I think the idea is beautiful, but was severely turned off when I called and learned that just the plans cost around $8k...that's just for "plans". The whole idea should not only be about living freely, off grid & in alignment with nature, but to make it feasible for anyone. These homes are ridiculously overpriced especially when it's supposed to be an alternative. No utility bills should be a bonus, not a reason to jack up the price. I can pound dirt in a tire all day for free.
@faebaesite You can find plans that are very similar to this design, at least for the structure. For the plumbing for the planters and black water I am not sure.
I have researched this design and it is very viable. The only thing I disagree with is using aluminum cans in the construction. Those cans should be recycled. Recycling takes only 10% of the energy needed to produce aluminum... much better use of the aluminum cans.
@berettaNZ You do not need to be wealthy to live like this. Arid land is dirt cheap, lol, in many parts of the country. A home like this can be built for a small fraction of the cost of a conventional home and can be maintained with water and electricity for next to nothing.
DAAAAMN IT I thought I was so COOOOOOOL... this guy stole my original idea!!!!!!!!! and he must have stolen it by reading my mind and traveling 15 years before I was born so that it would look like he invented it!!!!!!! so clever...
Looks wonderful and expensive ... just like solar/electric autos ... totally out of reach to the normal person (which happens to be the majority). Now what?
Earthship pioneers will re-educate oil slick greedy corporate slimebags by making "them" work as cheap labour to build Earthships. In time, with kindness and discipline, they may loose their insanity and become humans once again.
Interesting step but not quite there yet, What happens when the solar panels, componants and the actualy house itself is no longer useable? will it still end up in a landfill?
Look up Cradle to Cradle design, offers a more long term solution to "waste"
i live north of seattle. i know of earthships in british colombia, but i just don't understand how i'd maintain a steady temperature without sun in the winter. is this practical in the pac northwest?
if every human being on this planet found out about earth ships and the entire community began adopting this form of home building global warming would not be a consern and the world would be much better off in the long run!
While I love Earthships, did anyone else find the video quality a little poor? On my playback it stuttered with camera movement. It was just a little but enough to be annoying. I'm looking for a really high quality, short summary of Earthships to link to permanently on my blog. Any other options available?
all of this yet you will still require "the grid" to maintain the parts used. When the sump pump goes bad and the solar panels go bad you have an expensive cave.......
My recomendation if you are not rich enough to spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars these cost to construct, like most Americans, is to study and learn all you can about their contruction, while collecting all the free and cheap construction materials you can find. Also study what others are doing. There are many variations and each one is in fact a variation. Then start building it. Advertize for free help. Volunteer to help others build theirs!
38 people are obviously not going to enjoy the future. :) get with it or get out. HOW COULD YOU dislike this. Shame on you. I encourage you to speak up and tell me one thing thats wrong with this idea.
@SVKmellow they make perfect sense to people that can form basic thoughts. The idea is use cans and bottles because they create a super strong wall while recycling our waste products. i would of thought that part was obvious and btw calling people hippies for building these earthships just shows you have never matured into a fully functional human being. Good luck with wrapping your small brain around the complexities of hippie earthships. peace.
@MWCstream they make no sense! the glass and aluminium bassically incorporates heatsinks into the walls. that means the walls are designed to lose heat... what is the sense in that? and I'm absolutelly confident that my intelectual capacity exceeds yours by a large margin for several reasons. Other than behaving likean idiot you're obviously incapable of even reading a 3 sentece long comment.
@SVKmellow These guys have been doing this for 40 Years. Don't you think that if the bottles and cans were not effective they would of stopped using them by now? They have had great success thanks for the negativity though.
Btw For your information if you ever get a chance to look at a real heat sink they have multiple aluminum branches that air can pass through to pass the heat. Its the same reason native Americans used leather strands to let the water wick out of there clothes when wet.
@MWCstream I'm not questioning everything they do... I just really don't think it's necessary to use the cans in an exterior wall. There are so many different ways to go and it just has to make a huge difference when you fill walls with metal that is known for its thermal conductivity. You can always compensate for it but why create the problem in the first place... I'm not sayin it's the best heatsink there is but it does exchange heat faster than other materials.
@SVKmellow I am new to earthships but i think they just use that for added insulation over the tired walls i could be wrong on that. Bottles hold in good heat and trap the suns warmth. I understand your point on the aluminum cans i was under the impression they used them for the interior walls for the most part. Either way they only use them for recycling reasons from what i understand not because there the best material. I personally would like them to try Hempcrete Walls.
@SVKmellow If your building something that you would like to hold lots of heat or cool. You use Rammed earth inside of old used tires like there doing with these earthships. Metal is expensive to produce unless your just cutting it out of old washing machines and dryers which they use for roofing. Still metal cost a lot of money and a lot of energy to cut it out of old appliances. ?I like what Michael said in the future our junk will be harvested and reused its only a matter of time.
I would build one inside a hill that way Id have a living roof I could go up on. and I would build one of rammed earth inside that hill. Im pretty sure the round house idea is great! And think it would with stand fore told harsh weathers. WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT NOT FUNDING YOUNG PEOPLE TO BUILD CHEAP AFFORDABLE HOUSES LIKE THIS. i should make a charity. In Canada.
i will biuld one on i mountain where i will love to be . inside nature being part of nature , not like today civilization . we seem like we are from another planet . :(
They're incredibly ugly and impossible to sell. not to mention the cost. To build one from scratch would be well into 300K+, I saw one that wasn't even half done for 250k, and the smallest one I saw that was finished was 350k

