  • Threatened death, thievery and destruction of an artist and his piece to protect an idol, a statue, which the Bible strictly forbids. Any supposed Christian who stole, destroyed, threatened death to protect a statue will go to hell. Remember your commandments. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth. DO NOT WORSHIP PAINTINGS OR STATUES!

  • @amayagab who's worshipping them? get a grip lunatic

  • @loggats You pray in front of them, adress them when you speak to your lord, that is worshiping them. Also, God said not to paint or make sculptured of him or anything in the heavens. It's a sin.

  • @amayagab LMAO!

  • If all Catholics were like Sister Wendy, the world would be a lot different today.

  • I'm not Catholic but I love Sister Wendy. She always has such gentle and deep insights - and she's got ton's of character.

  • hahaha "not a very gifted young man, but he's trying his best." XDD

  • My perspective on Piss Christ is that submerging the crucifix in urine does not denigrate Jesus, but humanizes him. The dehumanization of anyone, whether turning someone into a god or a maggot, makes them unrelatable. It is the inability to relate to someone as a fellow human being that makes that person easier to denigrate or harm, and more difficult to empathize with or love. I can relate to an imperfect flesh and blood and piss Jesus. I cannot relate to some perfect and untainted entity.

  • @urbancavewoman Beautiful interpretation! Thanks for your intellectual perspective...unlike amayagab over there LOL

  • piss christ? wtf is that shit. fuck this. this chick is terrible

  • @PlatniumProductions you obviously do not understand what she is saying, were you even listening? she is giving a critique of the work called "piss christ."

  • @PlatniumProductions

please watch the vid before you make a knee jerk reaction and say something stupid.

  • I agree with Piss Christ. It takes shock sometimes to make a point. We have to examine ourselfs.

  • A wise lady. Thanks for posting!

  • this woman is amazing. At a time when analytic criticism of the actual making and form of the painting, rather than concept and image, has collapsed in the art world, it is a catholic nun who is resuscitating it. It is like something out of Dostoevsky!

  • 3:00 to 4:00 is a really good judge art on a philosophical scale. Sister Wendy is turly a brilliant mind.

  • Has anybody done diarrhea Christ yet .. Okay okay,.. I meant Taco Bell aftermath Christ..

  • weeeEEEEWw BIBLE BUDDIEESSSSS

  • and people are reacting the same way to Gaga's "Judas" which i think is pretty similar to Piss Christ.

  • The left has welcomed Muslims into their fold, because they use them for muscle. You will never see a news program condemn car burnings, terrorist plots or calling them out on human rights abuses. They have joined forces to attack Christians, and they do it as bullies for exactly the reasons dildo here is talking about. "They should turn the other cheek." Christ was a warrior. Read the book of Revelations. He comes to "judge" and "make war." Also read 2 Corinthians 5:10 and 2 Thessalonians 1:7.

  • What is piss christ?

  • to be fair these "artists" should show some stones and mock islam........

  • @SmashDiversity3 I see, that would make "Piss Christ" ( a photograph taken 25 years ago ) fair in your eyes then? As long as Allah is put in urine, it's ok for Christ ( actually A crucifix ) to be submerged in it too.

Yet, I'd bet my life that you & countless other "Christians" laughed out loud at the blasphemous cartoon of Allah that Muslims took exception to. Did they demand that blasphemous cartoons of God or Christ be printed in a newspaper "to be fair"?

  • @DidloDurante

I think both religions are far fetched but the "pc" media goes out of its way not to offend Muslims. When was the last time Christians rioted because their religion was offended?

  • @SmashDiversity3 Watch this space.

  • @SmashDiversity3 To be fair they should mock whoever they want their all equally imaginary...but Islam does have crazier crazies than the Christians as of now

  • Oh, and btw, Serrano is a Jew. Will his next contribution to piss-artistry be a mugshot of Rabbi Maimonides (aka Rambam) in a jug of pee? Don’t hold your breath, you might be in for a long wait.

  • @Matthysable "Piss Christ" is a single colour photograph taken nearly 25 years ago...Christianity has pissed over the masses for centuries. Why don't you print off a picture of this Rabbi & place it in some urine if you think it will redress some balance? Then start on other religions...except I imagine it's only Judaism & Islam that really get your goat.

