I actually don't have a problem with the mumbling, it feels like part of his improvisation. What I do have a problem with, however, is his un-inventive soloing and his lack of musical spark that makes him a jazz player, not a jazz great. Interesting, talent-filled and fun, but intellectually and spiritually lack luster.
It doesn't seem to be Jarrett's style to deliver a solo or a style of playing that's derived of great virtuosity. His style's controlled, minimal & rhythmic...it's a different approach to jazz piano, which is why he's made a great career out of it
@777bookwurm About the un-inventive soloing: Don't you think it's a jazz discipline to be able to a song very "un-inventive" and still make it sound so amazing?
Of course you might not find the song as amazing as i do. :-D

@rdevin31 no way man. jarrett is far from cheese, he's in a music trance. this you wouldn't understand unless you reach that state of mind while playing music yourself, or you meditate.
@deependful I agree w/ you 100%. Jarrett is bullshit. A good, player. The sensitive genius act is so obnoxious, I call for a boycott of his concerts. (No one will disturb the "Infant terrible)". KJ is a fake and a phony. The Masters played for themselves but had great appreciation for their fans. KJ is IMO & to be polite, a pompous ass. But if his music makes someone feel good, Listen & enjoy. His trio playing (THX to GP&JD superb. Solo, lots of notes. Few important. Note 2 KJ, Fuck U!
@frody8pie Well hello again. You really do seem to be making something of a career out of leaving immature comments on various Keith Jarrett videos. Can I recommend you either turn your attention to Lady Gaga or seek a long course of counselling.
@allcreditdue KJ'a great player.IMO when an artist interacts w/ the audience like he does it's a 2 way street. If U want to pay $ to be insulted & be told that it's a privilege for KJ to play for U, great. I've had the chance to hear the true masters many times. An artist must play 4 himself, but the Giants showed respect for their audience. If J just played I wouldn't make any comments. His act is designed for gullible people likeU. Look @ Umbria 07 again. Who needs counseling? Enjoy the music.
@frody8pie I know what you mean. He's certainly a dousch but I respect his ability on the instrument, and enjoy his music for it's slow epic builds... Almost none of the other jazz piano "greats" had as much control of the instrument as Jarrett does, but that being said I do think that Mehldau could tear him to pieces... Love Jarretts music though. To each his own :)
@SFuNk24 I agree w/ U I like his playing in the trio format. IMO his solo playing is A LOT OF NOTES, but few are memorable. KJ is obviously a great musician. I consider him masterful, not a "Master". As U know there's a big difference. He really, xcept 4 his behavior has never changed music, he hasn't been much of an influence, & he just doesn't have a sound that is a game changer. Evans really changed things. My problem w/J is his sensitive genius act (phoney) & lack of respect 4 the audience.
@nobodady1 Then I'll listen to Corea or Hancock instead. Jarrett has been playing a long time with this weaving, bobbing and grunting crap. You would think he would get as tired of it as those who listen to it. No one else at this level of artistry makes these noises. I play bass and get emotional, but I don't grunt so a mike can pick it up. If he is going to scat sing he should do it musically like McFerrin or Jarreau and have it ADD to the performance. Here its a detraction-distraction.
@videocanone Most pianists sing or mumble. KJ is annoying, but if UR tuned in to his music (trio) U don't notice it much. IMO the rest of his "ACT" is BS. A side show for suckers. I agree w/U. Look @ Miles, Trane, Tony Williams, John Lewis, Evans, to name a few, they barely move, just play. KJ Umbria 07, tells U all U need to know about KJ A pompous ass. IMO he will be a footnote in jazz history.Miles, Trane etc. had a mystique, they just showed up & played. J tries & fails 2 create a mystique.
@frody8pie For sure ! I always thought that KJ did his best playing with Miles anyway, and mumbled the least when he did. I have no problem with scat signing if its musical, and some players of other than wind instruments do that well on occasion. But you are right, most great musicians just play and the movement and other noises are minimal and only the result of normal muscle contractions needed to do the job. KJ looks like he has to take a piss real bad and is in pain holding it back. LOL !!!
Interesting spin on this ole standard ... I like the rhythmic intensity and his alternate harmonic content, but I can do without the grunting and other vocalizations.
Great stuff, I love Jarrett's approach. Watching this video reminded me of the old joke about most club owners thinking that a piano trio was the player, a piano and a bench.
Apart from this incredible Summertime, settling the eternal debate between perfection and freedom, this post is worth checking for the comments it has triggered: On one side, ignorant people expressing themselves as if they had something to say on things they will never undestand. On the other side, mild "music-listeners" who understand that this is about feeling, not about insulting others. I am not sure anyone is entitled to such ignorant critique-like barking just because he bought a PC.
This shit insane! I've come back the last 4 nights and watched this video, and everytime, I do I find myself bopping my head and smiling broadly. I first found out who Jarrett was a couple weeks ago. He was in town for a concert I was thinking of going to even tho I'd never heard of him. Thought it be something cool to do, check someone out live that I'd never heard of before. Anyways I never did go, but I discovered this dude and I've downloaded him on i-tunes checked him out on youtube. GREAT!
Great player but he's making noises that totally ruin the music. And no, making sounds that make you think something is being stuffed to his rectum is not part of the music. I play the piano myself and feel the music without making noises when I play. Sometimes I hum the melody and many musicians do that, but Jarret is just bellowing ugly gibberish.
tune it out - I seem to remember Gould getting similarly carried away with Bach - and he remains one of the best classical pianists ever - this is a stunning interpretation - takes balls to be this radical
