My perspective on Piss Christ is that submerging the crucifix in urine does not denigrate Jesus, but humanizes him. The dehumanization of anyone, whether turning someone into a god or a maggot, makes them unrelatable. It is the inability to relate to someone as a fellow human being that makes that person easier to denigrate or harm, and more difficult to empathize with or love. I can relate to an imperfect flesh and blood and piss Jesus. I cannot relate to some perfect and untainted entity.

You see it as cheap souvenirs, but for many others, a rosary or a plastic Jesus night light is a comforting reminder of their faith, whether you bought it from a jeweler or a 711. Sister Wendy handled all of Bill Moyer's questions with such grace and sophistication. I was at times very frustrated at some of his questions, which were, in my point of view, in very bad taste.
I certainly would not have had the patience she had, as he seemed to be asking questions not in an impartial way, but was actually quite opinionated.
She was fantastic in the interview without doubt. Though I wonder if it was because of her insight and annunciation that Bill felt he could ask more challenging questions. I submit that if Sister Wendy wasn't so expert, that he may have backed off to avoid pinning her back to the wall. 3:36 Bill sits back in his chair smiling at her genius, and a few seconds later totally accepts her argument. I think he has a lot of respect for her.
You do have a point there. I agree that it could very well have been that reason for him to ask challenging questions. He may be asking questions that the majority of people are actually thinking but too afraid to ask.
However, I still can't help to feel frustrated, listening to him at times. It was the same when he interviewed Joseph Campbell too.

I agree. He's good, but not an amazing interviewer. He has a slightly condescending bedside manner, and his questions toe the line. Michael Parkinson is probably my favorite interviewer as he is able to use his charm to ask questions most of us wouldn't dare, but generally without the interviewee taking offense.
In any case, Sister Wendy was took Bill's questions in her stride, and I found her answers fascinating.

It's not called Piss Jesus. In December 1999 Andreas Serrano's Piss Christ sold for $162 000.00. The price has since gone up considerably. It's one of the highest paid photos in a US auction. I don't think you understand the cultural and religious weight behind the Piss Christ photo. It goes beyond your immature comprehension of art.
Oh, just because people are willing to shell out a bunch of money for it doesn't necessarily make it important. I look at this, and I see a bunch of people getting all upset over a photograph of what in my opinion is art that didn't take any effort to make. The whole situation just says to me, "I want attention! Pay attention to this." And I think that's just kind of dumb.
Serrano isn't trying to drum up attention for himself. Piss Christ was an articulate attempt to sum up the lack of religious faith in the late 80's. Serrano pushed the boundaries of what was considered tasteful and the back lash from Jesse Helms and the conservative party was anything but casual. This is what real art does, it fires up the emotions and it brings you front and center of what people believe in.
I really like her opinion. Serrano wasn't trying to insult the crucifix in the vat of urine he placed it in, he was trying to send a message. I'm glad that a religious person actually got this message or a positive interpretation of this artwork!

She is so inspiring, witty, insightful, honest, and unpretentious. What an art critic! And what a refreshing presence to encounter nowadays. I always feel enriched after listening to what she has to say.
They don't have freedom of speech. They have the promise of freedom of speech, but it is frequently denied. I don't know what you mean by "don't have freedom of thought," but your mind is something you can explore without anyone knowing or interfering. Bringing those thoughts into action and speech brings about the barriers of our culture.
I like that she puts the responsibility on Serrano as much as Jesse Helms - a great, or even good, artist isn't so simple to react to.
By her definition, Norman Rockwell's work is comforting while American Gothic is probably not. And it's the artist behind the brush that makes the difference.

Would I trust Serrano or a nun? I'd take Serrano - the things nuns have done in the past make the Piss Christ look like Mickey Mouse. Jesus was a megalomaniac. Morality is morality - Jesus was not a moral man. Serrano is a towering genius of our age.
I'm an atheist and I tend to be rather disdainful of Christianity; Wendy was recommended to me for a laugh by an atheist friend; but I have to say, having watched this video - this woman gets it.
Yes, enlightenment thru contemplation on art does not have to be about following a particular religion. At its core, every good spiritual practice is about being present. That she has used art to facilitate this is what I love best about her.

If you want to look at the material aspects of Piss Christ, look at all the material. The image isn't anti-religious; it's anti-commodification of religious heritage. Putting Jesus on a roadside billboard is pissing on Christ. Joel Osteen preaching that Jesus wants us to be materially happy is pissing on Christ.

