  • Speechless..what a beast

  • This guy went tom my highschool with my band teacher.....makes me work harder on the trombone knowing that he walked the same halls I do.

  • hes gotta b on crack

  • I play a Bass Trombone in my high school, but I also have a Trombone at my house that I've used since 5th grade. Which would you recommend for Jazz?

  • @DarkRaven008912 a medium or small bore horn would be more common in jazz but it's all about what kind of sound you want. There are bass bone players that also solo very well (Bill Reichenbach comes to mind) There are also guys (like Slide Hampton) that use a large bore tenor, but I'd say for solo or small group jazz, bass bone is very rare.

  • Michael! its always great to hear you and hope to hear u live some day. Please let me know if you make it out to Los Angeles ever.

  • bravo

  • Oh yes. Thats what I call trombone playing.

  • sounds incredibly beautiful. your tone is why people go out and buy whatever they can..in pursuit of a tone like yours, sir. beautiful.

  • That high C gets me everytime. Nicely done Mr. Nelson. That high C is a breeze. lol

  • Somewhere over the rainbow?

  • that was insane range and i love the song its some pretty cool stuff

  • ur amazing...

  • the f the the high f was absolutely amazing. right now i'm working on that, i can almost nail it. its so hard getting those high and double high notes in tune. every inch matters up there on your side.

  • no it doesn't... hardly matters at all where you put your slide up there, the harmonics are so close together, it's all chops anyway

  • @Glooomp I can promise you hes still working very hard to keep his positions accurate up there.

  • how can i get the tabs?

  • Use your ear and watch his slide. That's all the hope you've got.

  • If it helps any, I think he's in the key of F

  • Fness confirmed.

  • THAT SHIT WAS ULTRA LEVEL!!!

  • Just plain out amazing.

  • freaken AWSOME!

  • wuohOO!! that was sexy. aha 10 out of 10

  • ggaaaaahhhhhhhh..... that was amazing...

  • wow! awesome!

  • who else noticed that it kinda sounds like "somewhere over the rainbow"... i'm so excited i get to play in front of him and have him as a clinician at the jazz fest hear in two and half weeks

  • it is over the rainbow lol

  • Such a gorgeous lush rich tone... very Urbie Green.

  • I transposed (and was actually able to play, except for the last 20 seconds) this a few months ago...it is so much fun to play. I don't have the range for it right now, though...damn marching band! kills your chops every time!

  • would you mind sending it?

it would be very appreciated and save me some time if you could, if not it's cool.

  • You think that's written ? I could bet this is improvisation

  • i know it's not written...

    i'm not stupid.

he said he transposed it lol

  • Oooh could you send me aswell please realy need it. or some music for over the rainbow. :) cheers

  • Dude your frikin amazing at trombone. thats all i can say.

  • SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW! *.*

    liked it =D

  • You are amazing! Keep it up!

  • i think i've fallin in love.. keep sliding..

  • You played "Somewhere over the Rainbow", haha. You're a beast. You're the best part of the Hornheads

  • im still listening to your christmas album and its april lol

  • ooo man, i remember playing over the rainbow in my middle school jazz band, great song, of course the lead trombone player back then was nowhere as good as u XDD. ur freaking awesome, my music teachers been playing the trombone for YEARS, and even he cant play as clean and smoothly as you, very well done

  • i've played trombone for 17 years and that's the most controlled i've ever seen someone play the trombone.

    Very well done.

  • do u have anything i can use to practice to play faster and higher

  • I believe I could probably speak for Michael when I say:

    "PRACTICE!!"

That is what Gary Herbig keeps saying, and about everybody I've ever spoken to, who can really play. . .

  • better than David Steinmeyer, maybe?

  • They are different

Steinmeyer has better tone, but does not play anything like this guy.

For crazy good improv I would pick Nelson, but for a ballad I would personally want to listen to Steinmeyer.

  • The whole "better than" thing does not translate into the world of art and music.

I'd say that Michael is supremely gifted at trombone and leave it at that.

Why try to set up rosters of this player is before that player? This stuff is of absolutely no use unless you are a music contractor.

    Chris Tune

  • you are so crazy :)) awesome player.great job man

  • mad chops...I hear endless hours of practice throughout your life in your tone. nice.

  • Hey, what is good mic set up for recording music live on the computer? The voice mics tend to be condensing mics and cut out most of the dynamic range.

  • This was done with the camcorder and dropped in imovie.(not a great option) I use protools in my home studio with an AKG414 and DBX tube mic pre. There are so many different ways to record, I wouldn't know what to recommend and it's not my expertise. You might want to ask a recording engineer.

  • Hey Michael. Great playing. I'm a freelance bone player in Los Angeles. Enjoy your music immensely. Sure hope you put up more.