Instead why don't you forgive Serrano...that's what Christians are supposed to do with "sinners" isn't it?

  • I thought I’d mosey on over to Google images to see if the piss-artist Serrano really was trying to wake believers up to the lack of faith in our modern times, as the hip and illumined ‘sister’ Wendy would have us believe.

Do it yourself and have a look. My feeling is that this fella needs help - serious help, and soon. And you want to know something else my bothers and sisters? So does Wendy!

  • Which is worse, someone with something to say but unable to find anyone prepared to listen, or a willing listener unable to find someone with something to say?

With Serrano as speaker and the sad, sorry, PC Wendy as his willing ‘listener’, we have someone with nothing to say to a listener unable to hear - a remarkable non-achievement fit for our pernicious times!

Well done Andres! Well done Wendy! A true act of piss-artist genius!

  • She's wonderful, I'm so glad she likes Piss Christ, although she doesn't point out it's formal beauty. I wish all christians were as liberal as she on issues of censorship.

  • "When men stop believing in God they don't believe in nothing; they believe in anything".

    —G. K. Chesterton, 1936

  • @zone1480 sometimes, but in many cases they start to ground their ethics in promoting the well being of conscious creatures. Atheism is not a belief structure, it is an admission that one's belief structure is not based in the supernatural

  • If there were no God, there would be no atheists. --G.K. Chesterton

  • @zone1480 atheists don't exist, did you know that? :P You cannot prove the non-existence of something that does not exist.

  • "[To an atheist] the universe is the most exquisite masterpiece ever constructed by nobody."

    — G. K. Chesterton

  • Piss Christ has become an icon for bitter atheists who resent others for their faith. How ironic that they're all up in arms now that vandals destroyed it in Avignon. They can dish it, but they can't take it.

  • @selfpotatoify

You're going to have to lead me by the hand, because I'm not following this at all. Assuming for the sake of argument that Piss Christ has become "an icon for bitter atheists who resent others for their faith", what does that make them guilty of?--just piss-poor attitude (pun intended). What are these vandals guilty of?--the violent destruction of another's property and censorship. It's as if an insult was met with murder and you called it even.

  • @justicecallicles Alright, one is a copy and the other is a print. Since Jesus himself was not pissed on, but just an artist's depiction of him dying on a cross for the sake of humanity, is it such a big deal that a photographic print was defaced. Serano still has the negatives, while God has all the positives.

  • Well, its is clear that only a poor moral worm can go that low to finance his ferrari on the shoulders of a tortured to death.

The one who needs to go that way is nothing else than a poor peace of sh..t.

    Not more and not less.

  • Sister Wendy is a dumb cunt. There, now I've said something debatably useful. Christ suffering on a cross, removed from grace, for three days as he experienced the agony of human suffering wasn't enough? We should have pissed on Him? Wendy, you drooling slag with your summer teeth, Jesus' sacrifice was for keeps. The wickedness of humanity has not changed since the expulsion from the garden. Many times God has just wanted to nuke us and start over, He was so disgusted by us. Piss Christ is why.

  • @Ematched As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure. You see it as cheap souvenirs, but for many others, a rosary or a plastic Jesus night light is a comforting reminder of their faith, whether you bought it from a jeweler or a 711. It makes no sense that God would object to objectifying religion, when the Church going back to when Christ walked this earth placed so much importance on objects, for example the holy communion. The crucifix is a physical reminder of Christ's mortality.

  • @selfpotatoify Yeah, and Jesus would love that part where you called one of his most-devoted followers "a dumb cunt." How dare she have a rounded perspective of the world, instead of the narrow one you espouse.

Keep pissing on Christ. I'm sure it brings tears to his eyes, while he drinks a slushy at 711. Commodify to your heart's desire.

  • @Ematched You have lost the argument on what is sacred and profane. So has Sister Wendy, which calls her devotion into question. There was nothing more profane than Christ taking human form. Period. A crucifix is the symbol for that. It has significance not for what it is, but for what it symbolizes. Every person who tries to defend it as something other than what it is, even if they have big gnarly beaver teeth and wear a habit, fails on that point. You are a dumb, piss-swilling cunt.

