Those wrist straps must have quite a high resistance, because earthing yourself to a plug's earth is dangerous...you should hook it onto the case to keep you and the case in balance
If you connect to the case, the case needs to be plugged into the socket (switched off) so you are still connected to the earth in the property, so the case is between the supply and you.
Yeah there is a lot of controversy over static. Some say it doesn't happen, some say you do it when the PSU plugged in and off, some say plugging in and on, some say just connect it to the case, some say just touch the PSU...in the end I just put my strap to the case with no cable attached.
It's one of those things that is difficult to prove. I can't remember the last time I had a static shock but my sister gets several per day. Any kind of prevention is better than doing nothing IMHO
Can someone tell me, should I build my own computer? because I do have a good understanding of computers and how their put together, also I have done it before, but is it really worth it?
It is often not much cheaper if you build your own PC, but you can choose which software you put on it. I almost bought a Dell PC, but they insisted on including Microsoft office [included in price] and McAfee security suite [included in price], neither of which I wanted on my PC. I looked at a few other manufacturers and they also came with preinstalled software that I did not want, so I ended up building my own ;-)
with that amount of ram, and that graphics card, processor and everything else, a 700w power supply is kinda letting everything down a bit. try going for a 950w and the computer will be a hell of a lot better
you dont have to pull all of the case side. you will have to pull one so you can have an access to the whole computer and it is much easyer and safe too so when your going tho enter the grafics card it will be easy to put when the other side of the case is not moved... thats what i am gussing soo.. i dont know.. because i have building one (i7-990x) at my house and i didnt have to move the side that i put the mainboard on it and it works.. also my case is a medume-large case and i like it ..
I got most of the parts from a supplier that does not sell direct to the public. I just told them what processor and amount of ram I wanted and they supplied all the components.
I could not buy a machine with this specification without getting a DELL machine with loads of preinstalled software that was no good for me. They also charged you for the software as you could not remove it from your order! I use the PC for video editing mainly!
can i get the exact parts you use including the cpu, motherboard, ram, graficscard, hdd, optical, case, psu, ect. and for the psu, i live in amirica so is there an amirican version so i can plug it in?
You should be able to get the same parts anywhere in the world, the only difference will be the PSU or sometimes just the lead to the PSU. I think that an American lead came with the PSU as well as the three pin British one. Some PSU's have a selector switch to choose either 230v or 110v
@killyrm34300 Coolermaster HAF 922 case GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R Motherboard Intel core I7 920 processor Reaper OCZ HPC DDR3 Ram Stealth extreme PSU MSI 1gb Graphics card 2* 1TB western digital hard drives Windows 7 DVD burner I think that is everything!
Hello mate, this video is excellent, really appreciate you taking the time to share it with us. I have to build an i-7 with solid state HDD next week for a mates tv production company and I was wondering if you had any recomendations for places to get the mo-bo/processor? Not sure where will be the cheapest and the most customer friendly? Thanks for any help you can send my way!
I like very much the video series. They are accurate and give emphasis to the details. Of course a user can face other setup issues such as BIOS specific settings at the end of any construction, but troubleshooting isn't the purpose of the videos. So, for a PC building the videos are very ok. So...Bravo. :-)
Cool. I don't mean to flood you with lots of questions lol, but I'm looking to build a PC that's good for SD/HD video capture (480p/720p), as well as video editing. Have you got any idea how much I'll be looking at for something like that? I wont be playing top end games, at least not at first, so video capture and software is pretty much my only priority for the machine. Got any reccomendations?
No problem. I built this computer for editing HD movies and it is awesome, I never play any games. If I were you I'd check the minimum recommended spec for the software that you will be using to edit the video and then try and get a computer slightly better than what they recommend. I almost bought a dell, but it came with load of software that I did not want, but still had to pay for. I recommend building your own, then it only has the software on it that you need!
about the anti-static rist band u do know u can simply touch a metal object like a door handle and yes it is true ur cloth can still build static so what ever i never used ani of that and i lost count of the pcs i build in the last couple of years and never really happaned...
I have a friend that crosses the train track in front of moving trains, he has done it 999 times. One day his luck will run out and he'll be killed by the train, the same logic can be applied to wearing an anti-static wrist band ;-)
will this set up be any good? All ill use it for is Css TF2 and L4D and mabye some of the new recent games coming out processor- phenom II x4 955 - £107 motherboard- gigabyte 770tu-d3 - £55 memory- corsair xms3 - £65 hard drive- sam f3 500gb - £33 graphics- 8800gtx (ebay) - £50 case- antec 300 (+1x120mm fan) - £55 power- cm silent pro 600 - £70 cooler- arctic freezer 7 - £16 = £451
The link to part two is at the end of the first video, you just click on the link in the video. I can't post a link in the comment section as they do not work.
@SmerFarmor 99.9% it won't make any difference. But I wouldn't risk £1200 on that 0.1%. You can always touch the case if you have a metal one... either way better safe then sorry
Exactly, the whole point of building a computer is to build one that will last you for years before you even need to think about upgrading.
As for filling a 1TB hard drive- it is fairly easy if you edit high definition videos. I filled my 500gb hard drive on my last computer in a few months with HD video footage.
Hey, I'm planning on buying - AMD Phenom X4 Black edition Gigabyte GA-M720-US3 650w Titan 12CM Neon Power Supply Seagate 500GB Barracuda Microsoft Windows 7 Kingston Technology 2GB DDR2 RAM HD5770 1GB GDDR5 Graphics Card For my 16th birthday, but I'm wondering will the motherboard fit in my current non- cooled case without having to buy an upgrade? Also, will all the components run together? I'm kinda new to building computers and don't want to mess it up when I buy. -Thanks
I bought them from a trade supplier. I had a good look around on the internet first, but there was no single website that could offer a good deal on all the components!
Good luck with it. If you have a local computer shop I would get a price there for everything as they might give you a discount if you buy the lot in one place. Thanks for the comments!
@ultimatehandyman it sounds cool (im 14 years old :D ) but my onkel can make a com. there is like yours :D but it would be much more i think 1500 $ :(
Also, do you buy your gear from a single vendor? It seems like there's nothing quite like newegg over here in Europe as far as I can tell. If I want to gather all the hardware I would need for my dream rig, I'm going to have to get them from multiple stores. Either that or wait for them to order the missing parts specifically themselves :(
Would rubber gloves (surgical-type ones for instance) keep static going from your hands onto the components? Rubber is a great electricity insulator after all isn't it?
Static would be a non-issue and so would greasy fingerprints, voilà!
You need an i7 compatable Mother Board. Intel changed the socket type for the new 'i' range. If you are running a duo core, you probably have a socket 775. The i7 requires a socket 1366. A good choice for this would be the MSI X58M which costs around £124.
To be honest this is the first case where I have not had to use screws to secure the drives into the case. It is a really useful design feature and they are all held in position securely. A desktop will not normally be moved much though once it is in position that is it!
I have a dumb question, can I remove my due core processor for my existing motherboard and replace it with the i7 core processor chip? will it fit or do I need a specific motherboard in order to be able to do that. i have an intel socket 775 currently with windows xp 32 bit
I personally need the speed mostly to run 5 adobe programs at the same time I do a lil video and audio editing nothing crazy though. those antic static shock bands can be bought where?
hey man I also build computers and you have made the right choose by my thought, and a great time to do it because no decent computer build tutorial has been put up in over 5 months i think? anyway defo 5 stars and subscribe nice one m8 :)
I set all 5 videos to upload over night, but only the first one uploaded. I'm trying again now. When they all upload I will add annotations and a link to the next video.
nice tut but id rather not plug my self into an electrical socket lol

