Yes, there's a lot of misinformation around!
A few pieces of useful info: these T-shirts say "One China" in Chinese. The Dalai Lama says he wants, not independence and separation, but cultural autonomy under the Chinese constitution and sovereignty. He has supported the Olympics, and criticised the violence in Tibet. And he's on record as being glad that theocracy is over.
There's an interesting interview with him by a patriotic Chinese student called Kong Lingxi (try Google...)
