My mix is shea butter, nutiva virgin coconut oil, castor oil, desert essence 100% aloe vera gel, and vanilla oil. If you dont want to mix yourself, i think beautiful curl's shea butter tonic at whole foods is a good substitute.
I DEFINITELY THINK IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO MELT THE SHEA BUTTER B4 MIXING BUT INSTEAD OF PUTTING IT IN THE MICROWAVE BOIL WATER , TURN HEAT DOWN TO A SIMMER AFTER IT GETS TO BOILING POINT. PUT THE SHEA BUTTER INTO A GLASS CONTAINER & PLACE THE GLASS CONTAINER INTO THE HOT WATER. MICROWAVING IS QICK BUT MAY TEND TO CHANGE THE QUALITY OF THE SHEA BUTTER. YOU'LL END UP W/A MORE NATURAL PRODUCT IF U ELIMINATE THE MICROWAVE. LOVE YOUR VLOGS BTW. THANX FOR INSPIRING US ALL 2 BE NATURAL & TRUE 2 OURSELVES!
where did you get the shea butter? there are different kinds of shea butters. i really want to do this mix, but i dont know which shea butter to use. where can you purchase it? why not put these in the info box? i dont understand...
@triniasha If it is very strong you can add essential oil drops of whatever smell you want. Just a few is enough, or else the smell will become overwhelming. If the shea smell is mild, just mixing it with coconut oil will overpower the shea smell.
I have tired it both ways melting and mixing and I find it has a better texture mixing. Scoop into you mixing bowl put your oils and mix the higher the mixer the softer it becomes- I actually looks like the butter and suger batter for cake
@bellemcky i actually did this at home the other day with shea, coconut oil and grape seed oil. Mixed it by hand and try to whip in some air but it came out pretty hard, very soild. but when you put your finget to it it melts a little and softens, I suggest you let it warm up in your hands before putting it in your hair
the mixer makes it smoother than it would be if mixed by hand....and it also makes it stay in that smooth consistency for a longer time than mixing by hand would!
This is JUST what I needed. Thank you so much for this video, RusticBeauty. Question: What is the name of the pomade you used and where did you get it?
I really need to know the name/brand of the coconut oil. I love coconut and have been trying to find cocnut oil everywhere. I have only found the "conditioner" that looks basically like grease. It is not the kind in the jar.
I will definately be trying this recipe since I bought a blender. I have shea and mango butter blend I'll use it with. I can't wait! Thanks Rustic Beauty! :-)
Can somebody help me out here. I just turned 18 a few months ago and I've been natural for 10 months now...whooo. lol. So im orderin everthing right now, and i wanted to know how much coconut oil should i order? I ordered 5lbs of shea butter but im not sure how much coconut oil i should order. Help!
yea! Your just like me. Except I turned 18 7 months ago so not too far off. I've been natural for 10 months so yeah us! So excited. Why don't you check out a whole foods store and just buy a jar. You don't need to go crazy with it. My mom makes her coconut oil so I just steal some of hers and I hardly ever use it except when i'm making a mix. Depending on the amount I generally use ....erm....half a cup. Again, just an estimate.
I'm just learning to figure my natural hair out and the shea butter mix seems interested... Can you please list the items you use to make up the mixer. Thx
I never melt my shea and it whips up nice and fluffy like cake icing.... I put raw shea in a kitchen aid mixer and mix.... just add addtional oils if you like... Nice and smooth.....
Rustic Beauty, thanks for the tips, I'm a newie and don't have a clue what Iim doing. What is oyin handmade burnt sugar? Where do I purchase and where do I purchase Vegetable Glycerin?
I don't know why I just realized your mixer has one blade lol!! But I definitely like you method of heating up the shea b4 mixing!! I have to try this on my deads, but I don't know exactly what all uses I could get out of it. I saw the results, and they are SEXYFUL!
Any suggestions 4 getting a smell like the oyin handmade burnt sugar pomade??? Curlmart is out of it, so I need an alternative essential oil or something, got everything else 4 this recipe.
