One of the Furs greatest (but under-appreciated) songs! In any case it is one of the best on this album. Also, I saw this concert live and it was the best performance that I have ever seen. Richard played EVERYTHING from both this album and their first album!! It was at a dive in Denver , CO. Wow, time flies……………(A constant theme in Richard’s music, see Love Spit Love--for example ).

Deepest Band I've ever known. Even though a lot of critics called them shallow in the 80s, this stuff went way over all their heads. Right up through the 1990s and beyond they have cranked out some of the best work I've ever heard. Both Happy & Sad at the same time, very Light & yet Very Dark sounding music and lyrics. The critics were the shallow ones all those years ago... stuck in their small world of the obvious, never reading the box they judge... and only judging by the covers.
@idavidsawyer hearing THEM LIVE,IS PURE DADA BERLIN,THEY ARE ANCIENT,AND SO BEAUTIFUL,the wailing sax,the T.S.ELLIOT POETRY STYLE,real artists in the sewer of music that is ALL FOR MONEY,AND IDIOT CHILDREN,I DON'T THINK MOST PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD THEM BACK THEN,they combine so many things,AND UNIQUE,THRU AND THRU
Please post the entire album. It's their masterpiece; Entertain me, Mother Son, Wedding, Parade, Should God forget you, I dont mine. Need I say more?!
I had a graveyard radio show at KUCI (UCI Irvine, California). my girlfriend would be in the main studio playing disco.....I was in studio B playing this song over and over and over....
Understand, this album was done right after the CRITICAL MASS episode of M2M, that was so big hair, and all the leather, you would have thought they were Bon Jovi, gone sort of goth. They didnt want to repeat that album , or image for that matter, so this album was so sullen, and back to basic. It was an incredible concert, poppiest song they played was heaven, everything else was the dark stuff. This album has the template for some of the songs on World, but this one was much more sincere, real
I loved the furs first 3 albums, classic stuff. When Vince Ely left I thought they sold out in a big way; the next two albums were a joke. Hate it when a band sells out. Havn't heard this before, not bad, better than the commercial stuff, then again Vince was back...
I thought they sold out for a while with ttt, I thought they did just the opposite around this songs era,.nobody promoted this. I wasn't sure why they went this direction, but it certainly WASN'T commercial. They never had a record of doing what was expected. After all they came from a punk scene.being non typical of that era, they shunned punk to rise above it.a real departure of their home scene, they always did whatever they wished. This hard core effort left them "alone"....
Highwire Days is one of their best! I really love Alice's House as well. I've seen them live about a dozen times over the years and Richard Butler is AMAZING!!!
In 1989 I was 16....i went to a kinda post punk disco called the Nirvana in Lima Peru, besides the main dance court, they had a small dark room...that was the first and last time i heard this song till know....ive been living with this tune in my mind for years and find it randomly trough these......this tune represents the perfect aftermath for the 80s....butler is the best lyricist ever
The passion of this song is so strong. It made the 90s grunge seem shallow by comparison. Most of that music from that time was just all yelling and screaming with no depth. The furs in the 80s and early 90s had heartfelt power!!! Even when he was in Love Spit Love Richard Bulter had that edge that so many bands fell short of.
You are right about the passion in this song. The album Book of Days is often overlooked since it is a little more serious than previous albums. Sadly, none of the songs from this album made it on to their Greatest Hits compilation.
I almost don't mind that it didn't make it onto their Greatest Hits compilation. Book of days was such a powerful and haunting CD that it was set apart from the rest. Richard Bulters haunting voice seemed to bleed out a soul full of mystery pain and wisdom in Book Of Days. It seems to be Uniquely set apart from their other work and yet still very much Psychedelic Furs sounding. It's an underrated gem. He was too far ahead of his time but I feel that people are now comming into it.
Thanks for your comments. I may add other Furs songs like Highwire Days, Midnight to Midnight or even Book of Days. They do rule, and I really like Richard Butlers voice.
the remix for the columbia records sampler theodore is actually a more improved version of this song.

This record has disappeared into the serious archives of Pysch Furs past. It's their most hard core recording, but it is really hot though.

I'd put House in the argument as best Furs song of all-time. Very catchy hooks and lyrics that just nail it.

now the party girls have gone
i hear the rattle of their heels
before their footsteps fade
make promises pay
shame, will shake this house
shame, will shake this house
the passing time is not my life.
i've been counted down
and shouted out.

Couldnt agree more. I think Book of Days is my fave Furs LP after Talk Talk Talk. Very dark & brooding.
I find it a bit of a shame that most folk only really know them for their weaker mid 80's material (Love My Way/Heave/Pretty in Pink etc etc)
