  • the part of the razor...legend

  • GOOD (form & content)

  • i read salvador dali in the opening credits around 00: 52

  • The whole point of this movie is it is supposed to be like a 'dream state.' Your dreams are all out of order and don't really mean anything when put together. Randomness. Think 1929 version of Inception I guess....lol

  • @BigFatFailureTurtle Though I agree that this film's narrative is at least analogous with the oft-incomprehensible quality of dreams, I don't know that your comparison to Inception is valid; after all, Inception exploits the phenomenon of lucid dreaming!

  • @rqbuchanan Lol, it was just a joke. Just a comparison that people who don't understand or study early film, especially film of the 20's avant-garde era, can relate to. Lol, I agree they are nothing alike

  • @rqbuchanan

Agreed, Inception is like a slap to the face of Bunuel, Dali, Deren, and Lynch! It's okay though, I personally hate Inception but like how it's at least trying to bring smarter audiences to the theater.

  • @depelated To be honest, I don't really perceive any relation of mode or narrative linking Nolan's film to Dada, Deren's independent postwar experimentation or Lynch's merger of Hitchcockian formalism and irrational surrealism.

Nolan drew inspiration from many sources; my guess is that his script was superficially influenced by Christopher Priest's terrific "A Dream of Wessex."

  • @rqbuchanan

Oh I understand, I just think Nolan adds too much logic to the idea of dreaming. It's a preference anyway if you are a sucker for films like Mulholland Dr. and Meshes in which the state of dream could be implied for the main protagonists of the film. That is interesting though, A Dream of Wessex as the inspiration for Inception, not to mention that the entire mythic structure of the film is essentially a direct copy of King Minas and the Minotaur.

  • @depelated As much as I enjoyed both, I agree that the vivid, imaginative and relatable dream-puzzle of "Mulholland" is more appealing than "Inception's" tech-driven, ordered, expository variant, especially as Lynch prefers to leave at least a few loose (albeit peripheral) ends afray for the fun of interpretation.

I've not read the legend of Daedalus' labyrinth in years, but I can't believe I didn't infer such an obvious correlation. Thank you!

  • @rqbuchanan Nolan himself said that his biggest inspiration was the animated Kon Satoshi film "Paprika", which bears more than a little similarity to Inception.

  • @MiniKirk I wasn't aware of that; thank you. Actually, Paprika is on my long list of features to see, and all of my recent anime viewings have been Ghibli productions. I'll check it out soon...

  • @BigFatFailureTurtle

That's a common misconception, the film actually falls under the Dada movement. Although it is morphologically similar to a Surreal film, the film's intention is to make sure you can't rationalize anything in anyway, even subconsciously, as in a Surrealist or Trance film.

  • Fuck this shit. I'm gonna watch Ghostbusters.

  • @2deeley

    Dumbass Motherfucker.

  • does he actually slit her eye or what

  • @SLiPKnoT19891 No, I studied this film a bit at college, they use a cows eyeball. It does look very realistic though.

  • WTF I've just watched?

  • is this the real music?

  • really?? feel the Pixies love guys!

  • y asi nacio la cirugia ocular depues fue avansando

  • @gatheringleaves; I don't think you're meant to 'get it'. The point, if there is one, is how you feel about it as an individual.

  • oh, btw, the two stars in this film BOTH committed suicide (true story).

  • Comment removed

  • dafuq did i just watched.....

  • Since now, I never got the opportunity to watch this masterpiece! Personally i prefer Max Ernst in the "surrealistic scene", but thank you so much for this!! It's GREAT. @gatheringleaves - surrealism is not to get it, i think it's more about to loose control and let your thoughts out, whatever it is- and than such things happens.

  • What is the whole point of this short film, I dont get it

  • @gatheringleaves Navigate to 1:45 and view the ensuing twenty seconds twice or thrice.