RusticBeauty, thanks for inspiring me to try shea in your videos!!! Love shea products; but, had never bought it raw & wanted to try mixing it up for skin & hair care recipes. So many people complain abt the smell; so, I wanted to buy it in person so I could smell it 1st . Well, I am sooo excited! I just found & bought raw shea butter locally for the 1st time. I tried it w/ aloe vera gel for a braid-out & love it. My skin loves coconut oil & shea - can't wait to whip them together! Thx agn!
@RusticBeauty do you prefer the burnt sugar? If not the sugar what else would you recommend? Also would you add essential oils to add a fragrance or you like the smell of the product? I have yet to make it, I'm just really curious about it. My hair needs help lol
Making my mix now, used an empty cholesterol jar-hot water bathed the mixture then shook the container. I used half of the butters-n-bars shea butter, about 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil, a tablespoon of powdered MSM. I left out the coconut oil this time.
There are lots of places online to buy some. RB gets hers from a site called butters n bars. If you're like me and wary about where and who you buy from online, you can also buy the butter through Amazon or other more well-known companies.
Hello! First time viewer. I have a question; What is this mixture used for? Is it a substitute from actual hair lotion, or used as a deep conditioner, or used for when braiding? I apologize if you have already stated this answer in the video- its just that I am at work so I cannot turn up the volume. Please, and thanks for your time!
hey i have a question i found this local market that sells raw white and yellow shea butter and i wanted to know if you knew wich is better, im planing on using it like u did here...thans and wonderful vid by the way
i dont think there is a difference between white yellow shea butter, as long as its unrefined and pure. ive seen fake yellow shea butter and fake white so just be careful.
I have Nutiva coconut oil from vitamin shoppe (actually amazon has the 54oz jar for about $20) and also the coconut oil from butters-n-bars. I prefer BNB because of the greater coconut scent - that's just my preference.
Rustic, I LOVE this mix! I used to blend these two all the time in the past, but don't know why I stopped! It's also good for body moisturizing after showering!!! Thanks for reminding me about the Shea/Coco mix!
This Product came out great. I've used shea butter and coconut oil before but i never knew that we can melt shea butter down. I did it and its soft and smooth on touch.
(atPeace55) You should google 'unrefined shea butter fair trade' to get the best deals. However I get mine from butters-n-bars dotcom...I get the shea butter from vitaminshoppe
Thank you I actually found a African Food Market and they sold the unrefined shea butter there and african black soap which looked weird I haven't tried it yet not sure how to use. I'm still watching youtubes on the product!
atPeace55, have you tried African black soap (ABS) yet? I love it ... we use it from head to toe (incl as a shampoo). ABS comes in a solid block that looks & crumbles like dry cookie dough. You can slice it into bars or just break pieces off. You can also make liquid soap/shampoo/hand wash w/ it. Just fill a bottle half-full w/ pcs of ABS, add a 4 drops of essential oil & fill w/ H2O. Vegetable glycerin & oil can also be added as well. You can also buy it liquid if you don't want to mix it.
atPeace55, Butters-n-bars (ebay name & site) sells great African black soap. She sells it in it's natural solid form & offers it as a liquid, too. I use it solid & liquid; but, I buy it solid & make my own liquid mixes.
EssentialBalms has wonderful products, too ... check out her site.
Atpeace55, I think Rusticbeauty meat she gets the coconut oil from the vitamin shoppe, online or in person, they have unrefined extra virgin coconut oil
Hi there, I wanted to let you know how I make my whipped shea. I melt it down in the double boiler( much like you did) but I do this in a glass container. Once everything is melted down, I put the mix in the glass bowl, and put it in the freezer for 10 min (this is the quick way). When I take it out, the glass is cold, and some of the mix has lightly started to freeze. Next I whip and add essential oils. If you want it creamy add more coconut oil, if you want it more solid, more shea butter.
