  • I cried when Finnick died. I screamed in the middle of class and everyone thought i was insane. And same with Prim, but i didn't cry, just screamed. My friends don't allow me to read dramatic books in class. Oh well, i still love the books, but i agree with you on basically everything you said <3

  • The epilogue was total bailout for Collins. There was no originality. I felt like I was reading Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows epilogue all over again and that one was unoriginal. As for the deaths, I just have to say that they're in a war. People die in wars. Yes we meet some of the characters who got the axe, but that doesn't mean they deserve a dramatic death. Yes it's sad Prim was killed, but medics get killed in war zones. So as I said before, my thoughts are just different than yours.

  • @53knights Actually, I think I said the exact same thing about the deaths... that war is tragic and that there aren't any expendable people in real life and each person (or in this case, character) is important, whether we are emotionally attached to them or not. Just because someone is heroic and amazing doesn't mean that they are going to pass away in a dramatic way but that doesn't make them any less irreplaceable or their death less sorrowful... and the book reminds us of this.

  • @rosesofsunshine3 Ok, I see what you mean by the pointlessness part. I think I was reading the comments and I heard "pointless death" and just assumed that. My mistake. I guess another difference is that I could actually picture the scenes of Peeta and the tracker jacker venom. I would picture the torture scenes from Hostel (gruesome, I know).

Anyways I'm not trying to hit on you or anything (since I am married) but your youtube name does seem to describe your personality

  • Okay.... My thoughts were just the opposite of what you presented in this video (I'm not saying your wrong, we're on the opposite ends of the spectrum). I don't remember how you compared this to the other two, but I liked this one the least. I thought the war was over-the-top and all over the place; I did not feel like I was in a war at all.

  • haha i know right? i was really understanding what was going on until i went to the part when peeta joined them into the capitol,i was hella confused with all the strategic planning of how they went into the sewer,HOW most of the team died, but i kinda got the jist of it again when she was about to assasinate snow. so yeah,i'd reread the parts again but it was just to confusing for me.

  • @pambuena and yeah i couldnt really picture or envision what they were doing throughout the wartime too.

  • finnick didn't die because he didn't make it up a ladder, he died because he stayed behind so Katniss and Gale and Peeta could live. Finnick was a hero, not just some guy that didn't make it up a ladder.

  • mockingjay sucks!

  • wait, Gale made the bombs that killed Prim? I never really knew who made the bombs wen i read the books

  • i felt like i was in a war too. the book is really emotional and i felt like i was actually in the games with Katniss.

  • I fell sad for finnick because he is married and as a kid

  • I didn't like Mockingjay as much as Hunger Games, and Catching Fire. But I completely agree about Gale and his mindset. I really felt disappointed with Katniss when she agreed to those Hunger Games for Capitol kids. What happened with that? Did that actually happen or not after Coin was killed. That strongly hit my heart in realizing how people can become just as evil even after they have been through so much. I was really happy for Katniss and Peeta in the end. But still was upset at Katniss.

  • @MicMic18 I totally relate to your disappointment with Katniss at that moment...but, maybe I can help you like her again? After I reread that scene a couple times, I concluded that Katniss just said that in order to stop Coin before those morbid plans were re-implemented. If she had said no, Coin would probably have locked her up somewhere. Like this, even the public would wonder why their Mockingjay rose against Coin. Haymitch agreed because he understood Katniss would stop the cycle.

  • @rosesofsunshine3 loved your review by the way I just finished reading the book. Well I have kind of a love/hate relationship with Katniss. She's so negative and untrusting that I have a hard time dealing with but she has endured horrid circumstances so I understand I enjoyed Prim and Peeta reasoning better. So they didn't really have that Capitol Hunger Games did they? And tell me more about why you viewed Coin as crazy? I did know Katniss was gonna shoot her though & wasn't sad bout it either

  • @MicMic18 She had said yes to the 76th Games because that way Coin wouldn't think Katniss would murder her. By saying 'yes, for Prim' I think she meant 'Yes, I'm going to kill you, for Prim'. Which is also why Haymitch said yes, as he saw what she was doing.

  • I think Mockingjay is a brilliant book, regardless of the sadness I still feel after reading it. I don't know, I kind of was rooting for Gale the whole time. Gale was her soul mate, I feel like. But Peeta ... I don't know, I think it's good that they ended up together, but I hate that Gale was not in the picture when the book ended.

  • You're so sweet!

I don't agree with you, I hated Mockingjay, but you look so cute! I just wanna hug you! XD

  • Out of all the books, this one was my least favorite but that doesn't mean it was bad. I just feel like Collins spent a lot of time describing life in district 13. The real drama starts at the very end of the book! There were also so many unanswered questions or questions answered in such a rush way. Gale and Katniss were so close and they didn't even say goodbye when he got the job in district two. Peeta lost his WHOLE family but never thinks anything of it. Those are my only problems with this

  • people were telling me to read the 1st and 2nd only because te 3rd would make ne hate it. But no! u have to finish all 3 books!! mocking jay IS essential to read. it -to me- explains everything after catching fire.. even tho I feel Collins could of spent a little more time explaining details it's still important.

  • Wow! That was an AMAZING review! Loved how you put all the points out into the open!

