  • My fav band after the Jam...still got all their singles and album...even the export issue...wonder if thats worth a few bob?

  • best mod band ever

  • Yeah...The Chords forever !

    South London

    South London

    South Londoooon

Whooooooa better start the re-wiring job on me scoot !!!

  • what a blast from the past !

we are the mods !! im off to live a childhood dream .. gonna get me a scooter

    top class post mate

  • The Chords did reform briefly, was too young first time round but was lucky enough to see them play at the IOW (when it was still a Mod rally) in the 90's, well worth the 12 hour scooter ride from Scotland.

  • CLASSIC!!

  • Brilliant, makes an old mod happy.

  • classic.the chords should have been a bigger band

  • memebers of the chords playing 229 club in london on friday! long live the POPE

  • Turgid, forced...the only thing i can say in it's favour is the song's jerky energy and enthusiasm. A poor man's (The) Jam.

  • THE PLEASERS X

  • My favourite song by The Chords; a Mod Revival classic!

  • Has anyone got video or audio copy of a song called Turn Away Again - had it on single but seem to have lost it - loved that tune - cheers

  • Saw them live at Loch Lomand i 1980 with the Jam and couldn't help thinking they were the better band. (And the drummer was wearing a kilt)

  • despite my love of some fantastic tunes by the chords for people to even mention them in the same breadth of the JAM is fucking laughable. the Jam will always be no 1. great song tho'

  • Chris Pope may have been the brains of The Chords but Billy Hassett was the Heart ad Soul of the band. Love watching this video!

    Long Live The Mods!

  • Secret Affair pIay The AssembIy, Ieamington Spa, JuIy 18th, 2009.

  • the chords, they were the band for me in my mod days, brilliant.them and the purple hearts were the best from the mod scene, other fav bands from period were long tall shorty, small hours, the fixations.

  • These mod revival groups were all 4th-rate Jam copy-cats who were 1st-rate Who/Small Faces copy-cats. Too much copy-catting for me.

  • Jam rip off merchants

  • Great band! wow! I live in Phoenix AZ and have never seen the Chords on any form of video.. the best mod revival band.. ever along with Squire and the Jam! Thanks for posting...

  • Secret Affair pIay The Camden Centre, Kings X, May 30th - The Chords, when wiII this great band reform?

  • Secret Affair pIay The Camden Centre, Kings X, May 30th - The Chords, when wIII this great band reform?

  • That sounds great. What an excellent song. I haven't heard it in years, but I still love it. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Gotta love The Chords

  • WOW! I used to listen to these guys all the time. All their singles are amazing and it's so cool to finally see footage of them.

    Deepest thanks from Canada!

  • how can you compare any band to the jam.if you actually saw them live from77 82 then youl know why.the best band ever.

  • miles better than secret affair but never as good as the jam.

  • saw them at the mod reunion in camden 1999 , ,i was of my bloody head ,then the chords came on ,and they were fucking amazing,,met them afterwards ,gave me one of there cd's at the time ,just fanastic band in 1979 ,so underated

  • the new mod revival has began a great scottish mod band called modus have signed to sony there is a couple of videos on my page in my favourites if anyone wants a listen or check out their website think its the modus

  • The best of 79 next to Secret Affair.

  • No Sir! The Purple Hearts were absolutly the best.

  • purple hearts are pretty good too mate

  • Secret Affair for ever.....

  • The best single of '79.

This was so much better than The Jam at the time and Secret Affair..

  • keep taking the medication mate.

    best single of 79?

yeah u like them that much u dont even know when it was out.

very very average. and thats being kind.

  • The Jam had released 4 albums by then!?!

This is very fine song, but weller wrote albums and albums of them from 1977 onwards!!!

  • Billy Hassett sounds like he's singing live. Brilliant voice.. better than Weller in my opinon.

  • Bloody great !!!

  • Classic tune, bang bang, bang bang, bang bang YOURE DEAD

  • What a great song!

The Chords should have done so much better but why on earth did they sign to Polydor, the home of The Jam? They were always going to be kept down, what a shame.

Anyone going to Secret Affair @ The Camden Centre,, May 30th, 2009?

  • underated band

  • Real shame The Chords haven't reformed.

Anyone going to see Secret Affair @ The Camden Centre on May 30th?

  • Look for a group called 'Pope' - Buddy Ascott and Chris Pope, are still doing the rounds and sounding better that ever!

  • good group but not a patch on the jam or secret affair ...

  • The Chords / Jam who's better debate could go on forever. It's like comparing The Who & The Small Faces, both great bands but both different. At the time of the early 80's my favourite mod band was Secret Affair, but saw them at Isle of Wight scooter rally in August, and i'm sorry to say but they were shite, Ian Page didn't seem to what to be there, was as if he was just going through the motions. But all the bands of the mod revival have their place in British cult music history.

