I was trying really hard to get a story flowing, it´s too bad i didn´t get the "flow" i guess. Where would you tie it together, in order to make a storyline. The original story was based on a bunch of true story skits put together. I tried to tie it up, i guess, with that one scene at the end. I am curious to know more about filmmaking, so I willing to take some criticism. I am planning to go back and do some more films. Hopefully take a course or two onces i graduate.
no fucking shit bro!!! dude your film is related and linked to my bands videos!!! thats brutal. Nice afro 3:40....8:10 berry rutal. 8:58 i think would have been nice with 180 angles between you and the computer and random cut betweens of your roommate.
Idk. It seemed like you were trying a little too hard. I mean, sure the angles and the black & white were cool, but this film seemed so unfamiliar and tough to sit through. it didn't flow. Good effort though. Tisch is a tough admit. I just sent my portfolio out last week.
Wow I can't believe you didn't get in. The film displayed an understanding of storytelling more so in the beginning than the rest of the film. The only explanation I have as to why you might not have gotten would be that the plot was not clear to the admissions office at NYU.
The cell-phone ringing scene... I know you're trying to make it annoying, that's good and clear. But still, way too long in terms of screen time (you can make screen time shorter to portray longer plot time).
I hope your talent keeps on developing, and it would be good to see you incorporate serious, social-aware references into your film as you grow, whatever your genre will be. It's good to see some real talent after seeing fame-seeking wannabe garbage all the time.
Clearly, the inconsiderate roommate (in the hat), though asks "am I imposing", does not get the message that the other guy is too polite to say anything... The characters are clearly expressed.
I didn't understand the purpose of them listening to the neighboors fighting, however. It's an interesting and well-shot scene, keep it, but develop it to how it ultimately relates to the plot in terms of resolution (finally a connection between the roommates, right?)
Good sense of storytelling through scale (that is mediums, closeups to express the idea, etc.)When a friend comes to talk to the other roommate in Spanish and they both look at the roommate, who is being awkward and say "Que pasa with your roommate" or something... That's really, really funny :) And that pan between there faces right before the "Que Pasa" line. Nice !!!
It's awesome that you focussed on characters and the inner world of the environment, resisted all temptations to stay away from car chases and amateur fight scenes, which are impossible to do within the budget, but the wannabes always try. The type of school Tisch is, that's what they look for - human aspects of writing.
The dramatic tension and conflict of interests/values is CLEARLY there, it is hillarious.
Black and white is a good choice here... With the given budget, you probably used a prosumer/consumer camera, and while others use color settings on it, they inevitably turn out amateur.-looking (bad color and all) , if you know what I mean. B/w - way to go here.
The editing may not be 100% perfect, (i.e., some cuts are too quick, like the chair sliding back, the eye looking sideways... then, the cuts between medium-long shot while the guy is looking at the two spanish-speaking friends, and the extreme close-up of his eyes, is too abrupt in terms of distance... it throws off the feeling of space. But I SEE that it's there, that's the awesome part.)
Hell yes dude. I saw this RIGHT when it was posted and never got to comment, and now look you have like two pages full of comments. All I can say is see you in Marty's town!
SUPER realista turo! te lo digo por experience. me encanto los close-ups y el efecto del black and white. haha mi roommate tambn se identifico bastante. espero q sea tu entrada a NYU..t deseo suerte
Art...q bueno que vas a ir a Tisch and become what you love the most. You amazed me since the first time I met you for having a great passion for what you do. You have my total support...I cant wait to go to the Oscars with Jean and You Kisses Tia Sandra
review> actor/director Arthur virzi is back with Roomates, a collection of short stories portraying the sometimes strange relation between 2 college buddies. Some of the shots reminded me of those used by a young Orson Welles in his 1941 debut film (Citizen Kane anyone?). Not the best amateur film of the year but certainly the funniest and most enterteining film by this young and acclaimed director. Eduardo Young, the director's public relations agent.
Man arturo ta bueniiisima...la verdad es que no hay mucho que decirte de malo...osea la actuacion is really good for being disk a skit...so no se puede criticar mucho...ta muy bueno que sea en blanco y negro y esos disk roommates after every scene...me gusto mucho como it was all really simple...u never tried to make it extravagant ni nada...y sobre todo props for the part of talking in spanish...tuvo muy buena esa parte donde se veia la perspectiva de tu roommate...chuchon

Did you get accepted to the program? If so what were your grades like, if you don't mind me asking?
AlexL20 3 years ago
I did not get accepted. I had a 3.9 gpa and this short little film. Not sure what I did wrong.
:-S
Hopefully I´ll be going to another school in the east coast and then try again in one year.

Hope you god in.I think that you have a good artistic sense for timing, that would be the rhythm of editing. Your ideas are clearly there.

Blitzkrieg Bop! Jolly good work, old fellow. And that angry boyfriend in the other room has the sexiest voice known to man.