  • ok, i love the series!! i just got finished with mockingjay yesturday! i loved the ending because ever since i started the series, i was hoping that katniss and peeta would end up together (which they did) (: but the only thing that really bugged me was that gale kinda just left! i wasnt really expecting that to happen at all! i wish that katniss and gale would have stayed friends...

  • I didnt like how prim died . But what botherd me the most was that when katniss shot president coin at the end and gale got a fancy job in district 2 . I dont think gale would just ditch katniss , he loved her and i didnt think he would just leave!!!

  • agreed...i couldnt imagine peeta like that,i was annoyed to find out he went mental..becouse by that time gale started to annoy me just smidge. Also finnicks and prims death was just 2 deaths too much!

  • I completely agree with you on the whole front of never really getting over a character death even though the story keeps on going. For me, unfotunately, I was too hung up on Cinna's death to really enjoy Mockingjay the first read-through. I had read CF when it came out and I had a HUGE wait for MJ... and while everyone was "What happened to Peeta?" I was "What happened to my Cinna?! He can't die! He can't!" He died bravely, though... Cinna, you will always be remembered...

  • I must say that yours is the best review I've watched. Your opinions pretty much match how I felt. In regards to Finnick's death, though I felt this was a waste of life, and therefore and unnecessary character to kill off, the introduction of Annie and Finnick's child brought a slight bit of hope. Though it's awful he doesn't live to see his child, at least a part of him still remains. Also he didn't die in vain, he died fighting for a better life for his child. Such a small but important part.

  • I definitely agree with you about Finnick's death. I felt like after Catching Fire and after all the effort Suzanne Collins made on his character development, that his death was a) totally unnecessary and b) completely passed over. Finnick deserved more than that.

  • @aukluk Yes... and I still can't tell whether her writing it that way was a stylistic folly or quite brilliant. The abruptness was likely on purpose in order to shock the readers and demonstrate the horrors of war. It definitely made me think about how every character/person is important and that there aren't any "unimportant" casualties. This could also be me reading more into than was intended so it's always interesting to read other people's impressions... RIP, Finnick!

  • @rosesofsunshine3 if you look at it from a wide view, finnicks death was kind of the beginning of the end. he died, then katniss realized that most of the solders died, prim died, part of katniss herself died, coin died (I cheered), and i think our/katniss's gale died to. i was so convinced that gale wasnt capable of killing those children that i read it wrong...i just realized that he knew what those bombs were gonna do. and the fact that they came down in parachutes...Gail died for me.

  • However, I don't think that Katniss had to be with Gale or Peeta. As strong as she is, I felt that she would be completely fine being alone.

  • @phampants hmmm, interesting. I would agree with you if the Hunger Games trilogy had never happened but I think that with Prim dead, her mom far away & most of her friends already dead or gone, she would have sunk into a very dark place, perhaps especially because she has such a strong personality. Needing others isn't a form of weakness but I think she may have perceived it as such and therefor isolated herself. Peeta &Katniss were committed to each other and I think that's important (cont...)

  • @phampants That's why I like that the love story in this book was one of commitment to love not just about the emotional "passion" of falling in love. One of my friends laughed at me when I said that "situational variables need to be congruent" plus commitment for a relationship to work, but I think it's true. Call it fate, divine intervention, or just plain chance. Peeta needed someone too. His family and friends were gone too. I also think they just complimented each other really well!

  • The Hunger Games series reminds me of 1984 meets Survivor with a dash of Animal Farm.

The reason why I didn't like Mockingjay as much is the amount of politics involved. I'm from Chicago, I deal with enough politics. :)

I agree that Peeta was a better person, but I feel like he's a hopeless romantic. Whereas Gale, I found him more human. Mankind isn't perfect and Gale is far from perfect. Yes, what Gale did isn't right and human life isn't expendable, but we're human. We make mistakes

  • @phampants Iol, you're right, mankind definitely isn't perfect! Neither was Gale:) Despite my critical reaction to him in this book, I actually did like him (& Beetee) but wish there had been a scene where Gale recognized the folly of the mindset. I think Beetee did when he voted against the second Games. Interestingly, even tho Katniss was annoying sometimes, I think I liked her for the same reasons you like Gale!

  • @phampants I've never read Orwell...think I'm going to buy those two books now! Do you recommend them?

haha, yeah, I don't really like politics either;) The ideas behind them though are a different story=P

  • "Hunger Games" is a book series? I saw "games" in the video title and got all excited expecting some kind of Video Game review lol. Well, glad you enjoyed the books none the less lol :).

  • @Balgore8 haha... thanks... and yeah, I didn't initially know what it was about either! the title doesn't really explain a lot

  • "Hunger Games" is a book series? I saw "games" in the video title and got all excited expecting some kind of Video Game review lol. Well, glad you enjoyed the books none the less lol :).

  • I agree with you.. and peeta was the better choice for katniss...they i think where half of each other.. wish cinna would have lived .. i like that katniss didnt know how to act in every situations, that made her more real... great review...

  • @BUFFYTHESLAYER007 yeah, I totally concur... Katniss' indecisiveness really did make her feel more human and helped us mere mortal readers identify with the story better;)