  • Don't disect it to death. The Jam were a top band, different class! The chords were doing their own thing. Different & indivdual. Enjoy them both for what they were. Top fucking English bands!!

    Keep it going.

  • mods mods mods mods mods

  • Utter genius.

  • Top stuff, luv this song - about time they reformed. In the meantime I'm going to Secret Affair @ The Camden Centre, Kings X, May 30th 2009, anyone else going?

  • the chords fucking rule...shut the fuck up fashion creeps....and fuck off.

  • Can't be bothered to read all the comments on the Jam/Chords debate but this is as good if not better than anything the Jam released.

  • I'm not mods.

    However, I understand.

    Therefore, I keeps listening.

This sentence was translated on the English translation site in Japan.

    I'm sorry by poor English.

  • The chords were a decent Mod band but to class them above the Jam is ridiculous...I'd even say Secret Affair as the Mod Revivals second best ahead of the Chords but hey that's just ma opinion.

  • Cheers to the old school mod punk revival! The Chords are my favorites besides the Jam! Thanks for posting this!

  • "So far away "is one my favourite albums and has been for probably more than 20 years. Not sure if its re-ssued buti downloaded it off of mininova to save my album getting humped. It's as relavent today as it was 28 years ago, check out the drumming, Buddy Ascot is a legend. They also have some cracking b-sides to their singles

  • It has been reissued on the captain mod label, It can be bought through their captain oi website.

  • I don't care what anyone else thinks on here, i fucking like them and thats that.

  • The Chords album 'so far away' is far superior to any studio album ever recorded by the jam. Paul Weller couldnt and still cant sing for toffee.Without the who there would have been no Jam, without the jam there still would have been the chords!

  • The Chords should reform, if Secret Affair can sell out the Astoria (last sat) and are playing Hammersmith Apollo, Dec 22nd then The Chords could do good business too...

  • Yeah but its not the original line up!Saw them at the Scala and Birmingham they where brilliant.Dont want SA to turn into a cabaret act!

  • "Fucking Joke" as much as i didn't mind the Clash it just got me with the Reggae thing what the Fuck was that about leave that too the likes of Johnny Osbourne John Holt and all those other great reggae and Dancehall Greats, the Chords in my eyes were one of the Best Revival Bands you could see around that time

  • Get you 1559godhead Did you ever get too see the Chords live?...I see you you like the Clash? White Middle class Joe Strummer trying to do the best he could to emulate working class rebellion.

  • 1559godhead....The Chords may not have been in the same league as the Jam, but this is a classic song!

  • little wankers with no real talent posing in the shadow of the jam

  • If you actually hear the vinyl version (loud) it knocks any Jam song into a cocked hat. And I know & like the Jam.

  • I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Weller himself declared this song "the best anthem to come out of the mod revival".

  • Joss,

Love the Chords, but they signed to the same label and producer as The Jam, fatal error! Polydor were never going to break the band, they were doing the classic 'sign up the competion and crush 'em' routine.

    Joss, are you gay?

What makes a fake mod by the way?

Where do buy your underwear you stupid little prick.

Can't wait for Secret Affair @ The Astoria on sept 13th - sold out so I hear, not bad for fake mods (& recorded for a live double album to boot by a USA label).

    You arse.

  • Why dont you post your own opinion instead of critisising others.

If you want a fight you can have one you stupid little cunt

  • twotonetonic, the only thing thats gay on this thread is you shit for brains. Dont insult my friends. Dont know much about mod but I know this sounds shit

  • real not fake mod

  • Nice Kev...Know exactly what you mean. I was a mod before the casuals came in and ruined it. I got laughed at by idiots with bubble perms...but quality never dies. Mod music and style has always been here...on the underground where it should be.

  • forgot how much i idolised buddy ascott, chris pope etc. can't see there being another british movement like modernism etc as everyone nowadays wants to be famous, pretend to be some black american gangster(i am not racist, hope it doesn't come out as if i am)or sponge off the state, rather than stick two fingers up at everyone that wants to down them, and actually better themselves>F**k me , i sound like my old man!!

  • how cool is that then! The Chords!! Thanks for that great blast from the past. They were my fave band back in the 80's. Listening to them now makes me understand why, THEY ARE JUST FANTASTIC!!! So many bands today try to copy what they mastered back in the 80's, but will never get even close to what they did.

  • 'just discovered this band.. I love this song!

    Bring back the Mods!

  • oh very funny !your ignorance is typical of the punks we regularly faced brainless twats . the only true punk eh ? well wot made you look up the chords in the first place ? maybe you just cant spell the lurkers eh ?

