  • @mccarterjg Take an old Hummer H1 axle, they have a torsen rear and front diff ;)

  • @MrLowAltitude no i would pick the torsen over any other style locker but just stating the machine and molds and precision it takes for the pinions to all have the same tolerance to come in lock up contact at the same time in mass production, vs some sand blasted cast spider gears and a clutch pack and a spring.

  • @imaniket4u I think the power comes in by rotating the worm gears around the center axle, then the worm gears spin against each other if one wheel is going faster

  • @imaniket4u I think this is the diff on the tail shaft between the rear and front wheels. Basically a diff connecting 2 diffs :-)

  • this is normally used as a "Center" differential to control the torque split from front-to-rear in a AWD system.

    AM general uses them in the front & rear axles as well in the H1, which of course means riding the brakes if you lift a wheel under power.

  • @oilyear Could be if you want. It is used on axles as well. Hummer is a good example. This diff work as long as the sliping wheel has some traction. If the wheel is lifted, this diff becomes open with an important difference: You can reproduce the traction with brakes.

  • Good for you Teschtescht! I always appreciate truly educated people putting the "children" in place. The internet is rampant with nay sayers and people speaking of false truths. Although I am not a avionics engineer I am a new physician, so I can at very least grasp what you guys are talking about. It doesn't matter if its this or things in my field there are always those you'll have to correct...time....and time...and time...and time again. Bravo!

  • Here we have the proof that you don't know what you're talking about. It works NOT like every other differential!

    The difference is the use of worm gears instead of normal, straight cut planet gears. Worm gears have a self locking characteristic caused by the friction due to axial forces. So this is a fully automatic, pure mechanical self locking diff. Very fast and very though!

    Well, I think my educational level isn't that bad, probably better than yours. I work in a development department of a vehicle manufacturer and besides my 80% job I study electrical engineering. I also worked as a F/A-18 avionics technician for the Swiss Air Force. So there are a few things I know... ;)

    The self locking character of the diff.

    Worm gears are self-locking due to their friction. So this is a fully automatic, pure mechanical self locking diff.

    Very fast, reliable and tough! This is the reason Audis Quattro system is so good.

  • it's a regular differential... vry probably the development gone to on a cheaper system, like hypoid drive... that still the most expensive... and most difficult.... a helical gear even can be made in a homeshop...

    but as the weakest link was in the orig conception the shafts in the middle gears, in this the weakest the point where the small helicals are connecting to the mini spurs... probably it is for some toys...thanks

  • Thanks for clarifying. The video doesn't show the power input including the ring gear. The torsen can be mated with any type of ring gear including a hypoid if input shaft clearance is an issue. So the cost of a hypoid gear isn't a factor related to the Torsen. Mr. Gleason, who patented the Torsen differential in 1958, also had to invent hobbing machines thought to be impossible at the time. The Torsen isn't cheap to make & is very robust. It's used in racing cars & earth moving equipment.

  • floringguy, I am very happy to have been of any help. I don't know much about Mr. Gleason, but the little I do indicates he was a great genius. He solved the problem of slippage found in the standard differential that had illuded thousands of other great minds before him. To do it, he imagined a mechanism in his mind that makes no sense to most people even after they have seen it!! Amazing, the man & his achievement.

  • I was just reviewing a bit of information on the Tosen differential and realized I had made a mistake in a previous comment. The inventors name is Vernon Gleasman, not Gleason. Mr. Gleasman invented and patented the idea and later took it to a large manufacturer of gear components, the Gleason Works. The exact history is available on-line for anyone who is interested.