  • @selfpotatoify I hope you're not a Christian. Your comments would not reflect well on you if you were.

There's always a gap between the comment and the action.

Don't be so closed-minded. There's a lot of beauty in the world, and everyone should make an effort to see it.

  • @Ematched "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:5

So, you object to applying a vulgarity to a nun, but nothing about defiling a religious emblem. Hypocrite. "Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue." Psalms 52:2-4 You cannot judge me or speak about beauty.

  • @selfpotatoify I place no value in the Bible as a way to live life, so I'm actually not being hypocritical. I object to you being so hypocritical that you quote the Bible, then call a person in one of the most revered roles for Catholics "a dumb, piss-swilling cunt."

    You are the hypocrite here.

I appreciate the Bible for its literary value and the wealth of allusions we have drawn from its material. The Book of Job is one of the greatest texts ever written, IMO, and I doubt God even exists.

  • @Ematched God does not care about your "role." He cares about your faith. Sister Wendy is a fugly old bird who lives in a trailer in the woods and reads books all day. She took her "vows" likely because no one would marry her and her other option was to be a spinster and rely on her family's support. You're secular and believe in freedom of speech. If there is nothing sacred about a crucifix to you, what's so special about a nun's habit? I'm free to call her whatever I want. You're a hypocrite.

  • @selfpotatoify Keep speaking like a good Christian. Jesus is watching after all. lol

I'm sure he'd cast a stone just like you're doing.

  • @Ematched Yeah, nobody is actually throwing stones at old beaver teeth like Muslims do every day at young rape victims and children. Boo hoo, I called a "sister" a bad name, while women are being buried up to their necks in sand and actually killed by good Muslims. That seems to escape many on the left. Jesus was not just preceding Bob Dylan. This was a reformation unlike Muslims who choose to regress to 700 AD. God sent Jesus to tell people not to actually throw rocks at people not ignore lies.

  • @selfpotatoify "Old Beaver Teeth"...nice to read this & other non judgmental, serene, Godly & compassionate comments from all you people claiming to be "followers of Christ".

Try doing what you are supposed to do as Christians ( ie. EMULATE CHRIST )...things like "understanding", "compassion", "forgiveness" are Christ-like. Aggression, pride & intolerance may be very American values, but they were pretty thin on the ground in Nazareth for Jesus.

  • @DidloDurante That's a real laugh riot. A Piss Christ fan condemning judgment. "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." YOU JUDGED FIRST. Your pissy artist decided to document sacrilege and call it art. All artist works are judged. Sister Wendy is an art critic. Well, let's judge her, too. God made her an ugly old fool, and don't think for a minute she doesn't know it.

  • shit christ

  • Sister Wendy gets it. Bill Moyers . . . not so much.

  • LOL I lived there for 4 yrs.

  • HER TEETH ARE SO HUGELY GROTESQUE, I CANT STOP STARRING AT THEM!

  • @TheMedievalMan she has english teeth . Just ignore them.

  • @tenorismo LOL! There are truth to stereotypes!

  • @TheMedievalMan Grow-up! This woman is a genius.

  • @PlatniumProductions

Please return under the rock where you crawled out from.

  • @PlatniumProductions---what the hell is your problem?

  • Piss Christ is really beautiful, I think.

  • I believe that one can look at "Piss Christ" and see a perfect metaphor for the sacrifice of God. Jesus, God, immerses himself in the muck and mire of human life in order to share his grace with people.

Am I the only one who sees this possible meaning?

And I am not suggesting this is intentional on the artist's part, but the work itself does suggest this nobler interpretation if you think about it. It is a visually beautiful image if you allow yourself to look.

  • haha i never knew urine could be so profound! lmao

  • I would like to create a painting of me taking a dump on Bill Moyers. Now thats Art!!

  • Disgusting. If this were a piece on Moohamid or something against atheist these assholes like Moyers and the Hollywood Christian haters would have their pantys in a wad. FuckING hypocrites!!

  • art has no purpose other than it either occupying a space or just something to look at i think this is a very beautiful picture in my opinion :)

  • she is amazing, I wish her opinions represented the majority, not the minority.