Would rubber gloves (surgical-type ones for instance) keep static going from your hands onto the components? Rubber is a great electricity insulator after all isn't it?
Static would be a non-issue and so would greasy fingerprints, voilà!

Warhawk...
You need an i7 compatable Mother Board. Intel changed the socket type for the new 'i' range. If you are running a duo core, you probably have a socket 775. The i7 requires a socket 1366. A good choice for this would be the MSI X58M which costs around £124.

Thanks, you are welcome!

@ warhawk
I'm no computer expert, but I'm pretty sure that you will need a new mother board.

i7 processors are only supported at this point by the motherboard socket 1366.
There is also a chance u have to upgrade your RAM due to the 1366 socket not supporting allot of Ram classifications.

how much does all the parts run altogther?
warhawk 2 years ago
@ warhawk
It was about £1000 for all the parts (1,569.30 USD). It has been well worth the money as I need the speed when editing HD video.
ultimatehandyman 2 years ago
I personally need the speed mostly to run 5 adobe programs at the same time I do a lil video and audio editing nothing crazy though. those antic static shock bands can be bought where?
warhawk 2 years ago
Most computer shops sell the anti-static wrist bands or ebay has plenty of them.

I set all 5 videos to upload over night, but only the first one uploaded. I'm trying again now. When they all upload I will add annotations and a link to the next video.