@EnigmaticAminoAcid just because you don't make noises when you play the piano doesn't make it any less of an art form when someone else does. jarrett is expressing everything he feels inside, after all, it's his own form of personal expression, and that's essentially what music is. so to say it's not part of the music is very narrow minded; although music is about channeling energy into "organised sound", jarrett has so much musical energy, part of that energy is released as vocal murmurs...
@halo3face Yeah, that must be it. I'm just narrow minded when I prefer just piano in comparison to piano + torturing a cat. No one really likes those voices in the background, everyone just thinks it makes them look more artistic and intelligent if they say it "channels his musical energy" or something other constrained shite.
So you play the piano! Ok, this fully entitles you to making comments on Jarrett's playing. Two questions: When you "hum" melodies, how many people are there in the room? Have you posted some video playing the piano? I suspect (but I am ready to apologise if I am wrong) that you cannot understand what you see. Keith Jarrett is among the most influential Jazz pianists in the world. You may not like his music, but making educated comments requires more than playing and "hum"ing melodies.
@typoque I am not comparing myself to his skill. And I didn't say that I don't like his music, I said I dislike the noises he makes while playing that great music of his. And what is this "educated comment" you talk about, the kind of comment that agrees with your preconception but not others? And no, playing the piano does not entitle me to make comments on Jarret's playing, I am entitled to make those comments whether I play it or not. Are you seriously saying you ENJOY listening that noise??
1. Of course you can make comments even if you don't play the piano. But if playing the piano is irrelevant, why did you mention it in your comment in the first place? (read your comment please).
2. "Educated comments" exist. They are the ones made by experts. Not everyone is an expert, but everyone may comment, of course without any special abilities.
3. It is not about liking the "noise", it is about liking genious, inspired and happy performers.
@typoque 1. I was emphasizing that I understand why he does it, but I still don't like it. 2. You can make an educated comment about particle physics or history but you can't make an educated comment about what sounds good. 3. Change of subject? I do think he's genious but I was merely talking about the listening experience that is (in my opinion) depreciated by his 'noises'. But my opinion is just my opinion and ultimately irrelevant. It annoys me though when some think their opinion is a fact.
@typoque And what gives you the right to assume that because someone doesn't like listening Jarret's yelping he/she doesn't understand something about musicality and its passion? You can't be ignorant in the matters of taste. You're an elitist douche. Beware, if someone would actually give a shit about what you have to say, they might get insulted.
@Eproctophil i disagree. even if you do think that, it's hard to say that this is EASILY the best version....
it's not like what he's doing is all that out of left field, either. i mean he's just playing summertime, and the rhythmic pattern is straight out of mississippi, louisiana ca. 1910...
i'm not saying its not great....i'm saying to call it EASILY the best shows that you haven't listened to enough versions of summertime.
@ethansimon94 bacause it has to be very VERY hard to play before it is the best version......... right ethansimon94? no? then why do you mention its easy to play
@christianitzchakylar no? when did i imply that? i'm just saying that if you'd heard the sidney bechet version, or the coltrane version, or the miles version, you might think differently.
There are some people who let their music infuse every inch of their bodies, and I guess Keith is one of them. It seems odd to look at, but then you find yourself getting into the music that much more. Wonderful pianist.
Well - The theatrics aren't necessarily to my liking, but the talent is absolutely undeniable - - I've played for 35 years, and I wish I could play like this.
As if the looks of a genius has anything to do with his art. As probably only very few of you know, it is quite possible to experience an out-of-the-body-experience while playing music, or the experience that "something/somebody else is playing".
As if Mr. Jarrett stands up on some premeditated purposes, in order to make more of a show out of it...
I couldnt remember his name to look him up, but im 38yrs old now and heard his music when i was 12 , 13, or so. Awesome! thanks to whoever posted his art. I can continue to keep my mind open with Keith Jarrett, Eberhard Weber, Pat Matheny, Spyro Gyro, Yellowjackets, etc...........................................
@r3ck0rd just got your reply, but not certain how it directly goes with my comment...
As I mentioned before, I dig the Live Evil playing...and this cut did not get me going...so..not sure how his well known notion of not liking electronic instruments goes with my comment. I'm going to look for his early trio work...I hear that's pretty fine stuff. yeah, his present attitude is that he doesn't dig the Rhodes sound, etc. But man, nobody played the Rhodes better than he did on Live Evil.
@sclogse1 I don't really listen to Keith Jarrett, all I know that he doesn't like electronic/amplified instruments. His usage of Fender Rhodes and Contempo was because he wanted to work with Miles Davis and Jack DeJohnette (en.wikipedia), and just being professional.
I can't say i'm the most knowledgeable/biggest fan of jazz, but I like this. Very unique and well done. Different can be good. This is an example of that.
I can't believe with all his body gyrations how he plays with such rhythmic and tonal perfection. A lot of people wouldn't be able to recognize genius if it was right in front of them. I once flew three thousand miles just see him play live. It was worth every dime.
To be honest with you, I think I play too many notes, and Jarrett himself is the very King of too-many-notes. Also, I don't like my playing at all. I need to learn how to articulate less and smooth things out. I also need to learn how to deal with the high register. Your spelling doesn't bother me that much. I was just being cantankerous. We need critics like you (keeps us honest)! (Even if the criticism hurts sometimes). I'll video response my too few notes above, just for chillin'.

