Intro gave me goosebumps. i <3 Wicked. I like social commentaries, so I adored the book and I'm a Broadway freak so I'm in love with the musical. Overall, Oz-sessed.
I love Wicked! Probably the best show I have seen so far!
I did it the other way around. I read the book after we found out we were going to the show and then I saw it. I agree that the musical was better, but it was a lot eaiser to get through the book before I saw how EPIC Wicked was!
It's hard to compare the book and musical because they're so different. I think I prefer the musical simply because A) it's a musical, B) I prefer the happy (ish) ending, and C) I just sort of prefer the way the story is told in the musical. The book is good but very... Depressing.
I am not a fan of musicals at all, not sure why, but a friend begged me to see wicked with him AND I LOVED IT! So so amazing I'm excited to see what the others come up with for this theme :)
P.S. 10 weeks congrats and keep it up I've watched you guys for every one of them :)!
i know what you mean about hardgoing. I read GM's take on Cinderella (Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister) which to me seemed pretty groundbreaking in terms of content, but it took so long for me to get into it, because the language was so difficult. It's fine once you adjust, although i have been putting off reading "mirror mirror" (his take on snow white) for a while, because i know the language is challenging. Ok, that is all i have to say
did you go watch it while it was in melbourne? i haven't seen it in sydney yet or anywhere in australia but i saw the original production at broadway in 2003, i think i was 11-12? at the george gershwin theatre i think. i actually hate most musicals except those by gilbert and sullivan and stephen sondheim, though those are more operas but it was alright, thoug not exactly the best time in manhatten for what was then i think my second time
You did the whole review without saying "revisionism" or "revisionist" - for that, I must respect you.
I don't think the book or musical are better/worse than each other, they're just different. Now that you've read the book, you'll agree there's a lot the musical had to leave out for...simplicity and drama (?).
I went to see it on Broadway in New York with the original cast. It was amazing.

I love Idina Menzel's voice so very very much. I really hope they somehow get her for Glee, it would be too much fun.

I agree. The musical was beyond fantastic.
The book was good...i guess. It was very hard to follow and made me feel less smart for not understanding it completely. :(