Haha.
@svenjohan They work really well in colder climates!!!!!!!!!! you might have to use wind power as opposed to solar and a thermal mass rocket stove would be a good stand by addition.
Question: Would this be possible to do in any country? Ofcourse a more tropical country would be a better start, but would they simple allow you to do this? And, after you bought the ground right? You can't just start building somewhere I guess. Thanks in advance.
I also grind up eggshells I collect from the diner. They go through hundreds of eggs a day and give me the shells for free. I have made a grinder that pulverizes the shells into a dust and it goes into my garden. I own two lots. One lot is my work lot, nursery lot, garage, and compost area and the other is the garden I take care of. I also have a greenhouse with radiant heat floors and windows with a hydroponic system that sprays water instead and air so they grow faster
I reuse all my organics in my garden. For example: My neighbors buy compost and mulch, when fall comes I take all the leaves and mulch them up and use as mulch or add to my compost. I even collect bags of free leave people leave on the street. I even have landscapers come drop wood chips and leaves. I just mulch everything. I have the most flourishing garden in my town. In droughts my garden is the greenest. My soil is aerated by worms. My garden is worm friend...
i am only 16 years old - but as soon as i discovered earth ships, i knew what i would be living in when i become an adult. thankyou for creating such a thing.
@Yimhere Yes you may have to add a rocket mass wood stove to supplement your heat in super long periods with no sun. These do very well in cold climates. You might also have to add wind power to your solar power.
Free energy has been here for a while ,But the Big corporations spend millions to ensure that information does not spread to the masses,Go to LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM and get the blueprints for a genuine magnet motor ,Be the revolution!
I am wondering how much success you have had with the burried cooling tube in areas like sothern Az and Nm since the ground temps are also high. The ground temps are not comparible to other southern state where the ground temp can be 60degF. Thanks!
@Jennipps yes i researched it further and since it is already used rubber, all the toxic components have been already used. The people building earthships have done tests and there is zero traces found. Your reasoning is correct as well, but i was thinking that "to burry garbage is worse than recycling" but it turns out that is not the case in this instance. :)