  • Jojo the dodo. Hahahaha...Mods are wankers! Hahahaha...this is fun. I hate Vespas too. Hahahaha...oh, but I do love Television Personalities. Thank god they weren't mods...hahahaha

  • When were the Jam called the Chords???Fucking mods...hahahaha

  • The Jam were never called The Chords. I think you might be getting a bit confused.

  • I meant to say the Lambrettas or Purple Hearts, but got really confused as you said...darn it. "This is the modern world...."

  • actually charleshanaman said "confused" not me !

I prefer lambrettas over vespas and i actually like the tv personalities . You are out to wind up someone who prob has a far wider taste and collection of music and a far greater vocabulary than yourself . "If you know your history ,then you will know where your coming from" As I said ,the ignorance we faced started way back in the school yard and it seems you are still there with your bag of glue and yor snotty mates . well mentally anyway .bye

  • I truly doubt that you have a "far wider taste and collection of music". The only thing I know for sure is you are a punter...that is all.

  • whatever !. Nice one though that you came back with a semi intelligent comment and not your normal sneering ,mocking and anglo saxon . live and let live mate . love the saints ramones ,slf ,too . HAVE A NICE DAY Y`ALL

  • the chords were fantastic . in my street and british way of life are anthems . pope and hasset were great songwriters . saw "pope " in brighton supporting the cabaret act "the gift " with a v sheepish Buckler who didnt like me asking what he thought he was up to! "scared scared people with their lives all torn !" ace bloody ace !

  • wow! great to see this! reminds me of the old days that will never die!

  • listened to these guy's for 28 years and still love it

  • One of rocks great riffs intro's - love it love it - also The Starjets check them out

  • This is great!

However, I was just wondering why everyone who likes them who posts a comment on here has to use the word "f*cking"? Is this a hard mod thing?!

  • save the f word for gordon, this is real nostalgia, still got the vinyl

  • The Chords are F#CKING amazing.

  • fucking excellent always preferred them to the jam ( only just mind )

  • Great stuff, takes me back a few years.

Anyone remember Tuesday nights at the Royal Oak, Tooley Street or Friday nights at the Crystal Palace Hotel? Those were the days!!

  • Blimey you are even older than me...my eldest sister used to go to The Royal Oak in Tooley Street and she knew all of the Chords as they were brothers/cousins of her mates. She used to make the little chords badges. Ahh memories of Bermondsey and seeing Billy Hasset in his stripey blazer.

  • tops

  • You know how some songs make you miss the past? This isn't one of those songs.

  • Bloody brilliant brings it all back!

  • Everyone going to see SECRET AFFAIR @ The Isle of Wight Scooter Rally, August 22nd & The Astoria 2, Sept 13th?

  • takes me back-fucking quality!!!!times were good then.

  • classic stuff! fucking great band, brings back memories

  • Keep the faith, 40+ married bloke with two little kids Never saw the Chords live but was lucky enough to see Jam, Secret Affair, etc will be at Astoria gig with a few other devotees

  • perkiss!

    I Am 17 =) And I Love It =)

I Am A Mod (Or As Mod As I Can Be In This Current World Of Hip-Hop And Hoodies)

=D There Are Quite A Lot Of Us That Like The Whole Mod Way Of Life etc =)

    Stay In Style!

  • Superb song - full of energy and controlled agression. I absolutely love it.

  • I grew up with Billy Hasset and Martin Mason. My neighbour used to go our with Billy and Martin's sister was my sisters best friend. My sister used to go and see then before they broke into the 'big time' and has their records and she also helped Martin's sister Andrea make the official badges......Pity that Martin has had some tragedy in his life the past few years but good to see them on here.

  • YE IM 14 :)

  • 19ufo47 :) Thank's.

Does any teenagers or any one under the age of 15 like this?!

  • Such a great band!

This is the British way of life!

  • Chris Pope & Brett Ascott are now Pope & currently working on their 2nd album. Mick Talbot joined them in the studios. Pope often slip in the odd Chords track live. I uploaded a few Pope vids (click on my name) also quite a few From The Jam live tracks I've recorded too.

While we're on the subject of the 79 revival - Secret Affair are back together & tickets are onsale for The Astoria 2 in September & Purple Hearts - Simon and Gary are now in RT3 - tracks from them are in my videos too!

  • quality song-remember doing the pogo in my living room to this.got their singles somewhere.where are they now??

  • Sort of sounds like four or five Jam songs rolled into one!

  • STFU go buy it!...the only reason i am saying this is because the drummer, Bret is my dad!

    i found this out yesterday.

My name is Frank Perkiss :D

  • that makes feel old, the chords deserved more at least on a par with the jam.

  • Definitely not on a par with the Jam, the Jam were INNOVATERS. Nevertheless a good band though, takes me back a few years.

  • Great band... Where could I find a free mp3 of this song? Anyone knows? Thanks

  • saw the chords supporting the jam and were superb, brings back great memorys, as weller said once a mod always a mod

  • A classic band. They had so many great songs. 'So Far Away' was one of the best albums ever.

