  • I cant stop watching this series! I think this might be my first gun

  • what choke does that shotgun have?

  • @171RAVEN Modified my friend.

  • Dave how exactly did you get that metal finish on the barrel? Just sand down the bluing and grease periodically? I ask because I'm getting a Remington model 10 for my father turning 60 and I it has all the original bluing worn off and I'd like to give it the same rustic look you have on your H&R.

  • what is "tallow?"

  • Why not make a para-cord style sling?

  • Hey Dave, you should get the Choate foregrip that has a storage compartment.

  • Dave are you a dipper?

  • Ok so some tell me what towloo is.the stuff dave is using to lube the 12g and using to seal off the 12g shots

  • @mogges1 Its called tallow. Dave has a couple videos about it.

  • @mogges1 its like lard but lard is from pigs and tallow is from Cows or Bison

  • I'm loving the "21st Century Long Hunter Series" Dave, can't wait to put some of these skills into practice, keep up the great work.

  • nice

  • These are great guns... I picked up a used gun for less than $100.00 Best part is most single shot guns have interchangable barrels.

  • How old is that gun?

  • I agree the 12GA is one of the most useful firearms around. Don’t really care for the tack job though. Just me, I don’t care for gun bling. It reminds me of something Poncho Via would use. I am currently redoing a 12G that had rocks glued in the stock.

  • All the h&r 's are great that is all I use. This was a really good vid I have just the gun to use it on!

Don't waste money! Single shot break opens are a real man's gun! Lol

  • The gun looks great, dave. How's that duluth pack anorak workin out for you? I'm thinkin about gettin one.Just wonderin what your feed back on it would be. Keep up the great work, dave we all appreciate it!

  • just saying if any of these veiwer are interested in an h&r shotgun after this dont hesitate i went dove hunting with mine i dont know what it is about them but i was shooting doves from 50-70 yards away on the fly mines kinda old but its still a beast

  • Hey Dave - i have an old single shot 12 guage that just sits in the safe and never gets used due to my more modern firearms and i must say this has been an awesome series of videos that really have made me think about the versitilities and different options and uses for this old shotgun. very cool and i must say Thanks for all the great ideas and information you share!

  • When I did my muzzle loader with tact I pre drilled all my holes. I was scared out of my mind. Then I thought, "Heck, it's my gun". It turned out wonderful. My favorite one of all.

  • I have heard of this walnut method being used to dye steel traps and snares also. Great video as always man. Keep up the good work!

  • As always, I really appreciate your videos. On a side note, where did you get

rain coat or parka your wearing in this video?

  • Very nice. Excellent video Dave.

  • Nice looking gun Dave. The whole series is very interesting, keep it up.

    thanks

    Nate

  • mmmmmmmmm grizz green

  • @H95Shooterv12 mmmmmmmmm mouth sores

  • a good way to brown it is to heat it up a little with a clean fire such as a torch, not too much, but pretty hot, then dump it into old coffee grounds for a couple hours, it gives it an awsome "rust" look, but not too bad

  • lol i came here thinking i was gonna learn how to cook walnuts....lol can u even eat walnuts?

  • @kibbles306 are you asking if walnuts are edible or if he's allergic to them? If you're asking if they're edible the answer is yes. You can eat walnuts raw by the way.

  • I love the fact that you get out there and do your thing whether it's raining or not.

  • Hey Dave, i was inherited a 22 bolt action rifle and it the finish is partially sanded off but i dont know how to re do it. I tried taking sand paper to it but it didnt do anything. should i use a belt sander? I hope to re varnish the wood once it is all sanded off. And i made a paracord sling which is really nice. Please let me know, Thanks

  • Farmhouse, outhouse, and henhouse...haha, love it. The tacks look very nice, especially the pathfinder arrow.

  • Great channel. The woods your stomping around in looks exactly like mine. I will be back to check out more of your vids

  • Hey Dave, what kinds of shells do you carry with you in the woods?

  • dave buddy i saw you in discovery channel big hugg buddy, please answer back

  • Green Grizzly, Yum

  • Dave,

You are just flat out, hard run, straight up, plain ole COOL!!!! I would have never, EVER thought of putting tacks into my stock or staining my shotgun...cool cool COOL!!!!!

  • just wanted to say that i appreciate the fact that you take quality video, it makes all the difference

  • That arrow says "Front Toward Enemy" Claymore style.

  • With all the tallow that's being rubbed on everything, have you had any problems with critters gnawing on your stuff? Seems like that would be an awful lot of 'food' smell around camp. Not that you're likely to have much choice in a survival situation.

  • Can't really beat the simplicity or value of that gun. Great video!!

  • raise the camera on the next video, thanks.

