I still buy the Eye but more from habit than anything else. The cartoons are still good. It lost a lot when Hislop took over, some say appointing him was Cooke's idea of a joke, he did love to upset apple carts, and making Hislop editor cost the Eye the services of Auberon Waugh, quite possibly the most brilliant and funny writer they had. A real satirist, not a sarcasm seller.
Im not sure the Eye is the force it was. This may be down to a lack of good information from reliable sources but it seems to have descended into smirky schoolboy humour. Perhaps that was just the years that Labour was in power. I see that Craig Brown has bought into the Daily Mail, and has dumbed down his writing for that purpose by the looks of things. Sad.
"The whole of my working life has been spent laughing at the Tories." Ian Hislop.
The whole of my working life I've spent working. Either I am or he is a scrawny, over-indulged, underwhelming, unfunny, overrated, parasitical, annoyingly smug media wanker.
@ludocrat private eye is the perfect example of free speech and journalism. They do not compromise with bribes or threats and cannot, will not ever back down despite law suits from daily heil and fugger
@Lemster19 i used to have time for Paul Foot until he championed the cause of and tried to clear the name of James Hanratty when he was guilty as sin.

The only paper/magazine in England worth reading. Long may it reign, independantly.

A dumb fan. How touching.
Hislop = an overrated lightweight (not by his own estimation, natch).
Private Eye = once a great institution, long ago. Now, a bad joke. The bad joke and the Hislop eras coincide, shockingly.
Now fuck off, you toad.

@ludocrat Naa you are just a sad pissy loser. Reading the daily mail and buying into all the piers morgan bullshit. Hes a cunt and so are you

Why hasn't there been a recent documentary on Private Eye, I'm sure it would be fascinating to see how the Magazine's run now?