  • top band , i was a mod in london at the time and powerpopfan i agree opening up top track

  • Thanks for posting this.

Reminds me of my teenage years back in the 80`s.

This song is a classic from that era

  • MOD RULESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

My Best Band are JAM, SECRET AFFAIR, SMALL WORLD, KILLERMETERS

The song I like the best: SX225!!!!!!

  • Excellent..Still gves me goose bumps and the hairs on the neck stick up, where has ALL my life gone ?

  • I know what you mean, time sure flys. But Hey, my old Vespa's just itchin' to get to the IOW this summer.

  • Ha! IOW I went there one Summer in 1988 I think it was. Me and my girlfriend were the first on, clad in denim and leather on my Suzuki GS550 with King and Queen seat. And I aint joking at least a hundred or more scooters came on board and surrounded us! And when we got to the Island it was swarming with them! I didn't know anything about it!

  • i love this album, i dont know if anyone remembers, but "happy families" was in the kroq rotation in the early 80's..

  • Luv them! I wasn't born yet when this stuff was out but at least my mum was a mod back then & still loves all the music & she got me into it too

  • Rogan71 Yes i remember the circles!Billy is one of my all time favourite tracks. The Merton Parkas where never trying to be a supergroup of 20yrs standing!plastic smile, put me in the picture, flat 19 all great tunes.

  • The Chords LP was pretty good. The Merton Parkas were cod R&B... Shame there's no videos from bands like The Moment, The Scene, Direct Hits (maybe)....and more from The Prisoners....Does anyone remember The Circles ?

  • YAY!!!!! someone mentioned direct hits!!!!!house of secrets! aw , and the prisoners!!!!

the music was better than the people.. mods can be so narrow minded !

  • The Circles were an awesome band too, my fave is "Opening Up."

  • mertonparka you are a sensitive little soul.

  • Most of the '79/80 Mods were bored punks anyway with very little connection to the origainal movement. many of the songs hold up well in both genres.

  • I see the punks turned mods are out of the woodwork. Its just a shame you havent got the brains to make a constructive comment instead of swearing! but i suppose thats your punk roots shining through!

  • merton parka your talking through your fucking arse.the merton parkas were shite as well.

  • Without the Who there would have been no Jam. Without the Jam there still would have been the Chords! The Jam where the band for little kids with targets on their backs. The Chords where the band for those who new where it was at!

  • my fave band from the revival, still sound good today, should of been bigger,i never saw them live, should reform and tour lancashire !

  • class tune we are the mods!

  • now lets make one thing clear! This is the real deal! pure class! put the jam to shame! awesome!

  • the Jam kicks arse over this

  • Brought back great memo of great times of the mod seen !

  • Saw them at the 100 club in the 90's, great memories..

  • as good as the jam, weller was a big fan, i was lucky to see them, great posting thanks

  • a sad revival.

  • We are the Mods Takes me back Great stuff !

  • Fucking brilliant band!

  • bloody great, what else can you say about this fantastic band

  • WE ARE THE MODS!!

  • Billy Hasset Where are you Now ? The Chords Mod revivals finest band, classic songwriting, underated but not forgotten hey :-)

  • great to hear the boys again,i was one of the members of the chords official fan club back in79. i never got to see you live as a youngster and am gunna travel down from chester to see the gig at the barfly in october. U still sound as good as ever , guess u never thought it would start again like this

  • Top Notch band - 1 of their best!!

  • Nearest thing to the jam. love it.

  • So, what is the original album worth? I bought it the week it came out. Preferred Secret Affair at the time.

  • ThnaX a lot and respect for posting The Chords ! I'm a big MOD fan, The Jam, Secret Affair, Purple Hearts, Killermeters. I've never ever seen a "Chords" video before so this means a lot to me. Mods forever.

  • Always been one of my favorite toons there sound is awesome,Chris Pope is a great guitarist felt like I had my ears chainsawed off after seeing them with Kip fronting must a been 81?

  • yes, yes, yes awesome!

  • we are the mods! we are the mods!

  • ahhhh anotherr fantastic song by the chords... mods rock!! wahooo!! martins a lengend!! so are chris, buddy & billy also... ive met them all.. they all rock ... so do their kids!

  • they are in a band called pope, seen them at tenby scooter rally last year

  • WoW! Interesting to see this turn up! I followed this band in the 80's they were really something live. The split weren't their fault Polydor pulled the rug from under them to concentrate on The Jam. I know it gutted the band. Buddy & Chris are still upto something today though!

  • Fantastic, Love 'em!

  • i'm in the usa, i was into this group around 1980, i thought their final 45 "turn away again" was a real step ahead, too bad they called it a day soon after.