@EnigmaticAminoAcid just because you don't make noises when you play the piano doesn't make it any less of an art form when someone else does. jarrett is expressing everything he feels inside, after all, it's his own form of personal expression, and that's essentially what music is. so to say it's not part of the music is very narrow minded; although music is about channeling energy into "organised sound", jarrett has so much musical energy, part of that energy is released as vocal murmurs...
halo3face 1 year ago
@halo3face Yeah, that must be it. I'm just narrow minded when I prefer just piano in comparison to piano + torturing a cat. No one really likes those voices in the background, everyone just thinks it makes them look more artistic and intelligent if they say it "channels his musical energy" or something other constrained shite.
EnigmaticAminoAcid 1 year ago
So you play the piano! Ok, this fully entitles you to making comments on Jarrett's playing. Two questions: When you "hum" melodies, how many people are there in the room? Have you posted some video playing the piano? I suspect (but I am ready to apologise if I am wrong) that you cannot understand what you see. Keith Jarrett is among the most influential Jazz pianists in the world. You may not like his music, but making educated comments requires more than playing and "hum"ing melodies.
typoque 11 months ago
@typoque I am not comparing myself to his skill. And I didn't say that I don't like his music, I said I dislike the noises he makes while playing that great music of his. And what is this "educated comment" you talk about, the kind of comment that agrees with your preconception but not others? And no, playing the piano does not entitle me to make comments on Jarret's playing, I am entitled to make those comments whether I play it or not. Are you seriously saying you ENJOY listening that noise??
EnigmaticAminoAcid 11 months ago
In response to your ... reply:
3. It is not about liking the "noise", it is about liking genious, inspired and happy performers.
typoque 11 months ago
EnigmaticAminoAcid 11 months ago
@typoque And what gives you the right to assume that because someone doesn't like listening Jarret's yelping he/she doesn't understand something about musicality and its passion? You can't be ignorant in the matters of taste. You're an elitist douche. Beware, if someone would actually give a shit about what you have to say, they might get insulted.