  • @gatheringleaves I see it as a representation and dissection of dreams, not necessarily something tangiable or "real" - the scenes are too tenuously linked

  • @gatheringleaves That's the point, it hasn't logic at all... Dalí and Buñuel decided to do a shortfilm based on whatever they found shocking. The original idea came out of a dream that Buñuel had related to the cutting eye scene. Buñuel used to laugh of those people who used to try to found some logic out of this short.

  • @gatheringleaves Its a sureal movie. If you don't get it, means it's not for you.

  • @gatheringleaves Our film teacher just said don't even bother trying to "interpret" it.

Its surrealism. Trying to search for a point may not always be the best thing.

  • @Blacksquirrel014

    Correction. Dada.

  • Way better than Bambi.

  • @Shanktorsion who the fuck is bambi ?

  • i would like to say that to those of you who don't see Dali's themes in this, you probably don't understand his themes and where they are coming from. Underlying sexual innuendos and the obvious sexuality is a HUGE Dali theme. Not to mention life and death mixed into one, as well as the symbolism of eyes, ants, and the way each woman is portrayed in this film. I could go on forever...

  • this film has been presented at david bowies world tour 1976!

  • This is required viewing for anyone getting into filmmaking and especially people taking a film class ( as I cannot afford it, I am doing a self taught film class using the Internet and old filmschool text book bought at secondhand/recycled book stores)

  • @Soc245 look up indymogul and BFX ( Backyard Effects) on YouTube as a great place to get started.

  • 13:31....Will Arnett??

  • What happens in the film? Is there a narrative? How does the film represent time and space?

  • whats the opening song?

  • My good sir, I must say that I have just experienced the cultural experience known as WTF.

  • @wildcatnate I feel exactly the same way...

  • @wildcatnate

That's exactly what Dada is. It is WTF without explanation.

  • I'm gone nuts since after watching this. AIOSdjowiaqdjoisdhcòoadushvòsaio'Dshuoa

  • @CANIMALEDETTI EAT NO KUMQUATS

  • Top quality... Thx for sharin' culture !!

  • Oh and a man will put the weight of religion, two priests, two pianos and two dead cows on his back for one woman.

  • This is my first surrealist film. It was awesome. I've also seen eraserhead. I wanna make some myself, that are decently short. I would like nothing more. Does anyone know any more like this or no? And how does one use the special effect of fake blood? any website on movie effects would be much appreciated.

  • @Soc245 You'll get as much strange fun out of any of Buster Keaton's comedy masterpieii from ca. 1920-28...!

  • @Soc245

Check out stuff by Stan Brakhage, Kenneth Anger, Yoko Ono, Maya Deren, and Man Ray. It's safe to say that all those people have influenced David Lynch in some way. If you haven't seen David Lynch, see his films ASAP (he is probably the best film director of our time).

  • One of my favorites, I give Bunuel most of the credit on this one though. All of his themes from futures films are all present here. About Dali, I don't see many of his themes in here.

  • @sundaywiththegiants All lust and post-Catholic sentiment presented herein are of a purely Dalían mode.

  • I watched this movie at Madrid, last year at an exhibition on the surrealism. It made me feel all sort of things for about 15 minutes. It's magnificent. Thanck you so much, rqbuchanan.

  • There's a lot going on here....

  • Slicin' up eyeballs! I want you to know!

    Any contemporary stuff like this?

  • @adrastea Don't know about you, BUT I--

Oh, there are plenty of avant-garde short films shot from the twenties to the present that I could upload. Expect more soon.

  • @adrastea anything by Jodorowsky will be surely surreal enough for you. Check ouy "El Topo", "The Holy Mountain", and "Fando y Lis". Also ".L'etoile De Mer" by Man Ray is pretty surreal.

  • @adrastea David Lynch is the way to go.

  • @adrastea So how many people look up this film because of the Pixies?

  • @totalphilistine well believe it or not, I'm actually a bigger fan of rqbuchanan's videos than The Pixies. but i agree probably most, Debaser is one hell of a song. Also Dali stays relevant IMO. cheers

  • @adrastea Charles gives gifts which perpetually give.