  • What a bright and intelligent woman. An open mind and understanding what goes on in life. As she has chosen to serve the god she believes in and has great respect for all human actions and behaviours. On the same level as any great philosopher, but not taken seriously due to her cloak? I'd like to meet her and have some interesting discussions!

  • @jonnynav64 I agree, I'd love to have lunch with Sister Wendy. I am a former Catholic and she makes me at least have some respect for the faith.

  • Eh.... Wassup doc?

  • this nun is epic

  • @johnnoization Then why do most religions demonise homosexuals? Moronic comment.

  • Blimey, Sister Wendy is amazing.

  • @locigallady I doubt it

  • @babyranks4

    can i ask why?

  • @locigallady Well if only you asked questions about your religion or any religion you wouldn't be asking

  • @babyranks4

i know what you mean if i were to critically think about my/any religion, i'd see that it's wrong....well i'm afraid to tell you that i did/do ask many question and that i after a lot of thinking decided to be roman catholic

  • @locigallady Ok i don't see why you would be afraid to say so...anyway i don't mind people believing in god or in religion as long as they don't try to shove down other peoples throat (it happens) and pass it as truth. My family is roman catholic i was too and they i decide to ask questions and now im an atheist

  • Sister Wendy is not pissed off by PissChrist per se?

I have just gained respect for this nun.

Imagine the Vatican being this liberal: Their world would just fall apart.

  • @hyperseauton

she's way too smart to be pissed. Moyers just beeeggggging the hell out of the question.

  • You are inspirational and insightful with your comments wish others were more open minded even if they don't agree

  • "Created in God's image." She's so right! What a beautiful, sweet, free spirit! And look at her smile 6:54. She shines! Sister Wendy blesses us with her vision.

  • I find it funny how all the militant atheists claim that religions don't respect people and only hurt, while they themselves are so close-minded they believe in the abolishment of religion.

Sister Wendy is extremely intelligent, open-minded, and, as a nun should be, all-loving. She truly is a woman of God.

  • She is probably more open minded than most nuns, but that isn't saying much.

Ultimately, she is using her own interpretation of Andre Serrano's work to advocate her own simple minded and dogmatic faith in Jesus' alleged sacrifice.

At least she is advocating freedom of expression, but that is overshadowed by her insistence that we bow the knee to morbid fairly tales, and her simplistic explanation of Serrano's photograph sounds like an advertisement for the Catholic Church.

  • @dcoy773 There is absolutely nothing simple-minded about this woman. She was educated at Oxford and her books are quite profound. I would invite you to head over to the library and check out one of her works...if you dare. You'd be surprised.

  • @fjgasior she is insightful and wonderful you are right fjg

  • I LOVE SISTER WENDY!!!!!!!!!! <3

She's so clever. I agree with EmeraldxFairy completely.

  • Sister Wendy handled all of Bill Moyer's questions with such grace and sophistication. I was at times very frustrated at some of his questions, which were, in my point of view, in very bad taste.

I certainly would not have had the patience she had, as he seemed to be asking questions not in an impartial way, but was actually quite opinionated.

  • She was fantastic in the interview without doubt. Though I wonder if it was because of her insight and annunciation that Bill felt he could ask more challenging questions. I submit that if Sister Wendy wasn't so expert, that he may have backed off to avoid pinning her back to the wall. 3:36 Bill sits back in his chair smiling at her genius, and a few seconds later totally accepts her argument. I think he has a lot of respect for her.

  • You do have a point there. I agree that it could very well have been that reason for him to ask challenging questions. He may be asking questions that the majority of people are actually thinking but too afraid to ask.

However, I still can't help to feel frustrated, listening to him at times. It was the same when he interviewed Joseph Campbell too.

But you're right, he certainly does give insightful interviews.

  • I agree. He's good, but not an amazing interviewer. He has a slightly condescending bedside manner, and his questions toe the line. Michael Parkinson is probably my favorite interviewer as he is able to use his charm to ask questions most of us wouldn't dare, but generally without the interviewee taking offense.

In any case, Sister Wendy was took Bill's questions in her stride, and I found her answers fascinating.

  • Wow, thank you very much for introducing Michael Parkinson to me. I absolutely love watching British shows, especially those on the BBC, but I've never heard of him before. I will definitely check his shows out!

