes and the video is very blurry so you can't see shit.

He reminds me of the geek on Alias.

    Lame.

    Lame.

  • Who doesn't use attributes?

  • @ryanjackson0x Baby Jesus. He just wills an instance variable to change and it does. Now THAT'S meta-programming.

  • "1.3Ghz and it takes that long to open a file"

"Helpful warning about viruses even though I have a Mac"

ffs. this guy is a idiot.

  • "I'm sure I'll get some helpful warning about viruses even though I have a Mac." Seriously UC Berkeley professor? You don't deserve to teach.

  • hey can you add a close caption or subtle to know what is he typing. since it's imposible to know what is he typing.

    thx anyways =D

  • this is pretty cool, but if you can put the writing text in like a CC (close caption) or a subtle it would be nice, since it's imposible to read =D.

  • this is too blurry

  • happy :)

  • This guy confuses "ISP" with "server." When he talks about deploying a ruby app, he says to "upload" the files to your "ISP" and hope your "ISP" is configured correctly for RoR.

  • lol, it takes a mac to 10 seconds to open a txt file?

  • How can I build an enterprise application (e.g. for a bank, telco, etc.) with ruby on rails if writing and explaining a hello world program takes more than 1 hour?

  • This guy needs to install Caffeine on his mac

  • WTF 1 hour just to make a hello world app?

  • 1 hour and 15 minutes video for a "Hello world"?

Oh god, ruby is not for me, then.

    Just kidding, hoho.

  • Cool post. But the presenter should not go into comedy

  • blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..blah..

Too fast dude....I think u r on high speed rails ..

  • LOL, wait thaqts thew vista one rofl!

  • We get it LAnonHubbard, you don't like rails. Stop wasting your breath. Christ, man, it's YouTube.

  • @drewnwalker Why don't you just let him make his comments. He is one of few people on this forum who knows what he's talking about. Out of the 71 comments to this video, LAnonHubbard's is one of the few substantive ones. If you don't want to have a serious discussion about technology on a RoR video, then at least others have it, without shutting them up. Thank you.

  • Very nice video, thx for posting (y)

  • I think that guy got too much caffeine

  • Not a programmer then laddy, or are you one of them that still thinks cobol is still the bee's knees.

  • @DavidRobertRoy. Yes I am a programmer and I am the type of developer who prefers scalable solutions and doesn't listen to the hype.

I've never used COBOL. I mainly use C++ and Java.

For developing a web application that will scale well I wouldn't touch Rails with a bargepole. I would favour a JEE solution that has been written (AND SUPPORTED!) by professionals, not a bunch of amateurs wanting to make a name for themselves while producing a half-hearted and semi-useful solution/framework.

  • Sorry but i am very fond of the right tool for the job. When making something simple like twitter or a blog then Rails is looking very promising for replacing the rather crude PHP, and Ruby its self is very similar to objective c making the learning curve much less steep when transitioning between real programming and scripting.

And while i would use Java for building a large scale banking system back end i would not use it for the client side application.

  • @DavidRobertRoy. I agree about the right tool for the right job.

Twitter outgrew Rails and replaced a lot of it with scala. That's one example of what I'm talking about - the lack of scalability in Rails. That's the stuff you DON'T hear from the Rails evangelists and the hype from people with an agenda to push the technology.

If you really want to do knock a webapp up quickly (some scaffolding, etc.), then check out Groovy or Grails. If you want scalability then use Java and Spring.

  • Dude, slow DOWN! I can't understand shit...

  • well he speak fast , wow , he must have many informations ready to be said

  • I think I learned something about RoR from watching this video. Which is interesting considering Alan's diction (trying to fancy-up the word interpret by using interpolate) and his frenetic delivery style. Alan: three recommendations for how to improve your presentation: use try using light text on a dark background, don't talk so much and save the enthusiasm for the two hours from 1:00 to 3:00 when your audience should be taking a siesta instead of sitting in a room trying to learn RoR.

