  • Our male whiteface does the exact same thing. It's because they've reached sexual maturity, he has toys, plenty of attention and even more out-of-cage time. This is NORMAL, I've even consulted with a parrot behaviour analyst

You could try getting him/her a mate, but even then he'll probably jump ontop of her and just whistle/play without actually mating :P

(It appears as though they "forget" how to mate after being hand-reared, especially if they're aviary raised)

  • Although it is completely normal for a cockatiel to do this (even females do it), I agree with the last person who commented. I have no doubt in my mind that your cockatiel gets plenty of outside of the cage time and attention, but he still needs toys to stimulate his mind and give him something to do while he is in the cage. Most cockatiels like things that they can shred. Both of my boys love the pinatas sold at most pet stores. Hope that helps =)

  • I understand why you say so when seeing the whole video presenting only one thing in the cage. However, please try not to quote out of context, since it is not everything about his life. Though I put "routine", it's just a very little part during a day. As ohter birds beloved by their owners, this guy has toys and many things to play with, which are not in the cage. Actually, he doesn't like us to put objects in his cage, the place he likes to rest in. Instead, he takes it as an offense.

  • Well you certainly seem to know and love your cockatiel very much, and that is always a good thing to see! Both of my cockatiels would probably lose their minds with out toys, but hey, each one is different with their own preferences. Thank you for taking good care of your bird. There are so many who don't understand how much care birds really need!

  • there is nothing else to do in this empty cage... it's like a prison with not toys, no friends...

  • I know, but he is not always in the cage. It happens at night, when people are cooking, or nobody is home.

  • Hi i am thinking about getting a cockatiel. But i need advice, tips, help. I have done hours and hours of research. I have found a store that sells birds that have were born and handfeed there. With nice cheep cages. it would be nice if you could comment on Cockatiel HELP.

  • Well, I know it's hard when the whole thing is all about masturbation, but please try not to quote out of context. It's not everything about his life, and he has toys and love from the family.
