That walmart machete is thinner than other machetes--Ontario, Tramontina, Imacasa, etc. The Martindale I have has about a 21" blade and is fairly thick, though it tapers towards the tip. That blade does *not* flex; I don't know what it would take to cause it to flex.
Colhane has some videos up about the modifications he makes to his machete blades, similar to what you were describing here.
Pinch grip is slightly different from what you were demonstrating there.
Any opinion on the Cold Steel machete series? Theyre a bit cheaper and comes in a 1055 steel and are available in a bunch of different styles. The handle and sheath is mediocre on them though
I think ill get this as im in a constant state of paranoia that we will run out of oil in our lifetime and end up living in the woods like homeless rednecks no offense, if you come across anymore survival gadgets let me know =)
Hey Fred. I liked the review. I just wanted to say that machetes tend to have that wide bottom to give you extra leverage during your swing. As you swing you are supposed to crank your wrist toward what you are trying to cut right before the blade makes contact. My weed eater died so I've been using a machete to tame my lawn lately and found this tip really useful.
Bear Grylls has a very entertaining show. Some stuff is a little impractical for me to try and replicate, but it sure is fun to watch him do! Nice vid, very useful info!
Fred, great review as usual. I have a couple questions though.
1. Can the BG machete fit deeper into the sheath? It looks like the velcro strap is supposed to go over the handle to secure it. If it will not go deeper, that is a poor design.
2. Have you ever reviewed the Ka-Bar Kukri Machete? I have that one and I think you would be impressed with it too.
I really enjoy your channel and all your reviews. Keep em coming.
i hate gerber mystery steel that thing might be strong and not bend but if im guessing correctly it will be extreamly brittle and will likely chip if you hit a board with nails and i mean chip badly
Thanks. Great review. Just ordered mine after your review. I was leaning toward the Gerber machete, but your review made me get this one. Thanks again.
The BG Parang is definitely better quality than that generic Coleman-type machete. The only problem I have is that I absolutely HATE Bear Grylls! His show is all scripted and nearly everyone prefers his show over Survivorman. It's a neat knife, but Gerber should have sponsored someone else, like Les Stroud. Someone who is actually a survival guru!
Cold steel makes some nice machetes you can pick them up on ebay for nothing, they dont come with a real good edge though but a cheep draw through sharpener does a good job on them.
@cheeselyman What will you be using it for? I would not chop anything laying on the ground with the Kukri. Looks like it would excel at cutting through hanging vines and thick weeds.
@cheeselyman I own the Ka-Bar Kukri and it is a very solid machete. I have taken it camping a few times and it is an excellent chopper. It came razor sharp out of the box and holds a great edge.
This BG parang interests me too though. I might get one to do a side by side comparison. Until then, I know my Ka-Bar won't let me down.
@VBlackadder If you get both please do a video, I would love to see the comparison. You may just convince me to buy that Kukri, I'm alreay a Ka-Bar fan!!!
poorly planned sheath, it looks like it could come loose and cut you unintentionally, not a bad blade but you can buy a tramontinia machete for $7 and after 14 years it still works very well
@fredhart yeah, they are made in brazil, they are as common as chefs burgers, cheap and sturdy. i keep one by magnet on the fridge by the back door, it will take an arm off easily
you know...Ive seen this parang and was curious about it...in fact, I think I saw it at Dick's. Get this...I went there last week to pick up my new Henry Survival Rifle...lol. I had to go get one after I saw your review! It's awesome. When I was picking it up, the store associate, another customer, and myself had to stand around and admire the design...compactness/lightness/quick assembly/takedown. It was the belle of the ball...lol. Thanks for another great vid Fred!!!

Nice review, Fred, going by your opinion and the two reviews you linked to, this BG parang is a real keeper compared to the Walmart machete. :-)

Funny how it's just the opposite for me, I've watched most of BG's shows but I don't own a single item of the BG merchandise.

@monkeyslaye Bear is a survival Guru, but he does the more extreme survival, as in, being placed infront of extreme situations.
Les Stroud, does the more realistic approach in a more realistic situation.
There not really comparable. I like watching them both, but Bear Grylls brings a bit more thrill to the game.