  • this is a pretty good start. There are a couple things that are out of date that he taught that doesn't apply anymore. This was over two years ago so I guess thats to be expected.

  • The reason this is important... damnit

Is it wrong that's the only thing I got out of this?

  • This guy has wasted my valuable 1 hour. Pretty much for my kids.

  • he has to use crack because there is not enough time to explain this slowly

  • why are we spending an hour 15 on printing out hello world

  • 1/ he uses mac , it tells all ; )

so he can't be trusted ^^

  • This guy is great, but he makes something simple seem overly complicated.

  • es-qu-el not sequel

  • it's either one

  • In the programming world, we say sequel.

    Get your facts straight.

  • works both ways , you can say es-qu-el as well. My bad on the first post.

  • Tu é louco.......ruby é bom d+

  • bamos loco...! que pasa? agan algo complicadooo!

  • was he a radio anchor before working for Berkley? LOL

  • That guy at the beggining is on something...

  • i think he's on crack.

  • Hey this is awsome.. thanks. But i have a question.. he mentioned to the class something about the online tutorials?? can anyone post those an provide a link? or is that not possible? would be cool to tie it all in.

  • thanks for uploading this, I wish I could have attended.

  • Some advice:

    1) less coffeine for the fist guy, more for the second;

    2) zoom with the camera or increase fonts size;

    3) try code and deployments before the conference;

    4) ask the audience to talk through a mic.

Very good videos anyway - thanks Berkeley.

  • I think 1 and 3 are related. (he got all Starbucked because he's too busy & thus also cannot afford to be fussy.) For #2, a video system to take a direct feed would have been smart.

  • i pressed the reply button to enos76 comment, but it didn't post there for some reason uToob!!!

  • i think it takes a little bit to go underneath his comment.. at least that's been my experience when i've replied to people

  • I love ROR!!

  • no veo ni mi....

  • Jajajjaaa..!!

  • My mind is actually pretty blown by how dense his intellectual delivery is.

  • Well put sir ;D

  • Pretty good video I must say. Yes he is fast, but for me it gets ok as time goes by. For those who wanted to take notes - just pause? no?

  • @cdtavijit On the other side of the token, he's not boring.

  • @l80sman104 haha ya. True. I should get you to my lectures then. I speak faster hahahaa!!!

  • worlds longest youtube video!

  • Nope: /watch?v=LBFBQr_xKEM

  • Emacs sucks.

  • vim rocks

  • presenter are talking to fast because he is nervous. He's a researcher not lecturer.

happens to everybody who don't do rarely do public speaking much.

  • Nice excuse, but this is taking place at a top university - there should be someone who can deliver a lecture decently around there somewhere.

  • did you ever think maybe he was talking fast because he was giving an intensive course? Eitherway, he lost me 5 minutes into the presentation.

  • If you ever wanted to know why you should NOT use Emacs for Rails programming, view this video! ;-)

  • It's nice to be able to take notes sometimes, especially when listening to a lecture. I just find the speed in which he talks to be distracting.

  • Talking fast is good for me. I have a difficult time with slow talkers.....what are you trying to write down notes?

  • I appreciate the information, but I must complain that this is some very poor instruction. Mainly, this is because this guy talks absurdly fast. Does he think that the faster he talks the more intelligent he will appear?

  • Armando do you have diarrea? you talke so fast

  • Dude, take a breath. You are talking too fast :(

  • Is there a higher resolution download of this series available from anywhere? The text is proving quite hard to read from time to time.

  • High resolution depends on original recording and the conversion to flash format. If recording was not designed with a plan to later convert to flash format then quality cannot be as good as you expect or you may have gotten used to. These are goods and bads of youtube. Great to post content because flash file size is so small. Terrible for old recordings that were never done with high definition.

  • thank you so much very good work

  • Really nice. Thank you.

  • I agree!!!

  • Awesome series. More like this, please. Good stuff. You can raise my taxes if this is what it's used for.

  • Z200a: why are you making racist comments on other people's vlogs?
