it depends, as a rapper/emcee, yea id say if you wanna really be respected by many, you gotta be able to push boundaries in all directions. Eminem, nas or Immortal Tech. is proof of rappers whose done well at many different directions in rap.
But as a musical artist, you dont have to say shit. You can make tracks like 2pacs Cant C me which has a handful of punches, but the majority of the tracks is just him saying hes got money, hoes, guns and killing niggaz.
Either punchlines or the truth. Something people can relate to, or enjoy listening to. From the UK, punchlines=Rhyme Asylum & message=Lowkey, search for them on youtube and check them out. Anyway I'm not a proper rapper like most people commenting probably are, I occasionally write bars and sometimes record but I'm mainly talking from the viewpoint of a listener.
He doesn't have to be anything hommie. You are what you are. My question is what is a punchline really? I think its just a really clever line. I mean if you can put in punchlines with "deep" rhymes that right there is a crazy mc.
you dont NEED punchlines but thats what most ppl focus on now so i guess you do lol idk good question bro. you do need punchlines at time tho. you cant just spit 100 bars no punchlines, that ish is boring to listen to. lol xD
i feel like rappers that are too reliant on punchlines dont do so well..look at all the battle rappers...they got the best punchlines but cant make an album for shit little alone a good song...punchlines can be good but too much can skewer a song..i believe more metaphors are needed but that doesnt mean they have to be punchlines
i feel like the punch lines are what get the crowd these days. thats what there looking for like lil wayne he got a hole bunch of puch lines and thats what gets the people like you hear what he said.
I respect both types of emcees, me personally dont use punchlines to often but i feel peeps can still relate to what im saying...I do enjoy hearing a good punchline...
but if u just spitting bars, then u gotta have some punchlines. the game is looking terrible as it is wit these mediocre rappers, we dont need anymore. i say if u can't rap dont do it. rap aint for everybody. thats just my opinion
Punchlines to me, spice up the verse. Like the dunking contest, nobody wants to see a boring ass dunk, u gotta do something to get the peoples attention. a plain boring ass rap just aint gonna do it. if u gon play in this sport then i feel u need to bring it. especially when everybody raps. it also depends on the song u doin, Storytelling & Serious Songs dont need punchlines. but its good to throw em in there sometime. But if ur not a punchline rapper, u not a punchline rapper, Step Ya Bars Up
i agree with mel...the most important thing is basically to not be boring. originality and overall entertainment value can be achieved with or without punchlines.
i think that a good writer should have punch lines, a punch line can be a climax of a song... trust me straight lyrics is legit like mos def, talib...but people like that rap for a cause you know, trying to make changes through their lyrics, because they know people will pay attention regardless, a punchline artist may need that punch line to keep the attention of a listener, or throw it in and go hard on the whole jam, it doesnt matter the circumstance taste in rap, there will always be 2 sides
I don't think so, but then my music doesn't usually come down to that... In disses and in freesyles and stuff punchlines are great but for what I do it usually wouldn't make sense to use a punchline. Not a bad question though. Punchlines are cool.

Honestly i'm not even sure what a punchline is "exactly" But think a rapper doesn't have to have punchlines always

Exactly...they're too over-done these days.
Give me a few SICK ones...and not a whole track of mediocre, hit and miss pussy punchlines.
But a true rapper should always have a FEW punchlines, metaphors and wordplays in their arsenal.