    Many thanks! :)

  • This poor WASP bastard can't get his mind out of the gutter. For god's sake, she's a nun! What more can she do to convince you that she's not trying to be sexual in her descriptions?

  • 6:56: The interviewer displays his unsophisticated viewpoint. He nearly loses his attempts at objectivity.

  • For a religious conservative, she's the ultimate liberal!

  • I always laugh when people talk about "what has gone wrong." You know they're full of shit when they can't actually name the problem they're talking about in real terms.

  • I love her explication. Hands down, best one I've heard.

  • PISS CHRIST is not controversial art. It's disgusting; if Serrano didn't mean to be sacreligious.

  • Sister Wendy can have an endearing sense of down-to-earth humor.

In "The Story of Painting", where she is discussing Caravaggio and his paintings of beautiful young men; she remarks: "Even his [paintings of] Greek gods have the look of rentboys!"

  • Interesting... I was looking up the D-Beat band and I stumbled across this (I'm somewhat familiar with Serrano's work, but the punk band is considerably more fun). Anyway, she's a a smart lady and certainly fun to listen to.

  • Sister Wendy's videos are great.

  • I understand your view, however not all faith is bad, it just people who throughout history have miss used it for their own fascist intent. If we can learn from the mistakes of the past, then we can learn to grow in peace with everyone around us. Despite the point that you make, I cannot condone any enticement for hate for any groups in society who share the same ideals or interests, whether religious or not. Peace be with you brother, I'm sorry you feel that way, though In understand.

  • It's like saying 'guns don't kill people, people do'. 'Religions don't harm people, people do'. Take away all the guns and watch how many less people are harmed. Take away religion and watch how many less people are harmed. Finchmyster16 don't tell people you understand them, when you evidently don't. At least be honest and be open about your ignorance. It's your weak, mild mannered, simplistic diplomacy which is the greatest danger to human safety.

  • What the hell did you just say? You are unintelligible.

  • She has done her homework on the reasons behind Andres Serrano`s work. She is the only person so clued up in art that hasnt stamped down the moral high ground censorship stick that isnt a Art Critic

  • Woah, is that a burka she's wearing?

Alright, all stupidity aside, why does Piss Jesus get so much attention? It's just a bad piece of art! It took no skill to make, you'd never put it in a museum, and it's as if the only reason it was ever made was to offend people just for the hell of it.

I don't find it offensive. I just find it stupid.

"LOOK AT ME! I piddled in a jar, put a cross with jesus on it in the jar with my potty in it... and took a picture. I'M AN ARTIST!" Bullshit.

  • It's not called Piss Jesus. In December 1999 Andreas Serrano's Piss Christ sold for $162 000.00. The price has since gone up considerably. It's one of the highest paid photos in a US auction. I don't think you understand the cultural and religious weight behind the Piss Christ photo. It goes beyond your immature comprehension of art.

  • Oh, just because people are willing to shell out a bunch of money for it doesn't necessarily make it important. I look at this, and I see a bunch of people getting all upset over a photograph of what in my opinion is art that didn't take any effort to make. The whole situation just says to me, "I want attention! Pay attention to this." And I think that's just kind of dumb.

  • Serrano isn't trying to drum up attention for himself. Piss Christ was an articulate attempt to sum up the lack of religious faith in the late 80's. Serrano pushed the boundaries of what was considered tasteful and the back lash from Jesse Helms and the conservative party was anything but casual. This is what real art does, it fires up the emotions and it brings you front and center of what people believe in.

  • somebody put an obama christ symbol in a jar of piss and watch the leftists howl.

  • ellwyn i really really really like that idea, interesting

  • she is so adorable

  • She is so inspiring, witty, insightful, honest, and unpretentious. What an art critic! And what a refreshing presence to encounter nowadays. I always feel enriched after listening to what she has to say.

  • that nun (sister wendy???) is so fkin funny hahaha ^^

  • What she says about comforting art seems to be applicable to people who prefer black and white perspectives on morality.

  • They shouldn't be using tax money to fund art of any kind. That isn't the government's job.

  • It's certainly true that money doesn't equal great art. One could argue that oppression and limitation leads to greater art...

