so you can't use anything faster than 5400rpm? -_- also, does the screw HAVE to be put back in because I kinda f'd mine up. I have YLOD on my original 80gb, so I am going to take the drive out and break my GT5 Collector's Edition free. I can't do the eject trick, because it's not compatible with that model.
i had a ps3 40gb but the hard drive was different, it would slide to the side and then out... Then i got a new ps3 cuz the old one broke and this new one is also 40gb but it has a hardrive that slides out like the one in the vid. ARE they different??
my blue screw just wont get out! it seems like it's broken since it can turn both directions easy. what i mean is that i can turn right without using powers or anything and that i can turn left for hours without it going out ... help?
@purifiedbws wow i searched and there is!!! sorry for wrong information;(, but never thought that there is 7200rpm in 2.5inch!!!!!!! gonna buy it lolz
guys I need help I forgot my ps3 account password but that's not the real problem "I can't get it back" what I want to know is If I backed up data to other HDDs will I still keep my account and trophies ?
hey my old 40gb ps3 broke im about to get a slim what would happen if i switch hdd right away saved the game saves to my ps3 and put the other hdd back in?

@iluvbigbootie No you need an external HDD, you back up or the files from you old HDD onto it. Then put your new HDD in the PS3 and then plug the external HDD back in and restore the files from it back onto your new HDD.
so from my understanding when you put the new hard drive into the system and start it up for the first time you still need to have the external drive connected to get the system update on to the new hard drive and then it formats after that, then after that you keep the external conneted to restore games settings and data?
what's the purpose to upgrade the HDD? just more space for game data? more games? because I usually flipp the games I play on the hareest difficulty to get platinum trophies then delete the game data. I constantly got 67gigs on mine. does the bigger HDD give better performance of the ps3?
Some People Do More Than Play Games On The Ps3 I Have Lots Of Movies Pics & Music So 80 Gb Is Not Enough 4 Me I Have A 500 Gb 7200 Rpm 16 Mb Cache Hdd B/c Ps3
i just have 3 questions. How much roughly would the 500gb HDD cost?, what's the best company to go with? and have u had any problems with the upgrade so far?
I bought alot of games from PlayStation Store And I Already Downloaded it to 5 other ps3's...i dont want to have to buy it again, so if i backup the ps3, will it save the games aswell?
i did everything by step and when i restarted my system after restoring my back up data the screen went black now all i get is a blue screen on my tv F*CK
This is completely safe. In the PS3 manual there are instructions on how to do this. the PS3 was designed to be able to upgrade. as far as screwdrivers a small philips will do all the screws. I have 2 PS3's I have Mine that I got on the launch day and the one in the video is the newer model PS3 that is my sons which we got about 9 mos ago.
np. i have one question tho. i have read that it doesent matter if its 5400 or 7200 rpm i know that 7200 doesent make abig diff on the ps3 but will it affect the ps3 or data?
7200 rpm will spin faster which in turn causes more heat. so if you play the system longer you run a slight risk of an overheating issue unless you have it vented or a fan on it. nothing serious. that is the only difference
so it will save all of my ps3 data? even the saved games that cannot be copied to usb devices? how about if i have more then one users do i have to go into that user and make a backup for each or is there one for all?
I have the same one that is in this video. I found chabnging the hard drive very easy. I got the 320gb one,,, did it all to the book and when turning the PSS on it comes up with the screen .. conect your Ps3 controller.. i do that and then the next screen is the requirement to press start/select together and then the ps3 searches but it does not find the flashdrive i downloaded the v2.70 firware on. help help.
you need to go on your pc and downlod the updat and save it on a USB Kingston DataTraveler and put it in your ps3 then it will be abel to update the ps3 afther thad you can restor your back up friles

yo man idk much about my ps3 i just got the MF but my my buddy said i could put a 1 terabyte HD thats 1000 gigs is that possible and could i change my ps3 HD with a sixty gig playstation get back at me about that dude
Man.. I think your instructions are well described. Because NONE of the other ones tell you that the new ps3 needs firmware update files! I freakin got stuck and panicked for a bit. Until I realized I could download the firmware update on a Flashdrive. haha Thanks for your help!
Ok question, does it HAVE to be a PS3 that doesn't play the PS2 games or does that matter? I got the MGS4/PS3 bundle pack...does that make any difference? I just want to make sure it'll STILL play my PS2 games if I do this upgrade in the future...
It doesnt matter the HDD is just storage and does not affect the OS or backwards compatability. look in the PS3 manual and it has instructions on how to upgrade your PS3 HDD they built it to be able to upgrade.
That blue screw was not that easy for me. I had to use needle nose grips to unscrew it because I stripped it with those same exact yellow tools on this video. I took the hdd to Lowes to they could unscrew it casue I really did not want to strip those screws. After that everything was easy.
wow thats unusual. I did not use the jeweler screwdrivers for the blue screw though, I used a larger philips head. but other than that you would have been fine the rest of the way.
No not a memory stick they dont hold enough, an external drive, most PS3'2 have several gigs of info to back pu. when you buy an external drive you can choose the format when first installed to a PC. or you can reformat it choosing the FAT32 format.
the new hard drive has to be formated in the PS3, Total time to swap mine was with backing up 20Gbs of info and reload was 90 mins total. 30 ot back up, 30 to format and install the system and then 30 to reload the HDD. not bad at all
If you want to back up the data on your current hard drive in your PS3 then you will need a seperate external USB hard drive formatted in the FAT32. the external is not the new drive. you only need to do this if you want your saved games and such. If it is a NEW PS3 then you can bypass this step.
hmm. ok. i got it. yes, i do have the new PS3 80gb. the same model that is in the video. I am trying to upgrade my PS3 also. This video is very helpful. Thank you
When you perform the system back-up this will save all your personal data, saved games etc. after you swap your HDD you will perform a back-up restore. this transfers all the data from the old to the new HDD
My hard drive slot is a lot bigger than that why?

the new hard drive has to be formated in the PS3, Total time to swap mine was with backing up 20Gbs of info and reload was 90 mins total. 30 ot back up, 30 to format and install the system and then 30 to reload the HDD. not bad at all

what is the external hard drive that he talks about in the beginning?
where the blue screen says: "First you will need an external hard drive to back up your existing HDD...."
what is that? a flash drive? or the new 500gb hard drive he had?

If you want to back up the data on your current hard drive in your PS3 then you will need a seperate external USB hard drive formatted in the FAT32. the external is not the new drive. you only need to do this if you want your saved games and such. If it is a NEW PS3 then you can bypass this step.

how to send saved games from the old hard drive to thr new hard drive
murder312 3 years ago
When you perform the system back-up this will save all your personal data, saved games etc. after you swap your HDD you will perform a back-up restore. this transfers all the data from the old to the new HDD