    Chris Tune

  • @Bone2BWildMusic, I have been studying as a recording engineer four 4 years and I have to say that the AKG 414's are a wonderful trombone microphone. I usually place the microphone about 40 degrees off the bell and about 3 feet away though. This set up has never failed me. Also, the 414's have a large number of settings with regards to frequency response and dynamics so they can capture several different trombone tones and/or styles successfully.

  • Good bone recording mics are hard to find. Usually I find the mics that do well on male voices, and particularly speaking voices do well on bone. There is a popular Shure mic (a dynamic, believe it or not!) that I think is called a 600 or a 6. You see it in radio stations all the time. . right in front of the person broadcasting their voice

The sound guys on one of my gigs used it. Sounded great.

  • Man, I've got to say that you have insane talent. I first saw you play live after the first Hornheads cd came out, and have purchased every cd since. For those of you who don't know who this guy is, there's no question he's one of the best, if not THE best, jazz trombonist in America. Keep up the great work.

  • B-E-A-utiful.

  • awesome! nice dude!

  • great....

    excellent melody

    ''over the raibow''

  • where do you find the music for trombone solos? (unless this was improvised) cause I can never find any.

  • This was improvised around the melody. I really don't know where to send you for solo trombone music, but I will say that I got much of my musical vocabulary from transcribing my favorite trombone players. It's a great workout for your ears and chops!

  • hm.. nice clean, smooth sound, but although your technical skills are really good..i think in some parts of the solo they just don't fit.. like you just wanted to show what your able to...but all in all fine!..

And to the rest of those guys wanna know how to reach an high c.. ..

Use just half of the time thinking about it to practise and you'll see soon, it ain't that unpredictable.

  • How exactly do you reach that High C??!!

  • That was fantastic, now i want to learn how to play like that! SHEET MUSIC?

  • Sorry, no sheet music You might want to try transcribing it. It's a great way to expand your ears and learn some new licks!

  • I hear the influence of many trombone masters in this man's playing. Congratulations on ascending to a very high level of playing, sir. You are a treasure.

  • thanks! you are to kind.

  • Hey Ginkman99, actually it was a high a C. but I'm not trying to say anything man. Respect!(Just saying really)

  • Do you have a recording of this I could download?

    I really love this

  • I couldn't find the original file. I might do a better recording of this sometime. If I do, I'll let you know.

  • sheet music??

  • nope, sorry. I was just kind of winging it...

  • dude

  • TEACH ME!

  • High B flat

  • that was great!!! i've had to play that solo once. not like that though. far from it.

  • That was Great! No wonder they think all us trombonists are a bunch of show-offs.

  • Vry nice range.

  • Grate!

  • I liked it :D

It was kinda funny cause he went flat on the last note.

And not because he changed notes.

  • Holy crap. I think i jumped when you sceamed the high note! what note was that?

  • The first one was a C above the normal high C, the second that he hit during the melody up an octave was a G I believe and the he ended on an A...

Oh... and the solo is magnificent.

  • great job. nice sound and awesome high range. very well done. 5/5

  • hey this is great...after i heard this i just played around w/ it some...yes as a kansan this makes me proud...and now im easily hitting those double f's and im 17...so in other words thanks for the motivation to work on my high range lol

  • oh also i played this at a regional talent show and took first playing it on a King 3B trombone

  • Very awesome. Love your high range and doodle tonguing. I hopw someday to be able to do that too.5/5

  • I enjoy your stream of endless music phrasing. Hakan B

  • bravazo

  • i love this song so much! you play it so well

  • god damn

  • VERY NICE!!!! MAN YOU GOT IT

  • How do you reach higher notes and maintain a full tone?

  • I suppose it's several factors. I spent a lot of time in college working on range and flexibility and building up my diaphragm. I use a mouthpiece that isn't too deep and has a V cup. (giardinelli 4M) and it may be my mouth structure as well, since I've always had pretty good high chops.

  • your doodle tounguing is sick, but im pretty sure you knew that already.

  • very nice, love to hear ytou on bass trombone

  • Nice work man - great security in the high range! The intonation is pretty spot on, even the altisimmo stuff. I think a good mic will do even more justice to your playing - you are using a normal computer voice mic right? Hope to see more videos from ya.

  • How did he ruin it? This cat is sick. I wish I could play half as good as this guy. Seriously Mike keep the videos coming. I love listening to you and hornheads. Hope to hear you live some day.

  • sorry, everyone has different taste..that was rude of me

  • u ruined it at the end man...

  • ahh yes, Over the rainbow on trombone is truly amazing. You are an amazing trombone player. Frank Rosolino played this song with Stan Kenton and also did an amazing job. I think you two are just great.

  • Wow! Keep 'em coming...awesome playing.
