I bought this record in February 1980 and Promptly turned Mod ...thank you Billy and the boys for an introduction that led me into a wonderful world of music and fashion !
The Chords did reform briefly, was too young first time round but was lucky enough to see them play at the IOW (when it was still a Mod rally) in the 90's, well worth the 12 hour scooter ride from Scotland.
despite my love of some fantastic tunes by the chords for people to even mention them in the same breadth of the JAM is fucking laughable. the Jam will always be no 1. great song tho'
the chords, they were the band for me in my mod days, brilliant.them and the purple hearts were the best from the mod scene, other fav bands from period were long tall shorty, small hours, the fixations.
Great band! wow! I live in Phoenix AZ and have never seen the Chords on any form of video.. the best mod revival band.. ever along with Squire and the Jam! Thanks for posting...
saw them at the mod reunion in camden 1999 , ,i was of my bloody head ,then the chords came on ,and they were fucking amazing,,met them afterwards ,gave me one of there cd's at the time ,just fanastic band in 1979 ,so underated
the new mod revival has began a great scottish mod band called modus have signed to sony there is a couple of videos on my page in my favourites if anyone wants a listen or check out their website think its the modus
The Chords should have done so much better but why on earth did they sign to Polydor, the home of The Jam? They were always going to be kept down, what a shame.
Anyone going to Secret Affair @ The Camden Centre,, May 30th, 2009?
The Chords / Jam who's better debate could go on forever. It's like comparing The Who & The Small Faces, both great bands but both different. At the time of the early 80's my favourite mod band was Secret Affair, but saw them at Isle of Wight scooter rally in August, and i'm sorry to say but they were shite, Ian Page didn't seem to what to be there, was as if he was just going through the motions. But all the bands of the mod revival have their place in British cult music history.
Don't disect it to death. The Jam were a top band, different class! The chords were doing their own thing. Different & indivdual. Enjoy them both for what they were. Top fucking English bands!!
Top stuff, luv this song - about time they reformed. In the meantime I'm going to Secret Affair @ The Camden Centre, Kings X, May 30th 2009, anyone else going?
The chords were a decent Mod band but to class them above the Jam is ridiculous...I'd even say Secret Affair as the Mod Revivals second best ahead of the Chords but hey that's just ma opinion.
"So far away "is one my favourite albums and has been for probably more than 20 years. Not sure if its re-ssued buti downloaded it off of mininova to save my album getting humped. It's as relavent today as it was 28 years ago, check out the drumming, Buddy Ascot is a legend. They also have some cracking b-sides to their singles
The Chords album 'so far away' is far superior to any studio album ever recorded by the jam. Paul Weller couldnt and still cant sing for toffee.Without the who there would have been no Jam, without the jam there still would have been the chords!
The Chords should reform, if Secret Affair can sell out the Astoria (last sat) and are playing Hammersmith Apollo, Dec 22nd then The Chords could do good business too...
"Fucking Joke" as much as i didn't mind the Clash it just got me with the Reggae thing what the Fuck was that about leave that too the likes of Johnny Osbourne John Holt and all those other great reggae and Dancehall Greats, the Chords in my eyes were one of the Best Revival Bands you could see around that time
Get you 1559godhead Did you ever get too see the Chords live?...I see you you like the Clash? White Middle class Joe Strummer trying to do the best he could to emulate working class rebellion.
Love the Chords, but they signed to the same label and producer as The Jam, fatal error! Polydor were never going to break the band, they were doing the classic 'sign up the competion and crush 'em' routine.
Joss, are you gay?
What makes a fake mod by the way?

forgot how much i idolised buddy ascott, chris pope etc. can't see there being another british movement like modernism etc as everyone nowadays wants to be famous, pretend to be some black american gangster(i am not racist, hope it doesn't come out as if i am)or sponge off the state, rather than stick two fingers up at everyone that wants to down them, and actually better themselves>F**k me , i sound like my old man!!

So many bands today try to copy what they mastered back in the 80's, but will never get even close to what they did.
oh very funny !your ignorance is typical of the punks we regularly faced brainless twats . the only true punk eh ? well wot made you look up the chords in the first place ? maybe you just cant spell the lurkers eh ?

You are out to wind up someone who prob has a far wider taste and collection of music and a far greater vocabulary than yourself . "If you know your history ,then you will know where your coming from" As I said ,the ignorance we faced started way back in the school yard and it seems you are still there with your bag of glue and yor snotty mates . well mentally anyway .bye

the chords were fantastic . in my street and british way of life are anthems . pope and hasset were great songwriters . saw "pope " in brighton supporting the cabaret act "the gift " with a v sheepish Buckler who didnt like me asking what he thought he was up to! "scared scared people with their lives all torn !" ace bloody ace !
Blimey you are even older than me...my eldest sister used to go to The Royal Oak in Tooley Street and she knew all of the Chords as they were brothers/cousins of her mates. She used to make the little chords badges. Ahh memories of Bermondsey and seeing Billy Hasset in his stripey blazer.
Keep the faith, 40+ married bloke with two little kids Never saw the Chords live but was lucky enough to see Jam, Secret Affair, etc will be at Astoria gig with a few other devotees
I grew up with Billy Hasset and Martin Mason. My neighbour used to go our with Billy and Martin's sister was my sisters best friend. My sister used to go and see then before they broke into the 'big time' and has their records and she also helped Martin's sister Andrea make the official badges......Pity that Martin has had some tragedy in his life the past few years but good to see them on here.