  • Awesome Dave! Just got myself a Savage 24 22WMR over 20GA along with an old Sears and Roebuck! I really like the uniqueness of your H&R. Good luck!

  • Another great video Dave. I wish I had the time to get involved in one of your classes. I want to wish you and Ms Iris a very happy Thankgiving, maybe it will stop raining for a few hours here in Ohio and you can get a peek at the sun!

  • For the sling I'd say weave/plait/braid it, 'cause I'd imagine that even though leather can be tooled to look really nice and is tough as well, a plait/braid could give you cordage if required and can still look nice.

Mind you, you could plait some thin leather together too I guess.

  • Continued,

You found I guess what might be the next best thing to a colonial fowler, I own a doglock fowler in 14ga. Wouldn't go to the woods with anything else.

It's about the only gun in my case that gets used, you shoot B.P. You probably know why.

You did a knock out job again on this video

    Looking forward to more.

  • Dave, I'm really enjoying this series. I've always liked learning how to do things the old way but also love my Gortex and Under armor. You can mix the two and have a lot of fun with it. Great job I'm looking forward to more in the 21 century longhunter series

  • Kodiak, check out The Scarlet Scarab. It's a online store they sell oil cloth shirts kinda like Daves.

Dave, bro, I get what you did here, and for allot of people it's good I guess, there is only one thing you said here that rubbed me wrong I guess, that is using the term "experimental archeology" in talking about a 12 ga. Brake barrel.

I take to the woods a 14 ga. Dog lock fowler, I am going to try the walnut browning, I was going to brown with 1/2 lemon juice and 1/2 peroxide, it's in the wh

  • @debonairedragon It's a Duluth anorak he dyed in a recent video.

  • if your wanting to be like a pioneer, Why not buy a blackpowder rifle? then ull be totally authentic in terms of ur firearm. you could then also use your powder horn to start fires with the gunpowder as mentioned in your combustion video

  • Dave, you mention black powder have you ever looked into making rudimentary black powder in a long term survival situation and how that could be done? I would love to see a video with that. I am sure you probably know this but the formula ingredients for black powder are Potassium Nitrate (Salt Peter) Sulfer and Charcoal.

  • how bad of a scare was left when you burnt your gash with blackpowder on dual survivor

  • That's pretty pimp right there.

  • Dave, you should post up a few hi-res picks of this for us! Awesome!!

  • Dave you should have tried using a plum brown barrel finish I think it would have given you the finish you were looking for.

  • @bigskymarine I think this one will turn as it ages and is exposed and re greased like an old Iron Skillet

  • And you can reload shells with common tools, DIY slugs and shot.. convert small game loads into slug loads.. 12 ga ammo and shell casings are everywhere and a shotgun is by far the most versatile. BTW, nice color on that stock. The NEF (New England Firearms) line includes over and under, various caliber and 20 or 12 ga. or a single barrel break open can be had used cheap. Mine is a double barrel 12 ga stagecoach gun. A tad more weight, but twice the fun. It's short and fits in a pack...

  • @InTheSticks0001 If one can't find an M6 survival rifle, a NEF with .22 over 12 ga is a good substitute. The stage coach model, a double barreled side by side, made primarily for cowboy action shooting may no longer be available, but it is light and handi in comparison to full length barrels and breaks down into a small package 18' in length. It is easy to set off both barrels by accident and let loose 18 .32 caliber round balls at 1200fps.

  • just redone a 12 single wished id of thought of that .instead of using high heat flat black bbq grill paint.

  • Dave Great Video. That peice look great. A paracord sling might work in with your series idea.

  • The tacks are a nice touch. Makes a plain Jane gun look pretty cool and traditional. I like it.

  • i think the "Iris" tattoo on your ring finger was an awesome idea

  • Now that's an intro!

  • Great job on that old single 12! Looks perfect... That's as simple as it gets my brother... love the vids! Wade

  • what kind of shells do you carry with you when out in the woods i just got the same gun the day the vid was posted lol great work

  • I agree. Along with .22 lr, a 12 ga is great survival weaponry. The chances of running across ammo is far more likely in these gauges/ calibers.

  • Loving this series !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That gun needs a Hawkins style sling I think that's what I would make for it! I love to watch your videos and try things with my kids!

  • where was the blueing?

  • awesome gun . i sure do like a 12 gauge

  • I prefer the savage 24 20ga/ .22LR over under single shot. I find it gives me more versatility. BUT everyone has an opinion. Lol.

I'm sure now I will see every other hunter with tacks in their stock! You're changing the face of America, one video at a time.

Good job brother! Keep it up!

  • Nice one Dave. My only critisizm is your refrence to a hunting firearm as a "wepon". In my mind a wepon is specifically used against people. A Japanese Katana is a wepon but a machette is not untill its used on a porson. A car could be a wepon if you intentionally ran someone down. Any firearm could be a wepon if used against a person. Some firearms are specifically designed to shoot people 'military' so are wepons by definition. All other guns are firearms or just guns.

