also scott vestal is inventive and is very smooth; single string or melodic or scruggs style. bottom line all are great banjo players Z(musicians), thankfully we have them.
pretty melody. I got to talk(2nd time in tucson) to tony when he was here a few weeks ago.inventive player, unorthodox right hand fingerings in his tunes but that is fine; whatever it takes to capture the sound he wants.Bela's current playing is experimental(IMO) tony's is more traditional. I think alison brown has about the right balance but that is my perspective.
Do we have to compare every banjo player in the world with Bela Fleck? YES we do because there is no other player alive than can teach us what a banjo can really do. This guy here is really really good, but at the end of the day hes bouncing about some folky scales, and yes hes brilliant, but NO-ONE absolutely no-one can even think about being NEARLY as talented as Bela..he is the master of this instrument,
Doug, there is somthing to be said about keeping with tradition. Folky scales? I've seen Bela Fleck 4 times and Tony 4 times, gotta say that I would rather see Tony anyday. Tony's songs appeal to me more than most of those mindless 14 minute long jams. Way to go Bela, he started playing the banjo and now we have to compare every banjo player to him until the end of time. Can't we just say that they are both good? Is Labron better than Michael?
@dimionix Can I take your test teacher? How about we start by making it a little easier for me and letter the choices a-There, b-Their and c-They're? Of the three choices your present, I'll pick c-They're. Did I pass? You don't have to answer. I know I is smart.
@dimionix Courtesy and demeanor will help you go a long way in this world. Being overly critical about the grammar skills of those who post opinions on YouTube serves little purpose unless it's supplying your ego with a personal boost. In any case, you shouldn't do that. Bad teacher or wannabe!!!
@timmiet47321 Now that, was well written. It would be a sad day for me if I recieved an ego boost from correcting one's grammar on youtube bra. P.S. Relax.
@dimionix I'm spending a few moments watching and listening to Tony Furtado. I'm very much relaxed thank you. My comments to you only serve to satisfy my hunger for a little bit of innocent banter. This aint gonna rile me none. Peace out.
@timmiet47321 You're totally right here. Nothing more petty than the evasive tactic of focusing on grammar in any online situation. Usually the perps for this kind of thing have tiny egos and minds. It's a narrow world where the only measure of "education" is how sure your fingers are on the keyboard.
@dimionix O yea damn right I am, And "you are" a fucking loser with no life getting on youtube to knock my spelling. whoohooo buddy have fun with your hand tonite!! btw I wasnt hating on you at all I was hating on the "basketball thugs"
Yes Bela is THE player who has taken the banjo further than anyone. He also hears music in a way no one else does. He has HIS way...but theres no reason whatsoever to compare other players to him. Not a competition. I chose to go the direction with the banjo that I have because that is what I hear for. Not the best analogy but, Steve Vai can probably play circles around Ry Cooder, but is there a reason to compare the 2? Me, I like Ry, but some like Steve. Apples and oranges,IMO.
