Well if a modern "enlightened" nations can even have such a discussion at this day and age shows that ignorance is still present and how. Discrimination is discrimination. People are born equal but "advanced societies" like to be subtly racist but boast about the freedoms of their democracies. What a joke!!!
Serbia has 2 million albanians we could use help expelling back to Albania, maybe France can help us with that. Anyways those gypsies need to get shipped back.
" Everyone should respect the rule of law "...then why is the un-elected kommission allowed to bail-out Greece and break EU law ( the "parliament" was not consulted ) AND disregard the Maastricht treaty ? Why were the unelected Kommissars allowed to ilegally get involved in the second Irish referendum ?
Rumania and Bulgaria should never have been allowed to join the EU BEFORE fighting corruption and discrimination against the Roma. Now it's too late...they are in thanks to Olli Rehn & Co.
in addition (to the ast post i hope it will be approved) i have to say that Bulgarian people i the history has proven to be very nondiscrimination. we dont discriminate the Roma for who they are but for what they do which is practicably live on the others expense. they drop from school for absences and low score, they discriminate Bulgarians more then we do them, they are lazy. the problem with them is completely different and the spokesmen obviously haven't done their homework so to speak.
I'm Bulgarian and i have to respond to the comments made by one of the speakers. Yes Roma ppl are discriminated here but its not because they are minority its because they dont want to be integrated. i have few Roma friends and i know for a fact that roma parents prohibit their kids to talk with bulgarian kids, they dont sent them to school. romas here go to work only to restore their rights for aid. historically they have always been that way. granted that dont apply to all but to most of them.
I am Bulgarian and I do not trust any politicians in Bulgaria and the EU! Liars and arrogant thefts! Integrate Gipsies in your own houses and cottages! Gipsies are paid by the government of Bulgaria 1 billion Euro per year only for social needs. Do not lecture us on anything! You are much more cruel than the former USSR!
The problem in Europe is that there are lots of fine human rights conventions and instruments - but ineffective institutions and courts to enforce them. It takes ten years to get a human rights case to the Court of Human Rights. Without effective enforcement of human rights conventions - they become nothing more than fine words on paper.
Excellent discussion. Pity that Mrs Göncz could not explain in detail what kind of Roma integration was done in Hungary in the last 20 years (She sais a lot which is a total lie). In reality it is a total failure and disaster ... The idea of a civil war between gipsy and hungarians have already been mentioned as a possibility several times in the media. As a result the exterme right has never been stronger in Hungary than today.
Nobody should have State discrimination for OR against. If people do not threaten, coerce or steal from others and respect property rights, they should be left alone. If they do, no excuses or special favours.
Freedom of association is a superior freedom, even over the State's conceit, so people should not be forced to "welcome" anybody, nor be forced to "integrate".
State coercion in either direction is an obscenity.