Chris Pope & Brett Ascott are now Pope & currently working on their 2nd album. Mick Talbot joined them in the studios. Pope often slip in the odd Chords track live. I uploaded a few Pope vids (click on my name) also quite a few From The Jam live tracks I've recorded too.
While we're on the subject of the 79 revival - Secret Affair are back together & tickets are onsale for The Astoria 2 in September & Purple Hearts - Simon and Gary are now in RT3 - tracks from them are in my videos too!
Ha! IOW I went there one Summer in 1988 I think it was. Me and my girlfriend were the first on, clad in denim and leather on my Suzuki GS550 with King and Queen seat. And I aint joking at least a hundred or more scooters came on board and surrounded us! And when we got to the Island it was swarming with them! I didn't know anything about it!
Rogan71 Yes i remember the circles!Billy is one of my all time favourite tracks. The Merton Parkas where never trying to be a supergroup of 20yrs standing!plastic smile, put me in the picture, flat 19 all great tunes.
The Chords LP was pretty good. The Merton Parkas were cod R&B... Shame there's no videos from bands like The Moment, The Scene, Direct Hits (maybe)....and more from The Prisoners....Does anyone remember The Circles ?
I see the punks turned mods are out of the woodwork. Its just a shame you havent got the brains to make a constructive comment instead of swearing! but i suppose thats your punk roots shining through!
Without the Who there would have been no Jam. Without the Jam there still would have been the Chords! The Jam where the band for little kids with targets on their backs. The Chords where the band for those who new where it was at!
great to hear the boys again,i was one of the members of the chords official fan club back in79. i never got to see you live as a youngster and am gunna travel down from chester to see the gig at the barfly in october. U still sound as good as ever , guess u never thought it would start again like this
ThnaX a lot and respect for posting The Chords ! I'm a big MOD fan, The Jam, Secret Affair, Purple Hearts, Killermeters. I've never ever seen a "Chords" video before so this means a lot to me. Mods forever.
Always been one of my favorite toons there sound is awesome,Chris Pope is a great guitarist felt like I had my ears chainsawed off after seeing them with Kip fronting must a been 81?
ahhhh anotherr fantastic song by the chords... mods rock!! wahooo!! martins a lengend!! so are chris, buddy & billy also... ive met them all.. they all rock ... so do their kids!
WoW! Interesting to see this turn up! I followed this band in the 80's they were really something live. The split weren't their fault Polydor pulled the rug from under them to concentrate on The Jam. I know it gutted the band. Buddy & Chris are still upto something today though!
i'm in the usa, i was into this group around 1980, i thought their final 45 "turn away again" was a real step ahead, too bad they called it a day soon after.

While we're on the subject of the 79 revival - Secret Affair are back together & tickets are onsale for The Astoria 2 in September & Purple Hearts - Simon and Gary are now in RT3 - tracks from them are in my videos too!

that makes feel old, the chords deserved more at least on a par with the jam.
rubber238 4 years ago
Definitely not on a par with the Jam, the Jam were INNOVATERS. Nevertheless a good band though, takes me back a few years.

I know what you mean, time sure flys. But Hey, my old Vespa's just itchin' to get to the IOW this summer.
wolverine37x 4 years ago

The Merton Parkas where never trying to be a supergroup of 20yrs standing!plastic smile, put me in the picture, flat 19 all great tunes.
mertonparka 4 years ago
The Chords LP was pretty good. The Merton Parkas were cod R&B... Shame there's no videos from bands like The Moment, The Scene, Direct Hits (maybe)....and more from The Prisoners....Does anyone remember The Circles ?
rogan71 4 years ago
YAY!!!!! someone mentioned direct hits!!!!!house of secrets! aw , and the prisoners!!!!
the music was better than the people.. mods can be so narrow minded !
PHAEDRIDER 4 years ago
The Circles were an awesome band too, my fave is "Opening Up."

mertonparka you are a sensitive little soul.
allmodcons1965 4 years ago
Most of the '79/80 Mods were bored punks anyway with very little connection to the origainal movement. many of the songs hold up well in both genres.
fulltimepunk 4 years ago
I see the punks turned mods are out of the woodwork. Its just a shame you havent got the brains to make a constructive comment instead of swearing! but i suppose thats your punk roots shining through!
mertonparka 4 years ago
merton parka your talking through your fucking arse.the merton parkas were shite as well.
allmodcons1965 4 years ago
Without the Who there would have been no Jam. Without the Jam there still would have been the Chords! The Jam where the band for little kids with targets on their backs. The Chords where the band for those who new where it was at!
mertonparka 4 years ago
my fave band from the revival, still sound good today, should of been bigger,i never saw them live, should reform and tour lancashire !