@GETBIZZYTV1 - you dont need to live in a recycled house "like these ones" in order to attain what should have always been free... natural resources...
@fatherofmy5 Sooooo are you really considering cooking and heating your water with crap fumes? Could you imagine makng a nice candle light dinner by cooking it with FARTS? So romantic, a panty dropper for sure!!!!
@aaronyeager83 Actually, methane gas (also in farts) is the gas used for stove top gas burners, and is similar to the gases butane (in lighters) and propane (in bbqs). The actual bad smell I imagine would be filtered out
Desalination is a process where salt and other minerals are removed from sea water to produce potable water for drinking and irrigation. Many sea-going ships and submarines make use of this technology. The idea of desalination is a huge area of research all across the world. Several different ideas have been developed, such as nuclear-powered desalination and solar-power desalination.
Environmentalism is a broad philosophy and social movement regarding concerns for environmental conservation and improvement of the state of the environment. Environmentalism and environmental concerns are often represented by the color green.
Environmentalism can also be defined as a social movement that seeks to influence the political process by lobbying, activism, and education in order to protect natural resources and ecosystems. An environmentalist is a person who may speak out about our natural environment and the sustainable management of its resources through changes in public policy or individual behavior by supporting practices such as not being wasteful.
In various ways (for example, grassroots activism and protests), environmentalists and environmental organizations seek to give the natural world a stronger voice in human affairs.
Love this concept, many of these ideas i've already thought of, including using glass wine bottles as inulators - but maybe not possible even if recorked !? What about building one of these for the water - like an Arc instead - think of the movie 'Waterworld' , only aim for 'blue water' quality vessels to survive possible 2012 flooding
On the other hand, people were making their own homes 10,000 years ago. Things changed, not due to a lack of creativity but because some people with a big army showed up and said you have to work for them to get anything, and we didn't kill them
@titanrain1 No, it isn't. Recycling them and keeping them in the usage stream is a better than sequestering them away in a structure where they can't be used anymore.
@sharkcellar Wouldn't they be getting used as a wall? Everyday? I agree recycling is a better use, but not all places have the facilities for doing so. So... building with them would be the next best thing IMO.
@earthship i am wondering on the toxic traces that will break down in the soil.. have you considered the long term effect on the regions earthships are being built? We are talking about A LOT of rubber being buried in soil...

@F0RD0Z I very rarely come across a house in the US that I wouldn't be able to break into with a simple... crowbar + my foot. Also glass breakers, even for stronger glasses, only cost .75 cents at the local hardware store. If someone really wants in, here's the shocker, nothing is stopping them short of building a house with concrete & metal rebar. In the ghetto neighborhoods I've seen houses with metal bars get robbed, turns out there's ways of getting the screw fasteners out of brick fast too.
How is any of this free? Just don't lie to us.

This is incredible! I would like to live in a house like this. But I guess it would be more difficult in a colder climate, e.g. northern Sweden.
svenjohan 11 months ago

Thanks in advance.
ps: this is the best thing ever, EVER.

@Reverseflush AQUAPONICS my friend. its the next step. also look into adding activated charcoal to your soil it stops the leatch process.

Beam me up Scotty!

Can they go under -30 degres often, and is there a problem with snow during the spring?
Yimhere 1 year ago
@Yimhere Yes you may have to add a rocket mass wood stove to supplement your heat in super long periods with no sun. These do very well in cold climates. You might also have to add wind power to your solar power.
The snow turns to water you store for drinking.

@fatherofmy5 Sooooo are you really considering cooking and heating your water with crap fumes? Could you imagine makng a nice candle light dinner by cooking it with FARTS? So romantic, a panty dropper for sure!!!!
aaronyeager83 1 year ago 2
@aaronyeager83 Actually, methane gas (also in farts) is the gas used for stove top gas burners, and is similar to the gases butane (in lighters) and propane (in bbqs). The actual bad smell I imagine would be filtered out

Could you use desalination?
Desalination is a process where salt and other minerals are removed from sea water to produce potable water for drinking and irrigation. Many sea-going ships and submarines make use of this technology. The idea of desalination is a huge area of research all across the world. Several different ideas have been developed, such as nuclear-powered desalination and solar-power desalination.

Environmentalism is a broad philosophy and social movement regarding concerns for environmental conservation and improvement of the state of the environment. Environmentalism and environmental concerns are often represented by the color green.
Hosea22 1 year ago
Environmentalism can also be defined as a social movement that seeks to influence the political process by lobbying, activism, and education in order to protect natural resources and ecosystems. An environmentalist is a person who may speak out about our natural environment and the sustainable management of its resources through changes in public policy or individual behavior by supporting practices such as not being wasteful.
Hosea22 1 year ago
In various ways (for example, grassroots activism and protests), environmentalists and environmental organizations seek to give the natural world a stronger voice in human affairs.

Love this concept, many of these ideas i've already thought of, including using glass wine bottles as inulators - but maybe not possible even if recorked !? What about building one of these for the water - like an Arc instead - think of the movie 'Waterworld' , only aim for 'blue water' quality vessels to survive possible 2012 flooding

@sharkcellar Wouldn't they be getting used as a wall? Everyday? I agree recycling is a better use, but not all places have the facilities for doing so. So... building with them would be the next best thing IMO.