AHHH...(lol) I'm so happy cause I just got my shea butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oil in from butters-n-bars. I'm going to go play in it (lol)
Thank you so much for the video. I order my shea butter from Ebay, Butter N Bars, like you said in another video. I mixed only coconut oil to it. Could you share where to buy different scents for the shea butter? Thank you in advance.
I seriously can't believe that people are on here talking crap about your mix blender. It is not that serious people, there is no need for rustic to waste money on a NEW ONE...for what? hi i live vin the houston area and i was wondering could you make me some of your shea butter i would gladly pay you. i just need enough to soften my hair.how much would it be :)
Thanks for posting this video, ususally i whip it at room tempurature(My room is usally reall hot so it softens up nicely). I tried it this way and just added some coconut oil, vitamin e oil and honey and it came out so much better so much soother. I think im going to do it like this from now on.
Doesn't heating the shea butter remove some of its healing and benficial properties? It is possible to whip it without heating it. Saw someone else on here do it in her video and her whipped shea butter appeared to have had the same consistency as yours...just a thought.
(pixigirl999) I think heating it in the microwave may remove some of its healing properties...This is my first time doing it this way...I only wanted to leave it in the hot water for a few minutes to soften...but got distracted....You can defintely mix it without heating it up first.
One more thing I forgot to add natural preservatives to you mix. It's very important if you want your shea butter to have a long shelf life free of mold. You can watch some vids on here about natural preservatives: they include: raw honey, tea tree oil, vitamin e oil, grapefruit seed extract, rosemary/sage oil, etc. Happy Mixing :-)
I made a whipped shea butter last year and used the remainder of my burnt sugar pomade to it. It smelt wonderful, so good my daughter took it with her when she left for college. I was bummed out about that I ordered another jar of it to made some more. I have to hide it when she comes home to visit. *lol*
wow. I've been trying to find a lite healthy hair conditioner in the store, and I have been using shea butter for my ends but this is really cool. I'm going to try creating my own mix too. I have a premixed shea butter conditioner but it's a bit creamy. Thanks (:
Diffrent shea butter wipes can be very fun to make. I usually stick to four ingredients; Shea butter, castor oil, extra virgin olive or coconut oil and vegetable glycerin... Wow! It never even occurred to me to add the Burnt Sugar Pomade.
oooh, i just ran out of coconut oil, but i have the EVOO, veg glycerin and my she butter - i'll be using those ingredients and using rustic's method tomorrow. i've had a pound of shea for a couple of months with "intentions" on whipping it. lazy, that's all i can say. i even just had to break down and buy a 4 oz jar of whipped shea about a month ago. *LOL*
I like to make my own little shea butter mix too (for my skin though, i wear a twa and shea butter is a little too heavy for my fro) I use a food processor or blender though...you dont have to melt anything if you use one of those :)
(mondiea) Yeah I have used the hand mixer before(w/o) melting the shea butter. I wanted to try this method, but I left the shea butter in the hot water too long and it became like that....I still like the results though...it ensured my end products was perfectly smooth.
it says ur page is unavailabile?..noOOOooOooO...i wasJUST about to go and message youuu,:-( lol
and by the way, this looks SOOOO messy!, but then again....sometimes "messy" is good, hehe. Nice video tho

You can watch some vids on here about natural preservatives: they include: raw honey, tea tree oil, vitamin e oil, grapefruit seed extract, rosemary/sage oil, etc. Happy Mixing :-)

Great tutorial. This is similar to my homemade butter mix. I like to add hot 6 oil for scent.

Its easier if you use a kitchenaid and let it blend for about an hour stirring in between every 15-20 minutes or so.

Thanks (:

Great video. I have 3lbs of shea butter so I can't wait to mix up some different scents and make it smooth like that.
