@hurbt1980 i noticed that to. I seen this movie/doc many times and Jay(the guy in the f-18) Has to train in the 18 right away after the F-14 got retired. So im guessing they are using footage of that. Tho in later on, he is flying a 14 cockpit. Meagan the girl tho is in a F-14 cockpit.
f-5 has double cannons so it kills at close range,it is very agile cause it is very lightweight but it also has fewer ammunition than the F-14.
The F-14 has 2 seats=more crew=better,better radar,ranged missiles phoenix and falcon,more ammuniton and it is also faster thanks to it's engines and wings.But the only problem is that it is not manurelable enough to make extreme evasions so it's like a brick in the sky

Really? Methink it was 3 F5 vs 1 F 15. It's because the cost an F 15 is 3 F5s. so they put it in simulated combat, indeed the F5 downs the F15, at the cost of 2 F5. Just like the sherman vs the tiger tank in WW II. $ shermans will kill a tiger tank at the cost of 3 of the shermans.

Chill. I'm not dissing the F14. I'm saying it was never going to be as good a dogfighter as a small aircraft such as the F5. It's a BVR beast, as it was designed to be.
Lets not kid ourselves, any time an F14 out-dogfights an F5, the F5 has been flown very poorly! But I guess it makes sense to practive ACM against a more manouverable opponent.

It was f5E tigers they used in topgun but they called them the mig 28 which never was around, this was to cover up the production of an aircraft, F5E was smaller and alot more removable but nowhere near as deadly as the tomcat, just like the saying goes for the tomcat...... ANYTIME BABY!!!!
The f-14 is better. It was larger and had better long range systems. The f-18 is way cheaper. That is why the navy switched. Look up the price, maybe 2 or 3 f-18's to one f-14. You have to forget the cool movies and remember that the f-14 can shoot down 6 targets long before it sees them.(again, look it up) The f-5 in the video is a joke. (my favorite looking plane, though) They are used in America as nothing more than trainers.
@freewill51 The f5 in this video isn't a "joke", but rather a very competent export aircraft. Even in the config. that you see here, it will give the f14 a really good fight, and the f5 in its later (more powerful) iterations is simply a better air to air platform over the f14 (which would have a hard time today against many modern fighters at close distance, where an aircraft relies less on avionics). The F14 should've been retired in the late 80's or earlier- it was far too costly.
i agree that the f-5 is hardly a joke, but is not a better air-to-air then the f-14. the A+,B and D tomcats were just as good as the f-16s in the 300-350 knots range (dog fighting speeds) and f-16 were actually used for the dissimilar adversary role after the f-5s got way to dated...
I have a question, I like the F-14 basically because it looks really cool but I don't know a lot about them. My question is all the posts I see in F-14 vids say it's superior to the F/A 18, now does that mean if we went to war with iran we would lose the battle for air superiority because the F-14 from what everyone says is a superior plane.
no. by the numbers F-18 is a better weapon platform. its just F-14's have more swag, character, or whatever you call it. that cant be quantified in a spec, but when the enemy and pilot have more faith the F-14 will get the job done, it becomes "superior", even though the numbers say other wise. a good pilot that likes the F-18 would kill an F-14 any day. unless it was a boot pilot vs a salty pilot in the F-14. then the F-14 would win 99 out of 100 times.
Excellent video and great dogfighting! Only one issue tho...if you notice, some of the cut-away scenes from inside the cockpit of the adversary F-5 are actually from inside the cockpit of an F/A-18E SuperHornet. (Look at the aircraft color and the dog-toothed wings)...Not an F-5. Otherwise, great video!
