How long do the V Belts last running on the flat flywheel? Don't they tend to roll over, or is there a V groove I can't see. Nice engine, I think you went the right way with your 3000 RPM generator, the higher rotation speed acts as a larger flywheel, improving the speed governing, a 4 pole or 6 pole alternator running at slower RPMs would possibly given you a pulsating voltage effect as the engine fired.

Can some one explain to me how the RPM is regulated on these old machines. I mean I know there was some kind of a centrifugal device that kept the RPM sort of constant. But was that good enough to keep the frequency constant(ish)?
@ListerA28 It's not the generator part that run at any rpm. It's the engine running at a single, different RPM (ie: not variable... let's say change from 1000rpm to 650rpm). Here's the trick... different pulleys. You simply change the genset pulley to one that will keep it rotating at the correct speed for the new engine RPM you want. There are tons of aftermarket pulleys for the listers or gensets that will allow this.
the lister hand start is a skill to get right love the lister engines and the sound is a great also the lister engine were ahead of their time and still a great engine today just like seagull outboard engine bomb proof also thank you for this video a lister fan in ireland sean dolan
great generator, now only a good muffler that makes the generator a lot quieter.

It is indeed regulated by a centrifugal device in one of the flywheels.
It surprised me how constant it stayed under changing load conditions.
This is a industrial type of engine, and has heavy flywheels, so the inertia also contributes to that.
The generator I use is a 2 pole /3000rpm one.
Best would be an 8 pole /750rpm generator to keep the frequency or voltage even more constant.
Supposedly there are generators that can run on any rpm, but I haven't figured that out yet.

it really is a skill handstarting one of these :-)
later I learned to use the momentum of the flywheels to get it started. thx for the stars :-)
