My favourite SD song. I got lucky to meet Mike Ness in the mid 90's before a show in France at Ris-Orangis, Le Plan. He was having a cup of tea and was very relax. I told him how much I like "Story Of My Life" and he replied that they would play it tonight! He was not very friendly that night...I guess he is like this, a tough guy who got a tough life! Thanks Mike for all your music.
There's always a first time.......I'm an old school punker, back from the Ramones days, New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, etc...., you will have many years ahead of you listening to one of the best punk/rock 'n roll bands in history, Mike Ness, a rare song writing and performer genius that few can match, still to this day the band I prefer to see live--and I've seen them all. Rock On Good People!
First im going to say, what the hell is wrong with you that you would look up a video just to hate on it....is your dog not horny today or something? okay now onto the meat and potatoes of this hatefest Social D has been around alot longer than Green Day and although I like Green Day I owe my life to Social oh and why would you compare the two ones pop punk and the other is Rockabilly go hide in your closet and never come out!
Hey, I like Green Day too, but Social Distortion began in 1978 and gained fame in the early '80's, while Green Day formed in 1987. So how can Social D be rippin off Green Day? Get your facts in order!
Are you crazy?? social distortion way predates Green Day. And I also bet Green Day would cite them as a MAJOR influence hands down. You would be surprised the bands that have been influenced by Social Distortion. They are one of the bands that will never receive critical acclaim but have greatly influenced rock and roll music as we know it today.
His music is life. In all it's glory and sorrow. God bless you Mike! Not nabbing on a cliche but Johnny Cash and Social Distortion surely belong to that tortured and faithful group of storytellers and prophets that have come not quitetly through the ages. That's my salute to you. Of grattitude.
I love the formua for a Social Distortion song, Establish a riff, short into solo/ melody, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo (very similar to the melody), bridge, verse chorus. They keep coming back to the same riffs to make the different parts of the song sound familiar instead of a completely new thing
They're in Europe right now, specifically Madrid tonight. I'll be there.... "Stand up strong......" Wonder if they'll play this (after the two times seeing them in the US without them playing it)
Dennis Dannell actually died when White Light White Heat White Trash was in production. This song was added at the last minute as a tribute to him. Or so they say... either way, it's a great song and the words are just right. I played this song alot when My dad passed away.
Actually the song "On Angel's Wings" is the tribute to Dennis Dannell. He died a few years after this album came out. In fact he was still alive on Live @ The Roxy which came out after this.
I thought this song was written for Dennis Danell after he passed away? Yet that looks like him in this video. (guitarist) I will ALWAYS LOVE THIS BAND. I saw them play a bunch at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles back in 1983-84.
The Jesus of punk-rock. He played with a drummer for Victorian Pork, D.O.A., Pointed Sticks, The Subhumans (of Canada), Randy Rampage, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Descendents, Brown Sound, Red Hot Chili Peppers (in 1986), Weirdos (one San Francisco show), Fear, Floorlords, Samhain, Danzig, The Four Horsemen and most recently, Social Distortion.
I have it in my Will....that this song gets played at my Funeral...along with So Lonely by the Police....and of course The Funeral by Band of Horses....why not go out with a BANG!!
I think Mike Ness is a good person and social distorsion is an awesome rock n roll band. In my country (spain) a lot of musicians (and people in general) sucks cos they says 'we respect belivers' when they really are an hypocrites. Thanks DeaDHEaVEN0 for posting this song.
I have this song but I also had it with different lyrics...Welfare mother drink yourself to sleep while silently your children weep...does anyone out there know what I am talking about and if you do..What album was that on??
Social Distortion and Mike Ness, was such a big influence in my life! It gave me a direction in my life, yes i´m under the influences of S.D. and the whole Rock´n Roll history!
And people think I must be sad existing as an Atheist. It must be harder trying to reconcile all this nonsensical dogma. I have always been a Social D fan, and songs like this are why. "Sometimes I try so hard to understand the things You do..." The answer is this, "God's only excuse is that he doesn't exist." Keep on punk rockin' Social D. and don't give a fuck what angels and immaginary entities think.
Well said Social D is fucking great I flew from philly to LA to see them at the house of blues in orange county i went the night before saw the show and flew home the same nite to be back to work......and id do it again they are amazing live
I live less than a half hour from the house of blues. I went because I heard they were going to be playing, and I got a tribute band instead..I envy you greatly.

So I'm sure that they'd listen to Social D and just hear loud, crash, bang music.
I think that what I'm trying to say is that we all have different tastes. It's a class song, plus it'll piss loads of people off having this at a funeral.
EzekielJazz 3 years ago 5
How would it piss off people?
JohnZackarias 3 years ago
Because there's lots of people that don't have the same attitude as I/we do to music, they'd rather listen to groups like ABBA, light, fluffy songs to make them feel happy, which I guess is fine if that's what you like.
EzekielJazz 3 years ago

EzekielJazz 3 years ago
This song is a light, fluffy song to make people happy. It has no chock value.
JohnZackarias 3 years ago
I would agree that it has no real shock value, but I wouldn't class it as light and fluffy!
EzekielJazz 3 years ago
Not in terms of funeralmusic, but I'm pretty sure your relatives, friends and family wouldn't mind this song being played at all.
JohnZackarias 3 years ago
Actually, your probably right. My comment about pissing people off was a bit dumb. I hope it doesn't piss them off at all, I hope they love the song like I love it!
EzekielJazz 3 years ago
Heh, well...
I wouldn't say it's dumb, because I know pretty much what you meant. I just like starting discussions, see.
As for my funeral, I don't know whether or not I'd pick a "standard" funeral song. As long as it means something to me I'll go for it.
JohnZackarias 3 years ago
What would you class as a 'standard' funeral song?
The other song I've always fancied having was The Manic Street Preachers version of Raindrops keep falling on my head. I'd love to think everyone would sing along to it, but I suppose I'd be dead so I'd never know!
EzekielJazz 3 years ago
Standard funeral song as in cello, violin...Slow and soft, you know. Extremely slow and soft. Depressing, rather than uplifting.
Oh, I'll check out that song.
Personally, I'd like for Sorrow by Bad Religion to be played for mine..
JohnZackarias 3 years ago
Sorrow ... excellent song. I've only heard a handful of Bad Religion songs and that is my favourite of them. Can you recommend any of their CDs?
EzekielJazz 3 years ago
Yeah, Sorrow is really good. Awesome melodic lines.
For less melodic hardcore punk and more "Soft" punkrock, I guess you should check out No Substance or The New America.
The Gray Race is great too, and I think you'd like The Empire Strikes First.
The last two albums I mentioned are probably two of the most diverse.
