Bigger is definitely not always better, and I think most people prefer quality over quantity. But, $700,000 seems a little excessive unless these homes are close to a walkable place with shops, restaurants, and high-quality transit.
hmmm i dont know what to sat for 700,000.00 dammit i want a 5000 sq ft house i mean the concept is nice but if they want smaller living they need a small price tag those residents are out of their minds smart developer though.. and my garage isnt attatched so i have to walk through the garden soaking wet when its raining i dont think so lol.
The pricing is absolutely terrible. These homes can be built for 50,000-65,000(possibly less given the ability to use second hand material). The point of smaller living and using less land is to conserve resources and be cost efficient. To pay what larger homes are selling for for something half the size is absurd. I better have a McMansion for a pricetag that high.
@dgl1962 Ummmm, not quite. But nice try though. While I won't pay 700 grand for a tiny house, I will build a comfortable, functional house out of quality materials for less than 75 grand, maybe less than 50 if I do most of the labor myself. Consequentially I will have to work less, commute less, stress less, and retire earlier than the McPeople in their formaldehyde debtor's prison. Why take more than you need when you pay for it with your time and health?
@cweld007 A "tiny house" isn't a McMansion, is it?
By the way, all houses, whether large or small must conform to current building codes, so your implication that Mcmansions aren't built to good standards doesn't make sense.
Is there some law that allows builders to avoid building inspections when they build larger homes?
@dgl1962 You are absolutely correct that houses have to meet standards. The standards are set to promote a combination of crap that is mind bogglingly inefficient because by building houses out of far more materials than needed that are built so poorly they cause enormous utility bills creates an entire market people are forced into. Look at passive solar and natural building and try not to trip on your way to the back of the short bus.
@cweld007 I live in south FL, thanks to the many hurricanes that ran through here, the current construction codes are the highest in the nation for roofing trusses, sheathing & windows.
New, large homes (that envious people call McMansions who wish they could afford but cannot) have stronger standards where it matters most, in the roofing & windows to prevent wind breaching through
It's true, we learn all we need to know about people in kindergarten with their envy that masquerades as logic.
@dgl1962 Ok, I see where you had too hard a time keeping up. Large houses are not McMansions. McMansions are shitty large houses. Poor design and construction is the difference between the two. It's like that nasty chick you went to high school with that put too much shit on her face and then said everyone who was laughing at her was "just jealous." Everyone is laughing at your shitty McMansions for the same reason.
@cweld007 "I won't pay 700 grand for a tiny house"
Those are your words that described a "McMansion".
Well, are they large houses or "tiny" houses?
Once again, you've brought in "poor construction" in your last comment, but we already went over the current construction codes & how they apply to larger homes (that bitter children call Mcmansions).
You're all over the place with your babbling, try using less emotions & more thinking, if you do you'll come off as smarter and more rational.
@dgl1962 Man you're getting really desperate grasping at straws now. A McMansion is by definition a large house, I suppose the houses in this video would be McCottages. The problem you seem to be having trouble grasping is that a major critique of them is they are just a jumble of crap thrown together. Do literally any other research on them and you'll find this. Use less emotion? Really? You're the one trying to say anyone who isn't impressed is "just jealous." How pathetic.
@dgl1962 Jumble of crap......as in no style. As in, they look like shit because they're built by people with no taste. Are you retarded? The aspie is strong in you. Read all of everything you've implied. "The only reason anyone could dislike something I have is jealousy!" Yeah, not because it's shit, it's just envy. Really now, even someone of your intellect can't be so unreasonable as to no realize no one is jealous of you. People like different things.
@dgl1962 I'll grant you looking like ass is not limited to McMansions, but apart from shanties, it is the only 'style' of house where 100% of them look like a bag of mashed assholes, because if they had an ounce of class to them they wouldn't be McMansions anymore and they'd be, mansions, estates, whatever classy name you want to call them. You can't even argue that a class of house that is by definition ugly....isn't ugly.
@cweld007 Look, not all larger homes are "Mcmansions".
many of the poeple that I hear using that term are green with envy (including my brother) for not having one and the benefits that go along with them LIKE A PRETTY WIFE!
I understand that smaller homes are better in many ways, lower taxes, etc.
I would be happy living in a trailer, as long as it had a big garage so that I could fix my cars, waverunners & ATV's.
@dgl1962 Then we have come to a point of absolute agreement. A large home is absolutely not a McMansion. I want all the space I need and no more, and I'm not jealous of anyone who chooses to take on all the problems of McMansions.
Don't fool yourself, ANY home no matter what size is a pain in the ass to maintain, it never ends.
In the future, don't think that big, new homes are poorly constructed & should have labels applied to them & try to not denigrate those who have more than you do
@dgl1962 Well, we were in absolute agreement that large houses and McMansions were not synonymous, but here we go again. Not only big new homes are poorly constructed, ALL new homes are. When you look at what we used to build with. Cob and adobe are both fire resistant, cob is earthquake resistant dirt cheap. Progress? I think not. You are also assuming you have more than me. I'm from a farming family with over a thousand acres between us, but I don't feel like having a huge house.
@dgl1962 Don't assume we all want the same things as you or give a shit how big your house is, because I can just as easily claim (with no evidence) you're jealous that I own more property than you, which is a hell of a lot more useful and valuable than your house.
@dgl1962 My reference to McMansions was a response to your "definition" of them in your comment. As in, the houses in this video are tiny and overpriced just like your McMansions are large and ridiculous and I don't want either.
Look we should not be really concerned about McMansions.. The problem is that their design needs improvements and better detailing. Basically, make the exterior inviting and place that garages in the rear accessed by alleys....(similar to the cottages.)
And if a home is 3000+ square feet... MAKE IT LOOK LIKE AN ELEGANT HOUSE.. not a wasteful midscale home with extra rooms....
@Cyrus992 putting lip stick on a "pig" fools only the fools. We don't NEED 3000 sq. ft. homes. If you do though theres pleny out there though. There pretty much throw away junk. All that particle board, formaldehyde, blandness, commuting, ugly sterility. junky debtors prisons.
I understand the problems and the disgust of McMansion housing. Yes I believe we need to take different apporaches. Besides, I have written an article on the papers about it. Believe me, I STRONGLY DISLIKE them!
But agian, It does not mean we should make 3000+ homes entirely extinct
What about those beautiful Neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Queen Anne, Federal, etc.. styled mansions that were built before WWII? We can still build large houses, just not wasteful look and design.
lol at 2:25 she seems depressed since she forked over 700,000 for buying one of these houses when she could just by a normal house for a cheaper price.
@meplayvgalot she looks relaxed in a comfy chair overlooking a beautiful yard and common area. Flowers in bloom, birds chirping. nice.
Being tensed up and "wired" on cafeine in a can, or other drugs, roaring down the road in your suv assault vehicle to go to your particle board/formaldehyde filled 4000 sq. ft. dream, 45 minutes away, isn't "normal" or healthy. but have some steroid and growth hormone filled meat and carbonated beverages, and enjoy. stop at the gas station and bix box junk.
We love our small house. It's just at 1200 sq. ft with a four car garage. We altered the garage to make a studio which we rent out for extra income. Our home is in a resort community and the large homes are not selling right now. People here are finding that living small enlarges your life.
Well, clearly it's only for the upscale, but it's still nice to see something other than McMansions on offer in terms of new development. It's nice to have an uplifting story about housing these days.
Think about all the maintenance fees you'd have to pay every month to keep that garden looking as well as it does.
