@smokinbill jaja of course, and i think von trier and merrit are kind of the same person, both are dark but they are also very sensitive, they use irony to deal with the world and both are great artists
Stephen Merritt is openly a dark sort of depressed person, while the interviewer seems like the kind of guy who would be all cheesy and put on a fake smile, and then go home and feel sick of himself and drink himself to sleep.
Man, that host SERIOUSLY reminds me of a character I made up when I was nine years old. My character, Bob Schneider, was this obese African-American TV host who had a addiction to Diet Coke. He was the host of a chat show that NO ONE watched and yet it ended up being the most popular show in America XD
@giorgiomichello He's good friends with the author of the books. They tried to get the author on the show but he couldn't do it and asked Stephin to fill in. Apparently Stephin stayed up the whole night before this interview, haha- they talk about it in the documentary Strange Powers.
The interviewer makes Stephen look more butch than ever. I can almost imagine Mr. Merritt walking out with a blonde bomb shell on his arm, hands all over her tushy, while the newsman murmurs, "Oh god, he is so DREAMY."
great man... goofy host. steven should shoot his agent for even making him get up in the morning for such trite tube fluff. what a score though for future generations,
bebrasha and I are on the same page - I was going to quote that - and it's true - the singular applause at the end is like the final brilliant indignity...for everybody.
Feel lucky to have stumbled on this. Stephen is a genius...
I don't know whose idea it was to schedule Merritt on this yucky morning show, but it is a stroke of genius, like a detournement of morning news shows. I love the singular applause at the end.
What a juxtaposition. You have the artificial "personality" who doesn't know how to interact with Merritt who would probably rather have sex with a woman than deal with this insincere chump.
S.M played the Crocodile in Seattle with the Fields and everyone applauded and he said: 'why are you cheering, we haven't even done anything yet.' It was hilarious.

Stephin is a fucking fantastic performer and i forget that sometimes... i think a lot about his songs and not as much on how great of an interpreter of music he is.
I think the point that fuckinghugetits was trying to make is not that he is gay in a oh man what a gay guy kinda thing, but more of a responce to the comment about the possibly homosexual news reporter
Expectedly, he's going to seem very out of place on a show like this. The awkwardness reminds me of the time Elliott Smith performed the opening to the that new Disney ride in Orlando, the Soulsucker. (that's not true actually but you get my point)
Not a dig on Merritt of course, I really respect his work. Just sucks what he has to go through to promote the music.

man this guy is glum all the time. I feel sorry for him. The Magnetic Fields are coming here but I don't think it's worth the $30 just to see him mope and do every song in an acoustic setting.
I think the interviewer is strong and much in control, considering the amount of interviewers who completely lost it during their interviews. Of course the tone is very light but this is a question of context and the type of program. Merritt is for once exactly doing what he aims to do when doing all these interviews which is promotion. This is pure promotion, I think Merritt should be happy with it. Of course, I love Merritt.
Stephin Merritt looks a bit like a young Alfred Hitchcock when he'd talk to the camera in those Alfred Hitchcock Presents intros. Search for it on YouTube.