Eproctophil 1 year ago

Ignorants, close your eyes and be quiet.

The baddest Keith Jarrett is with Miles Davis...on the Live Evil album. Listen to What I Say on that album....man...that's the baddest ever.
This Jarrett work here does not inspire me at all.
sclogse1 1 year ago
@sclogse1 err, because Keith Jarrett doesn't like electronic instruments?
r3ck0rd 1 year ago
@r3ck0rd just got your reply, but not certain how it directly goes with my comment...
As I mentioned before, I dig the Live Evil playing...and this cut did not get me going...so..not sure how his well known notion of not liking electronic instruments goes with my comment. I'm going to look for his early trio work...I hear that's pretty fine stuff. yeah, his present attitude is that he doesn't dig the Rhodes sound, etc. But man, nobody played the Rhodes better than he did on Live Evil.
sclogse1 1 year ago
@sclogse1 I don't really listen to Keith Jarrett, all I know that he doesn't like electronic/amplified instruments. His usage of Fender Rhodes and Contempo was because he wanted to work with Miles Davis and Jack DeJohnette (en.wikipedia), and just being professional.
r3ck0rd 1 year ago
I´m hearing this everyday. His way of playing it is such an inspiration for everyone who is playing the piano.

I can't believe with all his body gyrations how he plays with such rhythmic and tonal perfection. A lot of people wouldn't be able to recognize genius if it was right in front of them. I once flew three thousand miles just see him play live. It was worth every dime.
kevin120857 1 year ago 3
@kevin120857 Thats exactly what helps him with his rhythmns and tone.
He's physically in his own groove and transferring that onto piano. It helps to get some emotion out and into the music.

Hey "jazzflutist"! Ever hear of "notes"? Play more f*-ing notes and maybe you'll have a carrer!
smarterthananyone 1 year ago
I like his classical playing. I doubt whether you'll have a career with spelling like that!
I'll do more notes when you learn how to spell.
jazzflutist 1 year ago
I can use spell check to fix my spelling. What will you use to fix your inability to come up with more notes?
smarterthananyone 1 year ago
To be honest with you, I think I play too many notes, and Jarrett himself is the very King of too-many-notes. Also, I don't like my playing at all. I need to learn how to articulate less and smooth things out. I also need to learn how to deal with the high register. Your spelling doesn't bother me that much. I was just being cantankerous. We need critics like you (keeps us honest)! (Even if the criticism hurts sometimes). I'll video response my too few notes above, just for chillin'.
jazzflutist 1 year ago
Have you ever seen the movie "Amadeus"? Watch it. You'll soon have your "too many notes" analogy thrown back in your face.