  • Blue Poles by Pollack was bought by the australian govt for 1.3million Aus and is now worth 40million Aus....

  • Is it possible to abuse freedom of speech?

  • yes, telling lies is abusing freedom of speech

  • That's assuming that freedom of speech is a privilege (not a right), I think that's a dangerous thought.

  • Comment removed

  • Americans might have freedom of speech, but they do not have freedom of thought.

  • They don't have freedom of speech. They have the promise of freedom of speech, but it is frequently denied. I don't know what you mean by "don't have freedom of thought," but your mind is something you can explore without anyone knowing or interfering. Bringing those thoughts into action and speech brings about the barriers of our culture.

  • Under the Bush administrations

there was censorship, and self-censorship of thought

through the toxic bomb of christian fundamentalism.

Your voting down of my innocuous comment

clealy demonstrates that you were also contaminated.

  • Everyone's contaminated, honey, if you want to look at it that way. I'm not trying to censor you, and I'm not a part of any Christian Fundamentalism.

  • I like that she puts the responsibility on Serrano as much as Jesse Helms - a great, or even good, artist isn't so simple to react to.

By her definition, Norman Rockwell's work is comforting while American Gothic is probably not. And it's the artist behind the brush that makes the difference.

  • is it just me - or did she just reinterpret the Catholic Church's policy on sexuality? I love this woman! SIster Wendy for pope!

  • I'm an agnostic, but that picture was downright absurd.

  • Piss Christ, I assume you mean?

Not absurd, just a minor effort by a minor artist - you can see I agree with the sister here.

  • Logically, you have to either compare nuns to artists or Sister Wendy to Serrano.

If you want to compare professions, artists have been known to do some pretty awful things, too (Caravaggio, for example),

while plenty of nuns have nursed the sick and helped the poor.

I trust people after getting to know them enough to see they're worthy of trust, regardless of what they do for a living.

  • "if you were blind you would be without sin. But since you say we see your sin remains".

  • Amen. You give me hope, my friend.

  • Yes, enlightenment thru contemplation on art does not have to be about following a particular religion. At its core, every good spiritual practice is about being present. That she has used art to facilitate this is what I love best about her.

  • Yeah, too bad your friend doesn't.

  • @ScinLaeca358 yeah, she must have quite a forceful mind, it would be nice to know her

  • The artist said of my analysis "finally someone gets it".

These people wait until they see someone else's ideas float and then heap it on themselves like they discovered it. Its more important to build their position than to recognize the originator. This way they look like the sensitive and seeing ones.

"The words of the prophets are written on subway walls and tenement halls"

  • I was saying this long before her but I am a nobody.

  • There's a difference, my friend, between having people use your name long after you're dead to justify wars you were never a party to and actually sending them to war yourself.

Jesus, even if only a man, was a hell of a lot better than Hitler. He was his opposite in fact, because he despised prejudice against other ethnic groups.

  • Thanks so much for posting the videos of Sister Wendy. She's *AWESOME*! :D

    ~Cindy! :)

  • This is great footage. I love Sister Wendy. So cute (and funny). Thanks for posting. :)

  • I was actually offended at first sight of Piss Christ, but that's just me. It looked like the work of some pretentious asshole who wants to stick it to all Catholics, but I could be wrong

  • Yes, you are.

  • you are not wrong - it is the work of a pretentious asshole.

  • I've lived just half an hour outside SECCA (the Winston-Salem, North Carolina, foundation that granted Piss Christ an award)... and find it very ironic that NC Senator Jesse Helms, referenced in this clip, denounced SECCA for its support of Piss Christ and the subsequent $15,000 grant awarded to it...

If nothing else, it just goes to show our stereotypes of (nuns, southerners, etc)... are very unwarranted and we need to be open about people just as Suster Wendy states we must be about art.

  • "We'we not tweating him wif wevewance." X^D Sister Wendy Rocks!

  • Bill is confusing Puritanism with Catholicism. puritans are shocked, catholics accept the realities of life, the good the bad and the ugly.

  • How delightful. I want to go to a museum straight away. Please post more Sister Wendy. Thank you for posting these. I shall return frequently.

  • Thank you for posting these videos with Sister Wendy.