    Love your work

    Cheers

  • Awesome Dave looks awesome

  • Enjoying these Dave.

Hint: The old timers browned their metal parts by emersing or applying stale urine. It will create a fine layer of rust that you remove the next day with 0000 steel wool. It will then "fill the pores" about the same way as cast iron cookware does. Once you achieve the "patina" and give it a little oil it will become almost rust proof. Much better than blueing.

Wish I was twenty years younger, I'd be up there enjoying you! I just become to fond of my easy chair now.

  • Very cool!

    Thanks for sharing Dave.

  • Great job, great rifle. ATB Sepp

  • `Wow dude im very much digging these Longhunter series vids.... Keep em coming.

  • poor gun , why destroy the nice wood furniture ?

  • whats is this doing ?

  • @snowmanjr25 It's decoration. Personalizing. I do it to alot of my new knives/guns, etc.

  • cool. im loving this series!

  • You know Dave,.... that would make a nice sub. give a way prize,... hint, hint. ^_*

  • Nice Gun mod Video. Those Single Shot 12's are tuff as nails too. i would go for a Field Gun cleaning kit in the buttstock of some kind.

Hand made leather sling from the Deer Hide couple of Vids Back would Be Great and i would love to see it with Shell holder and Steel buckle/awl set up.

It would tie it very well

  • what boots are you wearing in that wet weather? thx

  • I made my own sling for my M95 rifle with 1 strand of 1000 pound test bank line that i passed from the sling mounts seven times then I used 250 pound test bank line to weave between those strands and keep them together and tight. It works very well and it is comfortable and since it is bank line I have a bunch of extra cordage should i need it...It works well for me and I know that the sling will most likely outlast the rifle...

  • I love it when Dave is having fun, it really shows!

  • I gotta get me one of them anaracks

  • It turned out nice, thanks for sharing!

  • For a Sling you could do a cordage that you could disassemble in a pinch and use, i made one outta 550 for a .22 like that.

  • nice really nice,, maybe a woven leather strap would be sweet on that ol beauty..

  • I've learned more watching your videos and dual survival than I did in wilderness survival class..thanks so much for sharing your knoledge

  • That coat is exactly what I've been looking for. How did you come by it?

  • @nylon53mm Its Duluth Pack's "Canvas Anorak" that he dyed using a walnut dye. As far as I know Duluth Pack only sells them in white but Dave has a video on how he did it if your interested. He put it out about a month or so ago and its on his channel.

  • Check out Dave's "Utilizing Resources Walnut Dye and Opossum Tallow" video. You'll find out everything you need to know about it. Hope that helps.

  • Now this was a very enjoyable video. Simple and to the point, Job well done. Thank you, enjoy the starlight and your warm campfire!

  • One question/comment my dad tell me to put saddle soap on my ka bar sheath and handle since it is leather is that effective or am i wasting my time, he says it is just for leather preservation what does it really do?

  • @TheUprisingNinja Basically it creates a protective barrier that helps against many things like sun damage or weather. I don't know about saddle soap but I imagine saddles are leather and if it's good for a leather saddle then it's good for a leather sheath. As for wasting your time, only you can decide that. I personally like to think that if I take extra good care of my gear then when I need it, my gear will take extra good care of me. You get back exactly what you put in.

  • @letalkingelephant

    AMEN!!! Later...

  • Dave, I love the idea of using nails to create designs in the stock!

  • is he the guy from dual survival

  • @eastern177 yes he is.

  • I'm loving this stuff brother!!! Keep it coming!

  • Dave you're the best i've learned so much from you thanks so much!!!

    God Bless

    SP

  • I like the tack work, I had thought about doing that myself on an old 20 ga. H & R I have myself.

  • do a leather strap!

  • its bedazzled!!!!

  • Does the bees wax do the same as the tallo and would i be better liquifiying it so it would get better penatration in the wood. Thanks dave waiting for PH1 in the mail !!

  • How do you ignite the powder if you use that like a black powder gun?

  • @Ilovetheplatypus He said he is going to show us in his next video. Dave is MacGyver when it comes to improvising so Im sure this will be interesting.

  • got the same gun, awesome job dave!

  • Nice the tacks realy help dress the gun up .

  • YAYYY!!! We're back talking about firearms again... WOOOOHOOOO...

(For those of us who were here from the very beginning, we remember the good old days)

  • just to clarify the walnut solution you talk about is made from the green hulls

  • I'm more of the 21st century Coureur de bois...love this series, are those soulier de boeuf ? aka muck boots, wheres your PF haversack? I love the single shot 12 gauge and you can't beat the price for 89 bucks

  • @LivingHistorySchool On my side bro at the beginning and the end?