You see it as cheap souvenirs, but for many others, a rosary or a plastic Jesus night light is a comforting reminder of their faith, whether you bought it from a jeweler or a 711. It makes no sense that God would object to objectifying religion, when the Church going back to when Christ walked this earth placed so much importance on objects, for example the holy communion. The crucifix is a physical reminder of Christ's mortality.

I believe that one can look at "Piss Christ" and see a perfect metaphor for the sacrifice of God. Jesus, God, immerses himself in the muck and mire of human life in order to share his grace with people.
Am I the only one who sees this possible meaning?
And I am not suggesting this is intentional on the artist's part, but the work itself does suggest this nobler interpretation if you think about it. It is a visually beautiful image if you allow yourself to look.

She is probably more open minded than most nuns, but that isn't saying much.
Ultimately, she is using her own interpretation of Andre Serrano's work to advocate her own simple minded and dogmatic faith in Jesus' alleged sacrifice.
At least she is advocating freedom of expression, but that is overshadowed by her insistence that we bow the knee to morbid fairly tales, and her simplistic explanation of Serrano's photograph sounds like an advertisement for the Catholic Church.

Sister Wendy handled all of Bill Moyer's questions with such grace and sophistication. I was at times very frustrated at some of his questions, which were, in my point of view, in very bad taste.
I certainly would not have had the patience she had, as he seemed to be asking questions not in an impartial way, but was actually quite opinionated.

She was fantastic in the interview without doubt. Though I wonder if it was because of her insight and annunciation that Bill felt he could ask more challenging questions. I submit that if Sister Wendy wasn't so expert, that he may have backed off to avoid pinning her back to the wall. 3:36 Bill sits back in his chair smiling at her genius, and a few seconds later totally accepts her argument. I think he has a lot of respect for her.

You do have a point there. I agree that it could very well have been that reason for him to ask challenging questions. He may be asking questions that the majority of people are actually thinking but too afraid to ask.
However, I still can't help to feel frustrated, listening to him at times. It was the same when he interviewed Joseph Campbell too.
But you're right, he certainly does give insightful interviews.

I agree. He's good, but not an amazing interviewer. He has a slightly condescending bedside manner, and his questions toe the line. Michael Parkinson is probably my favorite interviewer as he is able to use his charm to ask questions most of us wouldn't dare, but generally without the interviewee taking offense.
In any case, Sister Wendy was took Bill's questions in her stride, and I found her answers fascinating.

It's not called Piss Jesus. In December 1999 Andreas Serrano's Piss Christ sold for $162 000.00. The price has since gone up considerably. It's one of the highest paid photos in a US auction. I don't think you understand the cultural and religious weight behind the Piss Christ photo. It goes beyond your immature comprehension of art.

I look at this, and I see a bunch of people getting all upset over a photograph of what in my opinion is art that didn't take any effort to make. Serrano isn't trying to drum up attention for himself. Piss Christ was an articulate attempt to sum up the lack of religious faith in the late 80's. Serrano pushed the boundaries of what was considered tasteful and the back lash from Jesse Helms and the conservative party was anything but casual. This is what real art does, it fires up the emotions and it brings you front and center of what people believe in.

Logically, you have to either compare nuns to artists or Sister Wendy to Serrano.
If you want to compare professions, artists have been known to do some pretty awful things, too (Caravaggio, for example),
while plenty of nuns have nursed the sick and helped the poor.
I trust people after getting to know them enough to see they're worthy of trust, regardless of what they do for a living.

These people wait until they see someone else's ideas float and then heap it on themselves like they discovered it. Its more important to build their position than to recognize the originator. This way they look like the sensitive and seeing ones.

Christ was only a man. If he inspired all the religious wars for centuries then he was no better than Hitler. Hitler, however never seemed to have as many contradictions in his policies as the Bible evidences.
Religions are not "faiths". They are absolute, untenable superstitions.

There's a difference, my friend, between having people use your name long after you're dead to justify wars you were never a party to and actually sending them to war yourself.
Jesus, even if only a man, was a hell of a lot better than Hitler. He was his opposite in fact, because he despised prejudice against other ethnic groups.

I was actually offended at first sight of Piss Christ, but that's just me. It looked like the work of some pretentious asshole who wants to stick it to all Catholics, but I could be wrong

I've lived just half an hour outside SECCA (the Winston-Salem, North Carolina, foundation that granted Piss Christ an award)... and find it very ironic that NC Senator Jesse Helms, referenced in this clip, denounced SECCA for its support of Piss Christ and the subsequent $15,000 grant awarded to it...
If nothing else, it just goes to show our stereotypes of (nuns, southerners, etc)... are very unwarranted and we need to be open about people just as Suster Wendy states we must be about art.
