Both artists have amazing voices and are different from each other. Comparing them vocally is like comparing apples to oranges. What they did have in common, was that they both sang/wrote with honesty and depth.

Both lived completely distinct lives and had different events happen to them. Their confrontation depended on their circumstances.

That is very true! I remember, and I have never liked Shakira... but around the same time this song came out, so did Shakira´s first album. In Latin America, she was huge, her songs had meaningful lyrics and she had her natural dark hair. She would make pop rock protesting feminists songs, play her acoustic guitar and say smart things when interviewed.