  • @wildernessoutfitters I guess I'm getting old

  • @LivingHistorySchool Me too brother LOL!

  • did you do a video on walnut blueing and if not how do you do it exactly

  • Comment removed

  • Cool video Dave. I like the way it looks.

  • Looking foward to seeing blackpowder in the 12gauge. Remember the video you did with one of your sons and the screwdriver from Sears using blackpowder....

  • when i grow up, i want to be just like you... The gun looks 100% better. you rock

  • i just happen to have that same gun picked it up fer a cool $40 i buy them ever time i run across one i leave em in the out buildings just in case i need one

  • great video dave, im thinking leather for the sling. Whatever you go with, im sure it will turn out great

  • Awesome job dave....keep it comming!

  • That bed roll pack would go great with your set up!

  • I love my H&R

  • Tack a Pathfinder logo in the baby.

  • Makes me want to bear the cold and go hunt! Go git em!

  • Great video man.

  • Love it wall dun !

  • Nice mods!

I am fixing up a snap lock gun for the same purpouse.

    Thanks for sharing:o)

    Rob

  • Braided leather sling! braided leather!

  • Nice!

  • Very nice Dave...

  • why would you do this?

  • Why not just pick up an old caplock? Cool job on the 12g but Im not sure how thats a modern equivalent?

  • @DrDissent Okay I will explain in limited space, A Flintlock was smooth bore single shot and very versatile. A Cap lock is no where near as versatile as a SS12GA, I can shoot virtually all powders and any combination of ball or shot. Easy to maintain and care for, this is 21st century mentality, what modern gun is closest in functionality to the Flintlock? It has to be a 12/20GA SS SG brother.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Ahh okay, when you say functionality I agree. I guess the confusion was you mentioning experimental archeology. As Im sure youre well aware, there are a whole host of considerations, equips etc when your hauling around a flint lock vs hauling around something considerably different in design, maintainability, etc etc.

All Im really trying to say is if the goal is experimental archeology, Im not sure how much can be gleaned with an out of period firearm. Great vid tho :)

  • @DrDissent I have done the EA with FL by trekking in the DBNF on more than one occasion and doing many encampments in total 18th century gear, I am now looking ahead to modern comparisons with even more functionality that relate directly to those items. Hope that was not confusing. I like the retro and modern mix alot.

  • @wildernessoutfitters I like your retro and modern mix a lot myself bro... I think you call it "common man" and you do it damn well. I hope I didnt come off like I doubted your ability, I was just led astray when you mentioned the archeology part. If the goal was to learn about living in the civil war period Im not sure you could get an accurate feeling for it wearing gortex with an M16.

I love the approach, you cant learn it without doing it.

  • great video dave..i had thought along a simular line..i had even thought to add a wiping stick onder the barrel i know it would be short..but the reach from both ends of the barrel would fix that..a butt trap of some form like those used on military rifles could open up the bolt channel in the stock to easy removal of survival kit.. a leather sling would double as a strop for your edged tools as well....maybe add trade gun sites and load round ball loads for deer..great job dave..safe journeys

  • Great video Dave :)

  • you should put a pathfinder medalion in the Circle

  • dave's a BOSS!

  • what type of tacs are those? i may try this on my old ithica

  • very interesting idea with the tacks! might have to do some work on my H&R .50! and my 12ga! I love those H&R guns i think for the same reason you do. Thanks for the idea!!

  • youre cool i see a lot of you tv shows with cody lundee

  • Great video! Would it be possible to do a video to show us how you would use black powder in the H&R?

  • @jimmyjunkmail Coming Next

  • @wildernessoutfitters Hey Dave, cool video. I was wondering how you would maintain a firearm in a wilderness situation. For instance: using the tallow for gun oil, making brushes from things you find in the woods, maybe some take-apart tools that you can make from wilderness materials (maybe a wooden screwdriver?). That's a bit of a mystery to me, and I don't want to do it wrong if it becomes useful. Looking forward to that new channel, looks good.

  • @wildernessoutfitters I Look forward to it! I own Two H&R's A 10Ga and a 500 Smith & wesson. Great guns!

  • welp. moral is thank god for that sweet Grizzly Green.

  • Awesome video, nice shotty!

  • great video,im going to do this to an old 12 ga ive got thanks for a good video!

  • This is unrelated to the video, but I would like to see ferro rod blanks on your product site, in various diameters and lengths. Ferro rods are all from one or 2 manufacturers, it would be a good thing for those of us wanting things custom, that cannot afford top of the line equipment.

Also, are there any vids on crossbows? They are unregulated in Canada and much easier to get than a firearm.

  • Good video
